New video - 2 years later - Liquid Rubber update on my deck: th-cam.com/video/iI3UmN2-Qe0/w-d-xo.html You can find my written steps for how to waterproof a plywood deck here: abbottsathome.com/how-to-waterproof-a-plywood-deck-roof-or-balcony/
I noticed that on the video that Liquid Rubber has produced, they lay the Geo-Textile tape down during the Primer application. That would probably avoid the extra heavy coating you had initially of the Poly that took so long to dry. It may also help saturate the tape and have it lay right onto the wood, since the primer is much thinner.
Here’s a link to their instructions, I followed their 3 course application recommended when 2 boards meet, to fill the gap. 👍 cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1442/2252/files/Application-Guide-Liquid_Rubber_Polyurethane-Deck-Coating.pdf?v=1591645547
I Had a tiled balcony that leaked roughed up the tiles , applied liquid flash then a rubber paint to walk on no more leaks that was 20 plus years ago , approx 15 years ago built a balcony , just like this one , done it the same way , joints are cracking and need redoing now , but heh 15 years on the beachfront , very harsh conditions , excellent stuff ,, in fact last week done my caravan roof to stop a leak , , 2 coats , storms next day , no more leaks , product i used was called liquid flash in Aust , but its the same product from the looks
Hello, I was wondering how you finished the outer edge of the deck. I don't see any metal flashing to wrap the corner. I don't want to use it anyways. Could we use the geo-textile tape and fold it to wrap that edge corner? Or no need anything at all? Great tutorial video. Thank you.
Hi! I wrapped the edge and the joint where the overhang meets the shed wall with the geotextile, then coated the whole area with Liquid Rubber since I didn’t have a drip-edge installed. 👍
Is it slippery when wet? I have an apt with a 150 sqft balcony/patio area sitting above the carport. I had new OSB subfloor, waterproof paper, durock and tile laid down a couple of years ago. With the recent TX rain, it keeps getting wet; water sips through grout lines and has now rotten about 2' x 3' section of subfloor. As a result, the enclosed carport gets tons of water. Wondering if I could use this on top of existing tiles, after repairing the rotten out area of course.
You can call the Liquid Rubber help line about using it over tile. I think you can, but definitely double check. I wouldn't call it slippery but water can make anything a little more risky. BUT, they have a textured version that's even more slip-resistant.👍
@@AbbottsAtHome Thank you for replying so fast! The current tile is slip-resistant and because my Dad stays in the apt from time to time, I don't want it to become a hazard. I will look into the texture one. 👍
It doesn’t peel like latex paint would. Ours still looks new. But, it’s not like we’re eating meals up there. That would be a lot more chair scraping than we’re doing. So, I’m not sure how well it would hold up to daily chair scraping from adults. 🤷♀️
I don’t know what it would be in liters. I used less than 5 gallons. They have a square footage formula to help you figure out how much you need. I used more than they recommended, mainly because I always overdo everything. 👍
I did a 25x 12 deck like this. Double layered 3/4 sheets offset seems Geo tape with primer go heavy on seems.. wet all geo tape with primer Use 4x4 flashing, nail to deck not wall. Dont cover with trim board till end 3x1 cedar trim. Cover entire deck with primer do on nice day will need to dry for 2-4 hrs Apply liquid rubber using a roller and a painters pole. Pick a direction and stay with it. Dont spred in different directions it will look like 💩. Paint liquid rubber up flashing like 3 inches of the 4x4 flashing. Once you have like 3-4 coats down (a few days later). Pre paint 3x1 trim same color as house. Place a spacer block under trim board and nail trim to house at the studs. Caulk all seems nails and top edge. touch up paint And done Metal trip lip on outside edge or z drip if you have fascia
I haven't seen any scratches yet. But, I know what you mean. I think some people build a floating deck over this. I like the vinyl plank idea. Vinyl planks could work, if it's sealed enough to keep water from getting under it. :)
Thanks so much. I have a 13x16 deck on the second floor. I want to put a workshop under it. My deck boards are starting to suffer so thinking of plywooding over all of it, leaving the old decking on for strength and the fact I used galvanized nails and they are brutal to pull out. I don’t have the energy for that anymore, lol thanks again for responding

So, I can't say what would happen to it in constant direct sunlight. But, I really love the look and feel of this product so far.
We installed the same product two years ago in Alberta, Canada on a direct south facing deck. The temps get at hot as 38C/100F in the summer and as cold as -30C/-22F in the winter and it's held up great! We installed over older Duradek and saved approx $4,000 doing this ourselves.
Hi Jodie! Mine is a little over 2 years old and still holding up great. I recorded a new video about it: th-cam.com/video/iI3UmN2-Qe0/w-d-xo.html Did you have scratches and damage to the Liquid Rubber that caused the saturation? Or was it deck boards and the water penetrated from underneath? Just curious about what you think went wrong. Or do you think it just needs to be reapplied every 4 or 5 years? Thanks!
I do have a drip edge. I put it under the deck that overhangs that side by an inch. And, I have that waterproofing on the edge of that deck and on the bottom, up to the drip edge. 👍
How is your deck holding up? I'm on the fence about doin vinyl vs liquid rubber. It's very hard to fi d any reviews on long term liquid rubber reviews.
You should definitely use the primer. That will help it get a better grip on the surface. The geotextile is only needed if you have joints between boards or between floor and wall. Better safe than sorry. 👍

Great Video! My wife and I are looking at doing this to a small balcony. Thank you for all the links! In the beginning it looked like the product color was grey. On the final closeup it appeared white. Did that really happen or is it just the lighting? Also, how slippery is the deck after it rains? -Rick
Thanks, Rick!! It’s definitely just the lighting. The color doesn’t really change as it dries. It’s a medium grey. The deck is surprisingly not slippery. It feels like linoleum so if it was really wet and you had slippy shoes on, you might slip. But, I wouldn’t say it’s any more slippery than a wet wood deck. But, just in case, they make a textured version of this too. 😁
That would be a very bad idea. Nails/screws would compromise the waterproofing and standing water caught between your wood deck boards would sit there until they penetrated the plywood.
It’s about 5” on one side and 7” on the other. I think it’s sold in 20’ lengths, but it’s been a while since I bought it. You’ll probably find it in the roofing aisle near gable vents, if your store is set up like mine. 👍
I priced an aluminum waterproof decking system for a 40 sq ft entrance porch for my son's house. Extremely expe nsive. I'm skeptical this would hold up to the constant foot traffic of a main entrance. Maybe with an outdoor carpet on top.
Good question. I’m not sure how long this would hold up to front entrance foot traffic. It is very durable. But, it probably requires maintenance (a fresh layer) from time to time. I’d definitely get the textured liquid rubber for a main entrance deck. Good luck!!

How many liters of Liquid Rubber were used to make 5 coats?

Did you use the smooth or textured liquid rubber?
I used the smooth, but applying it with a nappy roller gave it a little texture. 👍
Hi what kind of metal did you use what is the width of it ?, and where can I buy it , and you just cut to your specific length
How has this held up 18mo later?
Still looks good, no leaks. 👍
How strach resistant is it if I put metal chairs on it?? Thanks
I dragged a 2x4 bench frame across it and it didn't make a mark. But, I'd avoid sharp edges to keep it nice longer.
