For someone like me, a map hacker and not a modder, this is the kind of thing I need. It may be obvious to a modder but for someone that knows just enough to open GE and plop down an object from another map this is something to consider that I never really thought of. I guess I just assumed that clipping distance was something that was set in game options that was universally applied.
Yeah, I see a tension here between realism vs performance. As a computer player I lean towards the realism side and really like maps with higher clipping distances. But I can see where it is a major performance hit. Sorry for the multiple comments, this one just got me excited. Like when a little, simple piece of knowledge fills a big hole.
Ah ha!!! On several maps I had noticed that at distance...lod1 distance...equipment barns would lose their doors. It would look like the door is open and the equipment would be visible. Nice when you get the answers to these little mysteries.
On some maps it's a little too obvious and the clipping distance values could stand to get pushed back a little further. If you can still see equipment in the shed, it may be a little too close.
