  • In honor of Oklahoma going to the College Football Playoff and Barry Switzer winning the NCFAA Contributions award, here's an interview I did with Coach in Spring Break of 2013. It should be noted that the day before, Steve Davis, Switzer's first quarterback as head coach, died in a plane crash. I was "the only media he was seeing that day."

In the past I was often critical of Barry Switzer. But one evening I saw him on an airplane flying into Oklahoma City from Dallas. As he walked down the aisle he smiled at me and patted me on the shoulder for no apparent reason as he passed by and I witnessed firsthand the power he had to make someone feel special by a small and random act of kindness. That experience made an impression on me. Now I try to think more carefully before I speak unflatteringly about someone . . . especially if it’s a person I’ve never met.

He without a doubt made me feel special as a 7th grader interviewing him for a paper about OU Football. I was very lucky to get that opportunity, and it all came about from a simple email.

I imagine that many folks, esp. with people from the coasts, have had the same experience. A great guy.

Can’t believe a movie hasn’t been made about his life.

People love to point out the trouble that some of his players got into, but they hardly ever mention the good ones that came out of his program.

Very good interview for a young kid at the time, and Coach Switzer is a very gracious man, very human.. and this is one of several interviews I watched of him recently and I have a lot of respect for the man I never knew much about and the media has portrayed him differently over the decades. .and he was a very good recruiter in his day..a modest man. He was patient with the vacuum cleaner running in the background lol

Barry Switzer is a 100% CLASS person, many would have refused. He knew what would happen behind him and during the interview. It was a moment to SHARE with his FRIEND, Will Gibson, It wasn't to do a "promotion" etc. Just as 2 MEN talking./

Will Gibson, the man, the dream, *BETTER* than Dean Blevins. It's a joke people, relax. Will, You are the BEST (OK, number 2 to Howard Cosell) in My book, regardless. Will.......... I remember talking to my Dad, who was born in 1927, You got closer to Coach Switzer than I got "close" to my Dad. You're awesome my Brother, Will, Love you same as I love Coach Switzer.

Quite a show for an interview, woman & child walking behind them, ringing cell phone that Barry answers, something noisy as hell outside. Entertaining!

Bucky Teel haha yeah. I thought he might ask the cleaning lady to turn the vacuum off. I was fairly flattered how he handled the phone call.

I think he was probably the best choice to coach Dallas after Johnson. Consider he played with Johnson, coached with him, competed against him, he knew how Johnson built the team.

Only a great guy says nothing about the vacuuming. Just goes with it.

Maybe the most honest interview I've ever heard Switzer give. Obviously he wasn't "on" without multiple network-TV cameras pointed at him, and he wasn't trying to be funny or flamboyant. Never heard him speak of his Army background.
