    Plot summary fro Netflix:
Among the eccentrics and cult personalities in the stranger-than-fiction world of big cat owners, few stand out more than Joe Exotic, a mulleted, gun-toting polygamist and country western singer who presides over an Oklahoma roadside zoo. Charismatic but misguided, Joe and an unbelievable cast of characters including drug kingpins, conmen, and cult leaders all share a passion for big cats and the status and attention their dangerous menageries garner. But things take a dark turn when Carole Baskin, an animal activist and owner of a big cat sanctuary, threatens to put them out of business, stoking a rivalry that eventually leads to Joe's arrest for a murder-for-hire plot, and reveals a twisted tale where the only thing more dangerous than a big cat is its owner.

I get asked a lot about whether being a practicing attorney is like being a lawyer on TV. I love watching legal movies and courtroom dramas. It's one of the reasons I decided to become a lawyer. But sometimes they make me want to pull my hair out because they are ridiculous. Today I'm taking a break from representing clients and teaching law students how to kick ass in law school to take on lawyers in the movies and on TV. While all legal movies and shows take dramatic license to make things more interesting (nobody wants to see hundreds of hours of brief writing), many of them have a grain of truth. This is part of a continuing series of "Lawyer Reaction" videos. Got a legal movie or TV show you'd like me to critique? Let me know in the comments!
Typical legal disclaimer from a lawyer (occupational hazard): This is not legal advice, nor can I give you legal advice. Sorry! Something else to consider about the word 'disappearance' on the power of attorney is that this is a guy who made numerous trips to Costa Rica for questionable reasons, (according to Carol) flew a plane illegally and without registering flights, and may have been doing other shady stuff. Most people wouldn't anticipate disappearing, but if you're doing dangerous things and deliberately not leaving a trail to follow to avoid getting caught then disappearing suddenly becomes a lot more likely.

If anyone was curious on an update. The GW zoo is effectively closed- On June 1, ownership of the zoo was given to Carol Baskin and Jeff Lowe was given 120 days to vacate. On August 17, the USDA suspended Lowe’s exhibitor license, meaning he could no longer run the zoo. Garvin County Sheriff's Office deputies and USDA officials had reportedly began investigating the zoo after receiving a report that lions were ill, with their ears covered in flies and blood. Of the animals that were onsite, 42 tigers, 4 black bears, 11 wolves and a grizzly are now at the non-profit Wild Animal Sanctuary in Colorado that takes in abused big carnivores. They have over 600 rescued animals on 10,000 acres.

And they provide conservation efforts through their breeding programs that at this point are helping keep the wild animals alive.

My friends warned me off of watching this documentary because they said it would make me furious.
The reality, watching just this video *about* the documentary, is that no, it would make me cry. Because even just hearing the short clips regarding Joe killing his tigers was enough to nearly bring me to tears.

That's why i never watched the documentary, i knew it would make me depressed (well, *more* depressed, last year and a half has been a doozy). There really needs to be more federal laws around non domesticated animal ownership, cause these aren't the only big cat "zoos" that treat the animals just as badly as Joe exotic.

This is also why I didn't watch it. I get that it was crazy escapist shit for a lot of people in a devastating time, but I just couldn't get past thinking about all the tigers killed. Too horrific.

When I was little there was a family friend who had a tiger. He worked for the Cincinnati zoo as a handler and something had happened (I don't know the details) and he ended up with her. Drove her around in an old cop car cause the partition kept her from climbing up front with him. He loved that big girl. She wasn't an attraction she was family.

I mean... there's almost an exception for when the person offering legitimately has a big enough audience that them mentioning you would legitimately benefit you, however, that person almost certainly would have no trouble affording to just pay you such that if they're not willing to, they're pretty sketchy, so it kind of cancels out.

I was a legal Marine, a paralegal of sorts and it's the sad case in the military that most enlisted military members don't know the UCMJ, the Uniform Code of Military Justice (the laws that govern the military) hardly at all. I had numerous times where a Sergeant would make the remark he was going to charge me with such and such article not knowing I was a legal Marine to try to coerce me into doing something and I always responded with "With all due respect Sergeant you can try, but this doesn't fit the elements of that article. I'm a legal Marine." the look on their faces when they realized they couldn't play me like others was priceless. I had to fight smiling to not fall into the disrespect section of the UCMJ and actually be guilty of something lol.

@@thethievesdomain8360 Yeah a smirk could be seen as disrespecful. Don't have to respect the man or woman, but you have to respect the rank regardless. I almost got NJPed (a form of formal punishment) because I was wearing a black trenchcoat walking to the PX (store) and someone behind me yelled "Hey where you goin? Plannin to shoot up the PX?" I didn't even think about it, threw the bird and kept walking. Next thing I know I got a Corporal in my face screaming about disrespect and how he's going to report me and to take him to my Sergeant so I did. Thankfully my Sergeant called him out for being an asshat and it ended there. ...but could have gotten me in a lot of trouble. Have to be on your guard about your behavior and who you are talking to at all times in the military.

@@TresTrefusis Not that it would have been a fun time for you, but honestly that Corporal probably could have gotten himself into some shit if he actually tried to make something serious of it. You can't shout stupid shit in the dark and also expect whoever you're talking to to know who you are. Knowledge is a component of Article 89. Also it's a defense that the officer's conduct was pretty flagrantly unprofessional. Loudly cracking off about shooting places up doesn't sound like appropriate official conduct to me; but that's wild speculation on my part.
Regardless of the latter, the first bit stands though. Pointing these out is probably how your Sergent got him to piss off.

“Fun Fact: Joe didn’t sing that song!” Yeah, we noticed. There’s a part in the show where Joe is listening to, and singing along with, the song, and they sound nothing alike. The guy on the recording sounds like a pretty traditional, generic country singer, while Joe sounds like Arin Hanson’s impression of Larry the Cable Guy. 🤣
