I went with scoundrel. But remember, its mostly for the first 15 minutes of the game, after you start leveling up, you can add whatever skills you prefer. Definitely get boost pack asap!
Your starting background does open up a few dialog options too. I won’t say it’s game changing, but it makes some conversations easier.

I was listening to yalls review and I went with Long Hauler because of the weight training skill and the flying skills. Plus, it just makes my guy sound like he came from a simple, blue collar life lol

Ronin just sounds cool pair it with the wanted trait and you really feel like you were an assassin who is trying to move on

Because then you'd pick Stealth, Security and Boostpack training. Stealth to have the stealth meter returned to you because BGS decided that core feature needed a skill point, being able to use jetpacks which again shoukd just be a feature because you lived and grew up in a world where they were more common than having a pack without it and being able to open Advanced locks at the start lets you open more locks and by level 4 you should be able to pick master locks doing this.
Cyber Runner is my go-to when paired with introvert. Not super good in the early-early game, but as soon as you can get a silenced XM2311 and a good set of light armor, that's it, game won.
I paired it with neon street and it’s perfect; the unique dialogue choices and playstyle weave together eloquently 🎉

Definitely bounty hunter, get piloting, jump packing, and targeting. Obviously some cool dialog but mainly i enjoy because if you wanna go all out with the space combat and build some cool stuff i feel it the route.
Homestead is the way to go, these skills are great in any build

‘File not found’ just goes too well with my character having the alien dna, wanted and the dream house perks. Plus those 3 you get to start are useful always
Fits well, sort of an 'escaped experiment from a scientific blacksite' vibe. Wanted and Dream House are a nice pairing in general. You could hoard tons of Contraband there if you wanted.
Honestly it really doesn’t matter unless you pick a background with skills you have no intention of upgrading, I went with diplomat and am very pleased
I did diplomat
just like morrowind. choose the least used skills as your major & minor to min-max your character.
Diplomat gives you extra dialogue options, Persuasion for a higher chance of succeeding on early persuasion checks, Commerce for extra credits when selling off early-game useless junk, & Wellness to give you a little extra health early on.
Backgrounds don't really matter. It's just starting perks. Once you hit level 3, ypu can pick whatever 3 skills you need. Backgrounds do have special dialogue options. I'd pick a background based on that instead of perks.
Nah, backgrounds come up occasionally. I've had NPCs mention mine to me, and now and then I get dialogue options specific to my background. It's not all the time, but it does come around.

@@adamrodger5351 that's literally what I said. The perks are useless, except for adoring fan and the house one (as you cant pick those perks after starting). The dialogue options and NPC mentions are more important to the gameplay. There's no point in picking a background that gives sneak, if that's all you care about, because when you hit level 2 you can just select sneak. You can level up to 5-7 in like 10 minutes which completely negates the starting class perk selection.

I chose the Cyber Runner or whichever one the stealth is. I just love stealth aspects in games and it is currently making my play through even more interesting
Industrialist was my choice, I like how because I chose it, my character automatically is adept in handling herself in the business world. It’s incredibly useful on Neon
My character is a 61 year old washed up Bounty Hunter. Ive got a whole Charlie's Angels thing going on, with a crew of 3 badass chick.
That is the most unique idea iv heard for a build and sounds sick man bet that'll be a blast to play

Cyber hacker I enjoy and what I have learned is to go straight into piloting and anything ship related after bringing lockpicking skill to master
Picked Gangster. Was going for a flat out evil character and had a blast. While not the most practical in terms of skill IE Boxing. Because of theft, boxing, and Gangster itself, I got tons of unique dialogue options, that made the experience even better where my dialogue always felt a bit more sinister than it needed to be. Plus, shotgun certification is self-explanatory.
Shotguns also have a distinction of being one of the few weapons where going automatic keeps the same damage per shot as semi-auto. Pair that with all the skill books that boost weapon magazine size for Allied Armaments weapons and their top of the line shotgun becomes a room shredder.
I went with Ronan, liked the whole anti hero feel to the background haha
I went with File Not Found and Wanted, thought it would be a fun and mysterious combo
I’ll either go with bounty hunter soldier what most likely scoundrel since I’m going for that pirate/smuggler play through
Chose file not found and it’s been a fun playthrough. Using a combination of tactics and specking into ships early has been amazing
Ronin is my personal favorite.
Having stealth with a focus on melee weapons is fun, alongside having a skill in scaveging to make finding supplies much easier.
I'm very happy persuasion actually has a lot of use cases in this game
Combat medic has help me a lot especially with dialogue options and plus who does want a boost for health in the beginning
Xenogenologist makes you a beast with the starting mining laser as the laser and stamina perk lets you run up and instantly melt pirates

Picked Beast Hunter for my background. Gotta say, it's made the probationary mission for the UC Vanguard very fun with it's dialogue options and fits the theme of that quest line lol
Don't forget to talk to the guy in the restaurant attached to the Pioneer Tower(that's the one where Kid Stuff players will find their parents). He'll send you after a critter that was meant to eat and crap out coffee beans for a 'gourmet experience'.
Yeah space scoundrel has worked out pretty well for me so far and i can already fly class b ships (level 14)
Enjoying cyber runner for the security skill and I put skill points into persuasion aswell ,really helps get great loot and persuade people on otherwise difficult quests, I'd say diplomats a strong start to go with to, great skills and dialogue to help you survive the first few quests and build yourself
I went with file not found and the hunted trait and am basically roleplayong a criminal who faked their own death to start over but is having issues leaving old habits in the past. When something is easy to steal or pretty valuable they’ll swipe it but still tries to do good overall. Super fun. Been loving Starfield. Just wish for more enemy variety really.
Bouncer. I'm punching my way across the universe and the game's AI tells enemies to melee me back, which they're not built for.
Although their friends who are still shooting guns at me are doing numbers. 😅

I went with a Gangster that was wanted all the time. It gives me a great RPG experience and I feel like a true Space Outlaw sometimes. It's amazing

I just went with what would be closest to me as a person and how I would see meself in starfield. Remember, go with what you find interesting rather than what others say is the best

I picked industialist before any guide on traits were made. Honestly best choice, i have gotten so many options in persuasion to use my indrualist answers. I have had like 20 this far where it made my quest become easy.
Best thing to go for adoring fan and solider. Those two unlock unique dialog and a unique follower with some pretty good perks.
Iv loved bounty hunter bc you can take one of the enemy ships when you first leave vectera with vasco, allowing you to have some extra early creddits if you sell ig or a good starting ship, iv gotten ships with high level parts you cant get without starship design
Diplomat is my go to, I feel slick when I can make a deal with persuasion
Cyberrunner first playthru went straight to neon for the r tech questline finished then did the crimson fleet questline
Bounty Hunter I just like the starting skills that seemed prevalent and built my character from there.
Bounty Hunter: you start with Piloting, Targeting, and Boost Pack. Make Security your first new ability to have and you can have that at level two before you're done with the first mission, and most of the way to level 2 and Piloting and Targeting. After that, the universe is your oyster.
I did bounty hunter and don’t regret it at all, makes early game very easy especially if you want to tackle the crimson fleet story early on
I went first with File not Found but I'm in the process of playing every characters start
For the most part, it is best to just choose what background sounds fun to you. It'll come up in dialog and sometimes present different options for dealing with situations. The only exception might be if you have a set of skills you'll never touch. E.g. geology for those that don't want to run around with a Cutter zapping rocks every 100 meters.
I went Cyberneticist. Great option because it grants the medicine and security perks, but also lasers. Since the starting equipment, the cutter, is a laser you can start off early with a strong, infinite ammo option for combat
I chose gangster and it gives you special dialog when talking to Crimson fleet or other pirates that allow you to intimate them and get to skip persuading, surprisingly it comes in handy quite often having a crimal background
Professor is really good for crafting and bounty hunter allows you to use boost and maneuvering thrusters right off the bat
I love the scoundrel. It also fits my Starfinder (tabletop RPG) character.
I went professer helps with material and reduces the % for crafting and also comes with navigation
I went with a soldier with wanted, well known hero and introvert kinda making him this secluded war vet that kinda is getting yoinked outa retirement for some weird ass space quest and I love it lol
Industrialist 💯 Also get more dialogue options for corpo/industrial areas and missions.
I like Diplomat. Managed to raise commerce to max level before LVL 6, and make tons of money.
Went with ronin with the Neon Rat trait. Roleplaying her as a former blade for hire who got caught up in the colony war and decided to leave it all behind. Nows she sells her blade to highest bidder so starts doing the Ryujin quests but quits them to become a Crimson Raider and finally let's her heart of gold win out and invests heavily in the Freestar Collective wanting to build something good in the end.
Neon Street Rat was pretty good to avoid tedious dialogue on Neon, there were so many activity quests lol
I chose bounty hunter because I'm a huge metroid fan and want to play like Samus, this plus wanted have been a ton of fun with space dogfights
I like the bounty hunter one because I like the idea of creating my own bebop. A larger space vessel that can haul around smaller vesssels that can detach for quick dog fights when necessary. I really hope that's possible...
I went with Ronin. And I actually had two reasons for this.
The first reason is, that in boarding-combat, a melee weapon is actually the most sensible weapon to use. Why? Because with every other weapon, ballistic or laser, you'd risk damaging the hull of the ship from within.
A blade offers much more control over where you'll strike.
At the same time, the combat area is a confined and small space, so range or more getting in range, is not that much of a problem.
And secondly, it something that you wouldn't expect as Spacer, pirate or marine.
And, funny enough, the security officers in New Atlantis even call you out on your file saying "Ronin" and straight up ask you whether you are aware that guns have been invented.
Went with Bounty Hunter / but also did ‘Wanted’ as one of my traits too. I enjoy the premise of hunting down other people and bringing them in but also being hunted myself from another organization for being ‘Too good at what I do’

Bounty Hunter gives you Piloting, Boost Pack Training, and Targeting Control systems which is essential for space combat and Piloting means you can access the best ships in the game faster as well as Boost Pack Training being essential for all characters. Cyber Runner has Stealth, Security, and Theft and without Stealth or Theft you’re practically locked out of those aspects of the game alongside the already mentioned benefits of Security.
I've been loving all the space pirating with my shotgun specialist and boxing Gangster.
I went with Bounty Hunter. It really sets you up for ship combat, which is much-needed since ship combat is more punishing than ground combat. Persuasion isn't very necessary since I've made most of my Persuasion checks without the skill.
Realistically the starting skills don't end up mattering much, they mostly just provide unique dialogue options, so choose for what sounds fun, not for rounded skills
Yeah i chose bouncer cuz i was goin crackhead melee build early game is rough but when u unlock stims boy its over for them pirates or settlers i dont judge

Bounty hunter is what I went with it seemed like the best option plus I really wanted to be a space bounty hunter in this game so I was super excited to see that as a “class option”

But no matter what, piloting, persuasion, and boost ps k training are essential.
my first character I picked Industrialist. then my second character I picked FILE NOT FOUND. Then I took a break mad my newest character I picked Explorer. If space scoundrel had ballistics instead of pistols I would prolly pick that as well but I hate to be locked into one type of weapon when ballistics go for all them types. my explored in going for lasers and ballistics.
Diplomat is a lot of fun for me, since the starting perks are practically negligible. I get to play as space-Henry Kissinger with slightly less war crimes.
I ended up picking industrialist, tons of quest Ws In too.
Cyberneticist is actually really good Laser Security and Medicine. Medicine is universally helpful especially on very hard, Security is good and Laser covers Rifles Pistols and heavy weapons (arc welder is considered a laser for the skill) Also has a little push into wanted because Lin implies that "anyway this over qualified becoming miner is trying to hide" so roleplaying wise it kinda gives an interesting story that you are clearly to good to be a miner but are on the run for something.
Diplomat is a solid background too. Commerce and talking your way out of trouble are always helpful in Bethesda titles.

I did bounty hunter due to how you can use the background check in some events or conversations as it's something i liked since i makes me feel like i am meant to hunt people down

Neon city rat allowed me to skip a bunch of exposition in neon city while doing the ryujin questline.
I basically said that my guys lore is that he was a diplomat in the colony wars but now hes doing odd jobs for money after the diplomat jobs died out.
Its funny cause Ive gotten through half the fricking game with just persuasion
Bounty hunter is what i started with and iv been in many situations where it actually helped
Bounty Hunter all day, booster pack training, more damage with missile systems, and better space flight. You can get persuasion and weapon perks within the first ten minutes
