I believe that in this case the motor inside the gearbox has failed (bad windings or short circuit). The reason because the gate drops so violently is because the closing procedures call for 3 steps: in the first one the hold-clear device is no longer fed with current, so it is able to release the gate, in the second one the gate drops by gravity and in the last one, approx. after 45° the motor helps the gate to soft-land into 90° position by acting as an engine-brake. When the "up" command is received, the motor is powered up, the gate begins to rise and, when in 0° position the hold-clear device is fed again with current and the motor is disconnected, keeping the gates in the resting position as a new cycle takes over. There is another video on youtube showing approximately the same thing where the only differences are the gate impact on concrete, and the fact that the gates rise normally at the end of the cycle. In this case, since the gates just drop, but don't move anymore, I suspect the motor is no longer operative and needs replacement.
Visually it looks like the normally functioning gate never free-falls, so I think these gates are being slowed with dynamic braking by the motor the entire time (or at least it kicks on at an early angle like 70 degrees).
@@kdmq they are and your supposition about the motor kicking on at an early angle is correct. But the broken gate here has a faulty motor with shorted or bad windings or at least there is some kind of interruption in the circuit that never feeds current to the motor so that when the hold-clear device is de-energised effectively unlocking the gate, the engine is not acting as a break and the whole gate smashes into the ground, because it goes down only by gravity. And when the train has gone, the faulty engine/circuit is unable to lift the gate, that stays permanently horizontal.
And the guy that just went over the tracks got lucky. A second or so earlier, and he would have wiped that gate out, along with a scratch or two on his car, for sure!
