- Spring wildflowers are just so uplifting. They are among the first plants to signal that Spring is on its way. Plus, they provide valuable food for pollinators just waking up from the winter! Join Rosanne as she expands her woodland garden with 13 new varieties of native, shade-loving wildflowers.
Before, the garden consisted of:
1. Jack-in-the-Pulpit (Arisaema triphyllum)
2. Solomon Seal (Polygonatum sp.)
3. Bloodroot (Sanguinaria canadensis)

I adore bloodroot, sanquinsorba. So gorgeous in early spring. My blackbird hates my dwarf Irises, he pulls them out every year, just like my Aubrieta to line his nest together with my Persian cat's hair. I gave up to ever see them bloom properly XD Hepatica is so lovely. Tiny but adorable. And difficult. I hope it loves your woodland. Such a good idea to change the garden to be more accessible and flowery. I can't wait for the video of the growth and berries.
Thank you so much! I know that some of my new plantings will thrive, yet others will not. I love the wildlife, and everyone needs to eat, but it's hard to see plants dug up or chewed down. You’ve planted so many of my natural SW Wisconsin native wildflowers! Dutchman’s Breaches, May Apples, Hepatica, Bloodroot etc.
It makes me thankful for what is literally in my own backyard! These friends come back every Spring after our hard winters, and always make me happy while walking woods, paths, and fields. I received red banberry from a friend many years ago. It reseeds freely so I watch for new plants each spring, editing out any that are trying to grow outside of the desired area. It’s never been much of a problem.

I am on the same garden path here in Portland Oregon. Last year I added curved stepping stones on the slope of our eastern border between two red cedar trees. This year I am planting, undaunted by the unusual weather swings. You have given me my shopping list! Many thanks.

I too have a woodland garden that I completely changed from last year, planting 9 shrubs, 2 more to come. I have a few flowers out around a large tree. I also added a stone wall, with the pavers I used last year, for my walking path. It's so nice to have Spring coming into action! 🌱🌿🍀 I'm curious as to how you connected the chickenwire behind. Did you have to twist all ends together with needle nose pliers? I have some chickenwire but, to tell you the truth, I'm a bit leery of it. Afraid of cutting myself!

As far as the wire, we fastened it with heavy-duty staples to the wood pole. The wire only goes about 2/3 the way around the pole. I used an 8 foot length of 2 ft. wire and wrapped it around the pole as far as 2 ft would reach. It was actually easier than I anticipated. As always, thanks for watching and commenting. 🌹

It's such a pleasure when I find another video from you. The woodland garden will be just as beautiful as the rest of your garden. We have a wild patch of may apples growing nearby. Indian pink is another lovely woodland flower, that has a deep red bloom with a yellow star at the top. I look forward to seeing it all grow, thanks for sharing.

What a wonderful informative video. You included so much information and detail. All the new additions to your woodland garden will be great. I have 2 kinds of mayapple. One is from my mother’s garden so it’s special to me. In my garden the mayapple has spread profusely in the last few years. I’m in zone 8b. I hope yours don’t take over your allotted space.

Love your garden. However, I would like to add that one Virgin's bower clematis is capable of covering the pole. It is a very large vigorous clematis, 4 of them is an overkill.

Hi Linda, Yes! We were able to "re-home" the hosta into other areas of our garden that still had bare ground. There's not much bare space left, however! 😏

How big does the sum and substance hosta get? Thank you!
It can get three feet in diameter or more. Ours in that area keep getting chewed down by bunnies, so they haven't got very large. But, I love that chartreuse color to brighten up a dark space.
Hello Rosanne...I am enjoying your channel! I would like to plant some groundcover underneath our elevated deck which gets no sun. I would prefer something that does not grow tall. I live in Central Indiana. What types of groundcovers might you suggest?
Without seeing the area, I really am just speculating. But, I"d say your area sounds like a challenging spot with no sun and probably no rain either. The toughest plant I know of, and lovely as well, is Hosta. I'd plant them very dense, as they won't grow very fast in those conditions. Plus, if you get a variegated, or chartreuse variety, such as Sum and Substance, it would visually brighten up the spot. Woodland wildflowers need moist soil and some light. Good luck with whatever you decide!
@@RosannesGarden I have some Hosta's planted underneath the deck, which is on a sloped bank. I am wanting to plant a groundcover to fill in around them.
A really interestig combination, I bet it'll look nice. Though I'd keep an eye on the dog in there, some of those plants are pretty poisonous.

question, how do you plant around trees? I have tried over and over to plant perennials around trees, but the trees absorb all the water leaving my soil constantly dry...even though I replaced the existing soil with quality soil. Also, the tree roots grew so tight around my planting area that it was almost impossible after a couple of years to dig up remaining plants to relocate them. I had a planter in among this area as well, and tree roots grew up inside the planter! I finally had to give up trying to plant around trees. Any suggestions?
Not all trees have roots so abundant and close to the top of the soil as you describe. Those trees seem extra challenging. Perhaps, under those trees, I might consider a shade-tolerant groundcover. Many groundcovers prefer moisture, but can adapt to less ideal situations. Dry shade is challenging, especially when plants are trying to establish themselves. But, once they do become established (maybe a full year), many are surprisingly resilient. Hosta, fall into this category as well. Give them plenty of water in the first year and they are usually fine after that. Hope this helps!
Do you have information or a video on the drip irrigation? Also are all the berries mentioned edible by birds? Poisonous?
The drip irrigation was installed professionally. It is one of three drip zones we have in our garden. As to the berries, the red and white baneberries (Actaea) are very toxic. Birds stay away from them, as do rabbits and purportedly, deer. However, we have plenty of berry trees that the birds flock to.
Are you using garden hose
Hi Teresa, the hoses are part of our irrigation system and are not ordinary garden hoses. We have our zones set up so that I can just irrigate the woodland garden if I choose to. It's very convenient.
When nothing is growing and showing above ground, how can you tell where to dig without harming what is already there? I'd be afraid to dig.
That can be an issue. Most of the plants were showing when I planted the new wildflowers. But, I did occasionally dig up a Jack-in-the-pulpit corm. I just buried it elsewhere.
Are you using water timer. What kind of timer ?
Hi, a timer is part of our overall irrigation system. We usually only run the system manually, and only when it is dry.
How do you keep weeds from between your stone pathway and moss to grow instead
Great question. It takes a lot of hand weeding. I just get into a zone and pluck away. Surprisingly, if the ground is wet, it doesn’t take that long.
Where do you live? I live in South East Wisconsin. I want to develope my gardens into natural native plantings. There are a few shaded areas
There are a few trillium. I cut down some overgrown box elder trees
Now the trillium are struggling do to the added sun. Any suggestions for more native plants?
Hi and greetings to South East Wisconsin! Glad to hear you are welcoming native plantings to your garden. I do have some trillium that actually are in quite a bit of sun and they do fine.They go dormant and disappear sometime in August, but they come up strong every spring. So... good luck on your trillium! Regarding other plants, I'd recommend perusing (online or request a paper catalog) native plants from prairienursery.com or prairiemoon.com. One is a Wisconsin company and the other one is out of Winona, Minnesota. They'll have lots of good ideas on native plants!

@@RosannesGarden I'm in metro Milwaukee, zone 5 so yes your a little colder. I was wondering if plants your growing will work for me.
What watering systems are in your garden?
We have a professionally-installed irrigation system with both rotors (that spray) and drip zones. The hoses in the woodland garden are part of that system and considered "drip hoses" not soaker hoses, as I stated in the video. I hope it wasn't confusing; my husband corrected me later. Hope that helps.
Podophyllum peltatum spreads aggressively over time
Greetings! I have heard that, but it doesn't seem to be the case with mine. Maybe they're not getting enough sun, or the soil pH is wrong, but I am on my second batch right now. I was hoping for a colony, but no such luck yet.
