    can you tell me what speed you're running the lathe for the roughing out ? I'm a novice and just blew up a beautiful exotic wood french rolling pin blank - splintered the purpleheart segments to pieces - I think I was running it way too slow, compared to the speed it looks like you're running when roughing out ... THANKS !!

      Speed we'd recommend 1400 to 1800 rpm max. But the segmented construction will need very sharp tools, the grain direction of the pieces will effect which tools are used. Hope this helps
