It seems clear that most of us like things dark ( so much for love for Barton Fink LOL) but I also look back now and feel it was not a great year for films. Still some I recall with warth and a smile ( Life is Sweet) and I feel really good when I see posts mention films like Raise The Red Latern, Riff Raff, Rambling Rose . As best as I can recall I think the films that blew me away that year were Raise the Red Lantern, Life is Sweet, Riff Raff, Heart of Darkness, and Barton Fink . It is amazzing to the think that Yimou, Mike Leigh, Coens, and Ken Loach went to to direct a number of films that were even better those films. I may be wrong but I suspect when it comes to the Asian films back then Gene and Rodger were operating a year behind because of release dates as I commented on the 1990 that I was suprised they had not cited Joudou so as I move over to the 1992 clip I am anticipating seeing them mention Raise the Red Lantern.

The Rapture was , for me, an exercise in cognitive reasoning. I was quite surprised that practically everyone involved in the production of the film were of Jewish extraction. To handle this film with such a broad-minded viewpoint, made this a surprisingly effective film. The subject matter, performances, and a certain visual style, make the premise very believable. At points in all of our lives, we ponder the existence of a higher power and our meaning, if any, in this world. The fact that some taking religion to the point of fanatical insanity, is quite frightening.

There's a handful of good films, but a pretty weak year overall. Like many have said, Silence of the Lambs not being included on either list is a travesty. That is my biggest gripe about these guys is there hatred for horror movies.
No T2. No Backdraft. No Silence of the Lambs, but we get a stinker like Grand Canyon on both of their lists, and then Siskel inexplicably listing Hearts of Darkness at Number 1. Ugh.
I just want to watch film commentary, I don't find old commercials to pique some nostalgia for what things big business was trying to hawk me at the time.
These guys started on PBS then abandoned it, I suppose for a better deal. PBS had a homegrown hit and then left in the lurch for more money in syndication. Never thought well of them after that!
If you watch enough of these videos, you will notice that Gene misses badly far more often that Roger. Another good example here as he says he doesn't like a film that has gone down as a classic by many.
No silence of the lambs, no terminator 2, no naked gun or hot shots, no cape fear, no city slickers, no point break. No Robin Hood. They like movies that nobody hears of and sees. I still never heard of some these so called top 10 films. Most look so boring. Why were these guys popular??? They clearly hated horror and action films. They sucked as critics 🤣🤣

John Singleton and Boyz n The Hood is really great. Gene hit it with the writing. Lauwrence Fishburne at his best. But, why didn't Singleton make another film as good? Kinda like Spike Lee, his best work was only at the beginning, when he was nobody.
1:00 ..... they said they never went by any script. Didn't feel comfortable doing that. Would have preferred to improvise along the way.
So many of these films have been forgotten, The Silence of the Lambs and T2 have never been forgotten and never will so long as the movies live.
Two mediocre films are going to live forever? Yeah right.
@@Brian-qn7fn You've done nothing to refute the post you commented on. Inarguably, both T2 and Silence of the Lambs have had a greater impact on movies and the pop cultural landscape than movies like Grand Canyon or The Man in the Moon. More than happy to entertain an argument here, but the argument goes beyond what you think of T2 or Silence.
23:46 - A colorized film advertised on Siskel & Ebert? If only they knew!

Hearts of Darkness
The Rapture
Doc Hollywood ? My Girl ?
Wow
The Rapture was , for me, an exercise in cognitive reasoning. I was quite surprised that practically everyone involved in the production of the film were of Jewish extraction. To handle this film with such a broad-minded viewpoint, made this a surprisingly effective film. The subject matter, performances, and a certain visual style, make the premise very believable. At points in all of our lives, we ponder the existence of a higher power and our meaning, if any, in this world. The fact that some taking religion to the point of fanatical insanity, is quite frightening.
@@kdohertygizbur I agree. Those would land, not in my book, of being a personal favorite. Those films and a good chunk of the others, would NOT appear on my "best of" list.
@@steveprice2718 👍
I love Grand Canyon, too. A movie that's misunderstood by the masses and now sadly forgotten. One of the great "Sunday Afternoon Flicks"
The ads are probably one of the most interesting things in this vid
How was T2 not on this list?
I always thought that Roger Ebert was the better film critic. I think that when he watched a movie he was better at relaxing and enjoying a movie and giving it a chance. Gene Siskel often would nit pick a film apart.
T2 and Silence of the Lambs… what else can be said…still a milestone in 2023!
Terminator 2 is mediocre at best.
Unreal that "The Silence of the Lambs" didn't make either of their top 10 ten lists. Not only is it one of the best films of that year but one of the best of that decade
JFK being number one and Silence of the Lambs not even making the list is a joke.
And "Cape Fear."
@@FuriousFredo JFK is a classic. Historical nonsense, but an all girl film.

Wow no love for The Silence of the Lambs
Is that Lizzy 'bugger me gently' Birdsworth in the thumbnail??
I loved grand canyon 1st time I seen it. Watch it every year... and it inspired me to go in 2018 to sit on the rocks.
Boyz in the Hood won nominations for Best Director and Screenplay but no Best Picture
That's a blot since they nominated Prince of Tides...a good movie...but no way more deserving than Boyz
Boyz n the hood is overrated.. prince of tides is a great movie imo.. menace 2 society was so much better than boyz.. boyz n hood looks like a corny movie in comparison

My Top 10 from 1991 (haven't seen Grand Canyon):
Barton Fink
Beauty and the Beast
Boyz n the Hood
Cape Fear
City Slickers

Hearts of Darkness
JFK
The Silence of the Lambs
Terminator 2: Judgment Day
Top not quite 10 - bad year.
Silence of the Lambs
Point Break
Terminator II
Thelma and Louise
The Man in the Moon
JFK - didn't believe it but good drama
Grand Canyon - started out good and then got hooky and sentimental and stupid. Don't base a movie on a Phil Collins song
Boyz in the Hood - Average film, I knew it would be the last praised film by Singleton.
OK i haven't seen the rest but I usually know what I like and don't like from a preview. I didn't like Apocalypse Now so it goes ... .
I think SIskel has a thing for Jane Birkin movies in 91
I am worse because not only did I have a thing for her but also like her daughter LOL. I think I was in Junior High when the song "J'taime" was release . I got to say her daughter is a good actress and has a nice voice ( she has sung with Beck)

It's amazing neither Roger or Gene have Terminator 2 or Point Break on their list.
I know. Most of those movies they've listed I have either not seen or even heard of.
@@agentprime2179 I think this is partially the point of these shows, to bring awareness to lesser seen good movies, instead of propping up the number 1 movie of the year again
T2 was a mainstream money maker. Both of them did like it. Only Roger really liked Point Break, although Gene didn't hate it, he just thought it was overstuffed. To make their Top 10 of the entire year was a high bar.
Point Break ? Seriously
Terminator 2 is a good movie but not nearly as effective as the first movie and not worthy of a top ten spot.
Terminator 2
The Silence of the Lambs
Beauty and the Beast
Thelma and Louise
City Slickers
The Fisher King
Boyz in the Hood
JFK

Star Trek: The Undiscovered Country

Surprised that neither of them had the _actual_ best films of 1991 on their lists.
Here was my top five: 1. Silence of the Lambs 2. Beauty and the Beast 3. Bugsy 4. Terminator 2 Judgement Day 5. JFK
Guys gotta understand something about Siskel and Ebert. They think of films like Speedrunners think of games and literally go after the ones that make them feel great. These guys have seen thousands upon thousands of films. Think twice about misjudging their opinion. If you had told them your favorite film list, they'd vomit.
I'd go w Roger: JFK slightly better than B&B
Grand Canyon was excellent.

You did a lot of work for a joke post.
I remember seeing Grand Canyon in the theater and thinking it was laughably bad. I am amazed they both thought it was top 10.
Never even heard of that movie
No Addams Family? No Terminator 2? LAME!
I've never seen so many people walk out before a movie was over than at Grand Canyon. I didn't like it either.
My Favorite and Best Flim of the Year 1991 on my opinion
1. T2 Judgement Day
2. Paradise
3. My Girl
4. Beauty and the Beast
5. Curly Sue
6. The Addams Family
7. An American Tail 2 Fievel Goes West
8. Return of The Blue Lagoon
You have to be kidding.
Too bad u "had" to include ads
Robinhood prince of thieves
They really don't like each other.
There's a handful of good films, but a pretty weak year overall. Like many have said, Silence of the Lambs not being included on either list is a travesty. That is my biggest gripe about these guys is there hatred for horror movies.
I also like Hearts of Darkness better than Apocalypse Now
No T2. No Backdraft. No Silence of the Lambs, but we get a stinker like Grand Canyon on both of their lists, and then Siskel inexplicably listing Hearts of Darkness at Number 1. Ugh.
Come on, backdraft is awful
Lol
I just want to watch film commentary, I don't find old commercials to pique some nostalgia for what things big business was trying to hawk me at the time.
Siskel's pronunciation of his number 4 choice is.....not so good
These guys started on PBS then abandoned it, I suppose for a better deal. PBS had a homegrown hit and then left in the lurch for more money in syndication. Never thought well of them after that!
Thelma and Louise?
Sometimes theae guys are just playing with us.
what...no Silence of the Lambs...these guys need a life...lol
If you watch enough of these videos, you will notice that Gene misses badly far more often that Roger. Another good example here as he says he doesn't like a film that has gone down as a classic by many.
JFK? Really?
Thelma & Louise was such a dumb movie.
I always hated roger for som reason
