Thanks for the video and its great to see a short clear review of content, especially kick-starters which can be a minefield. However on this occasion there are some key elements that you may have missed and may not have been available to you on recording. First of all the head designer for this game is 'Andy Chambers' who is probably the top skirmish game designer alive having been at the top of the Skirmish game tree since the late 80s early 90s till now. Secondly Free League gave over an hour breakdown live of the Kickstarter at the beginning of November, stating that they have more modules and add on's to bring post release, including new minis and STL files for the game, including new factions to add. Finally the game is a streamlined Zero engine game play with D6 dice pools which is not a standard skirmish rule set, and which enables individuals to bring TTRP characters into a skirmish setting. Something that is rarely seen and much rarely seen done well. It is great to have an overview and the quality safety net you offer for Kick starters, however this particular one may require a little more inquiry.
Hey there! Funnily enough the Fria League stream happened an hour or two after this video went out but I'm going to pin your comment so people can see a good summary of post launch content. When it comes to Andy, it seems like FL are targeting this towards existing MYZ players or people who are new to wargaming. With that in mind Andy would (I would heavily assume) not be known to people who don't have a prior knowledge of skirmish games/ miniature games which is the main reason he wasn't mentioned :)
That's not a dumb reason at all, in fact it's a great reason to back it. Genuinely it's a really good price and I may still talk myself round to backing it too before the campaign ends. If you enjoyed Road to Eden I think you'll find this to be a lot of fun and a great introduction to skirmish games :)
Sundropped: They said they were primed and washed. We won't know for sure until they're in our hands, but so far it looks like you should be able to paint right over them. It might not work with contrast or speedpaint, but regular paints for sure. GIving backers (and non-backers) the Alpha rules to print and play: That's a huge plus because you can try before you buy. Andy Chambers designing the game is also a huge plus. Random activations reminds me of Bolt Action, and it's a pretty popular game.
Yeah even with sundrop miniatures should still take paint quite well. I was chatting to the folks at Rebellion at UK Games Expo about this as they released sundropped mini's for Sniper Elite but a member of the team had painted them up and had a good experience with it. Like you say though it'll be clearer when it's in folks hands as to whether they need to strip the sundrop first and then paint or paint as is.
@@shouldyoubackit Re-rolling your gear dice risks damaging your gear for the benefit of potentially more successes. Re-rolling your base dice gives you potentially more successes and more M-points to power your mutation/module. This is unique because the players need to balance three factors regarding re-rolls: extra successes, damage to gear, M-points.
Oh for sure, and it'll be great for new skirmish gamers as I said in the video. If you're not that, and you're looking for something new and fresh this may just not be it. Or at least right now, FL haven't communicated how much post-release support this will get as far as I'm aware.
It may be worth noting that a sample gameplay video just came out today, with folks from Free League playing three rounds of the game if folks wanted to get a feel for how it plays. While it does feel pretty standard, this could also be a good game for folks who either aren't as into the deeper tactical wargames or want a solid entry point before jumping into something like Blood Rage or committing to something really large like Warhammer.
I play mini games every other week. and I just tried this the other night, and it is just so much fun! did you read through the cards? You can have abilities that destroy terrain. You can risk your gear for rerolls. If you don't have gear, you are at a dice disadvantage, but can reroll without risk. you drop objectives from 5 feet up... because Random and easy. events keep the game interesting. yes, this game is super random. if you embrace that, it is going to be a lot of fun.
There was definitely a game play video released during the campaign. I don't think it was part of the original campaign content but it did release before the end of the campaign.
Yeah unfortunately it released a few days after I had put my video out so I wasn't able to take it into account but it was great to see them put a video out showcasing how the game plays
There are 3 source books for the RPG so its possible we get new models in the future. I like the setting and its reasonably priced so it was an autoback for me.
Great vid dear fellow...i was looking forward to the KS... but boy they really not selling it well at all... 2 sides with 5 figures only, yes you have mutant power upgrades... but 5 choices !. and nothing on the rulebook, how many pages, does it have rules to design your own hero, what about campaign play...if we look at fallout wasteland warfare they seem to cover all the bases with that... even that "SD" by warlord games had a few figures only, the rulebook let you go anyway, anytime be a alien, human or robot even drive hover bikes or ride animals... a full world to explore. and may i say great rules for "star wars" bounty hunting games wink wink.
I think the price point perfectly suits what you get to be honest, the fact there aren’t tons of minis would make me hope what they do have is really tight balancing-wise. As for the rule book they do have the alpha draft on the campaign page for download :) FWW is a great game that I love but then Modiphius (and Warlord regarding SD) have a lot more experience in making those kinds of games really.
there is only so many different you can make with 4 stats. then it's 1 set mutant power and one random each game. as an avid mini gamer that does not like lost building, this is great
I'm really liking these breakdowns! I do have a question though - when you discuss the risk assessment idea, if the project is actually that developers first title, first crowd fund etc what else would you look for to add on that decision? Or would it be an auto-no for yourself to back a first time project? Thanks
That’s a great question and one I’ve been thinking about myself. For me a first time creator would absolutely not be an auto-no, we’ve all got to start somewhere and I’ve backed a few first timers over the years. For me the risk assessment has three clear tiers: all good, avoid and uncertain. First timers would most likely fall into the uncertain category. It doesn’t mean you shouldn’t back a project but at least be aware that the creator is learning through this process and show some grace through that. Hopefully that makes it a bit clearer :)
Love the video game, love the Rpg game (unique mechanics of reroll and pushing yourself out of limits + mutations). The Skirmish game seems to have learned from the rpg and i can't wait to try it. And it's pretty cheap for a wargame with 4 warbands some terrains, full tokens and special dices... No reason not to back it up in my eyes. Denying the work of many people with a 6minutes youtube video because the kickstarter isn't much clear is a bit rude imho...
Why did they not make figs of the 2 human characters in the video game (Magnus and Selma)? The animal-headed ones are included and it would make road to eden fans consider playing the humans cuz rn, I would rather play the unique animals I spent 18+ hours with rather than plain dudes who I do not even know anything about just saying
Very cool minis, the only reason I can think of for no gameplay is because you can print and play all of the assets and just play it yourself but not everyone has the luxury of time to do that

This is probably a slightly dumb reason to back it, but I loved the video game so much I couldn’t resist.

Great video. A good overview that covers everything I needed to know. Thank you 🙌
Glad it was helpful!
very happy to have stumbled across your channel, love these breakdown videos!
You’re too kind, thank you!
The re-roll mechanic is unique to skirmish games.
Interesting, I thought there were other skirmish games out there with re-roll mechanics

the whole point of the game according to free league is that it should be easy for new players, that is why it might seem basic

I'v played the 2000AD set and it's great. It's designed by Andy Chambers. So if you love somethinging not gw for once, why not this?
As I said it'd be a great intro skirmish game if you've never played one before, and the setting rocks

I want this for the RPG minis alone. If the wargame works I might use it but that's secondary to me.
There are 3 source books for the RPG so its possible we get new models in the future. I like the setting and its reasonably priced so it was an autoback for me.
Yeah I really hope so, it’s really well priced and I hope it does continue to be supported

The project page is super naff for this one. Miniatures look great though.
Enjoying your content mate, appreciate it.
It definitely was succinct but it more or less gets the point across. Would’ve loved to see more preview and gameplay content though.
Do you know what the miniatures are made out of.
