What a fascinating conversion project! 🚗🔧 Turning a G series Porsche 911 into a 993 windscreen setup is a unique and impressive upgrade. The precision and attention to detail required for this transformation are amazing! It’s always exciting to see classic cars get a modern touch. Can’t wait to see how the final product turns out, this is definitely a game-changer! 👏🔥
first time commenting. been subbed for nearly 12 months. i dont do car builds, i am into fiberglass boat builds my self. i have completed 4 builds which takes me around 18 months for each build n then i sell them. i dont do this for a living(retired)its to help me keep my Bipolar n OCD in check. my kids cant believe it take me 18 months per build instead of 18 years with the 2 anchors i have each day lol. i do this for the love of it n learning new skills with in the fiberglass world. i am self taught, a simple youtube channel helped me understand the very basics n the skill levels increase as u learn n understand more. i came across ur channel through a feed from Tarvish. love Harry, have watched Harrys playlist build twice n the other build playlists once. really looking forward to seeing wat u do with Harry in the future. with the skill levels u have gained through the other builds Harry is in for a treat. Harry well deserves ur fresh skill levels Jeff. have a great new year Jeff n Mrs Jeff. all the best to all ur viewers n patrons on ur channel for the new year.
Thanks for watching mate. I am with you, I will always need projects until the day I die. I need to keep my brain active and you can always surprise yourself of what you can do if you just give it a go.
Funny I was going to say the same, my cowl on my 1987 911 on the left side seems to be slightly off just enough, maybe 1/8-3/8 of an inch, to cause issues and I’ve decided to switch to 993 windshield and seals and then Jeff posts a vid. Thanks Jeff!
Better to have it sealed up than a bit of chrome bling. Both would be nice, but if have to choose, keeping it dry inside wins hands down. What a killer car. Such an awesome project and anyone that hasn't should go watch the whole series.
What people don't realise is that the aluminium trim in the windscreen rubber is critical to making the rubber fit correctly, it's not just for decoration. It needs to be shaped exactly to match the edge of the windscreen before fitting it into the rubber and installing the screen. There are even techniques for adjusting the shape of the trim to get the corners of the screen to fit tightly into the opening. If the aluminium is out of shape, it will pull the rubber out of shape and you won't get it to fit properly. Anyhow, problem solved with the 993 screen. The 993 is based on the same body shell (with updates mainly underneath) so the windscreen openings match.
Wow first endevour with a glue in screen. It is definitly not the easiest screen as the modern screens have large masking area's and even bigger interior trims to cover up adhesive blubbering out from the joint. Well done!👌
Wow, I too have searched the interweb for topics on glue in screens. I searched your vids for anything. Anyway, I had a crack at converting my rubber mounted screen on my Galant Hardtop rally car over to glue in. I completed the job on both screens last week, then you release this vid. I'm glad I followed tje same steps as you. But the product I used was the 255 Ultra. I didn't know the 258 was a thing. With all that said, I hope my screens don't pop out under speed and off raid conditions. Cheers for the content. David
Love newer stuff in an older car. This windscreen is going to be a dream after the original style rubber mounted one. I'd like to see a chrome strip but you may be able to find something later down the track that will suit. Excellent job. Nice work with Mrs Jeff and the Raceworks cap too. :D
Great upgrade, Love how Porsche have a inner seal to finish off the trim, running a VW Corrado its one thing its missing I know a newly trained screen fitter and having watched loads fitted over the years, He does it differently as its taught as the right way but not the easiest - the bonder goes on the screen with a tall beaded then placed but there's more risk to bead getting caught on the body ect
I watched Harry's build from when you first got it Jeff & as you say the original car was far from perfect. Anything could have happened over the years Mate but everything you did was on point. I wonder how the guy over in the USA is going that bought the Datsun? Thanks for sharing. Billy J... Queensland, OZ.
For those that are keeping their 911 screens, use the seal manufactured and sold by URO - it is wider than the original Porsche seal and it makes it SO much easier to install. It still takes the original windshield trim (chrome or black).
Great video. I agree with the thought behind it 100%. At some point in a driver grade performance car function over form takes precedence. This will help many people with the later G series cars for sure to convert. Although I'm sure many will need some rust repair in the lower window frame before doing the conversion.
Good work there man. I like the chrome trim but this is an excellent compromise. Happy New Year to you and the Boss. We are in Bulgaria on holiday and it is the middle of winter. 5c and sunny. Really nice. Cheers.
I think it says Homebuilt by Jeff so do whatever you like or need to and if anyone doesn’t like it ……. Happy new year from Argyll Scotland 🏴 to you and Mrs Jeff the blooper Princess 🙌
Lol, was that old loose windscreen really held in by what looked, your imagination? Thank god you never had to do any emergency braking! Thanks for all the content
Jeff, The 993 Windscreen opening is different. Where the inner rubber seal goes is wider sheet metal peck. Hope this holds. Normally you put outer seal on with installation and the Sealant glue goes on the Windscreen. I had a 993 and also 964. On 964 Airbag cars the Screen is also glued in, but with the seals. When the screen is replaces the seals have be cut.
Looks good Jeff and always remember your car so do what you want. I like the look and wonder how it would look with black side window trims too. Not normally fan of using different trim colour chrome & black but given black would be on windows 🤷🏼♂️
I think it looks great. Never been a chrome fan. I can't recall if you did much in the way of chassis reinforcement when you did the build, but most cars of that era had really flimsy chassis from the factory. Maybe a few extra bars on the undercarriage would keep the body from flexing under hard driving.
Great DYI video, I was thinking about doing the same with mine but was not sure if it was even possible. BTW, 34 C converts to 93 F. A warm day for sure but not terrible.
You should have left the internal rubber off as your car has narrower surface area for the adhesive because it would usually have a rubber in screen. If the internal rubber was left off the screen off the screen would sit flatter and the adhesive would have more room to spread and grip
The all black is okay, although I wonder if there's some exterior trim from some other car with a chrome finish that would fit. In any case, having a windscreen that doesn't leak (or fall out) is more important. 🙂
Happy new year to the entire family. I'm curious if the noise is lover now? It could reduce the noise... my old 74 has wind noise from the door seals as well. Here you need to put on extra gaskets. A small gasket that is glued to the car itself. From where the fender is and all the way to the top corner behind your head. Please let us know if your glued screen has some noted benefits. Regarding trim... i don't know. I kind of like the black.👍
The perfect addition. It does stiffen the chassis by nature. As you start losing the chrome trim, and you are planning on a repaint, why not go more restomod exterior with less chrome accents and modernize the 2.7rs style? Black with stone grey graphics?
Think the windscreen looks great. Those front seats are awful, in the UK you can pick up boxster seats so easily, the 911 style seats look amazing and are so comfortable. You should get a set and retrim them in your colours, I'd watch that!
Happy New Year Mr Jeff and Fam. This looks so much cleaner, and looks fine with the chrome around the rest of the car imho Crazy to think modern adessive is so strong it adds structural rigidity, that thought never crossed my mind, but it makes total sense.
Noticed your driver’s tartan has pulled down a bit. I know you have a ton to do, but fixing that in a future episode would be a good lesson in “what caused it?”
Any plans to stiffen the body? I'm surprised with the roll cage there is much flex in the body. I added a bar behind the dash and in back between shock mounts on my fox mustang and it went from tin can to bank vault feel on door closure.
Too bad you didn't paint the few paint chips on the edge of the roof while you had access. Love the video nevertheless, as usual. PS: Do you have a new license plate for the car?
I Jeff I just installed my first windscreen with the rubber and cord into my 77 911. What a difficult process and I'm not happy with the result It does not fit well in the 4 corners . can I remove the screen and just get the inner and outer rubber strips? Can the same be done for the rear glass too? Thanks.
@@HomeBuiltByJeff Thanks Jeff I spent $1200 for the new '77 glass already. I guess I'm stuck with it. Well, it was good for 45 years I wish I saw your video a month ago.
@@HomeBuiltByJeff I got it from Pelican parts USA then I'm in Canada where our dollar is only worth 69 cents US. Today I sealed up my engine and will soon install. 3 year project similar to yours.
The purest can't complain about this mod too much. You did backdate the car after all. That and well, its not a mint factory example. Restomods are done as they are usually better than original and retain the ethos of a car. My opinion is you've made the right call. Driving with a loose windshield is just a nonce move both from your safety point of view and others. That and acco history or not, these old cars are kinda made like crap despite what people say about old vs new so umh, woo. P.S. it looks better. I get the tie it into the lights and mirrors but sometimes too many accents look shouty. That and chrome on orange is a bit odd. TL:DR - you do you, screw the haters.
"That one country"? hmmm... ok a super easy way to calculate C to F is to multiply by 2 then add 30 (34c X 2 = 68 + 30 = 98) not totally accurate but it gives a good ballpark(or do I say pitch) of an area of the temp. Can be reversed F to C, subtract 30 the divide by 2 (98F - 30 = 68 / 2 = 34) and that kids is todays lesson. ;)
You can also just break it up by 10: -10 - 0 = extreme cold 0-10 = cold 10-20 = cool 20-30 = warm 30-40 = hot 40-50 = extreme heat That’s all you really need to know 95% of the time
I actually like the black trim, in combination with the black stripes
I would still prefer the chrome, but I like a windscreen that doesn't leak and stays in place better ;)

The black trim works well with the Rally stripes.

I wonder how difficult it is to add a painted chrome strip (some sort of body lining tape?) to the rubber strip?
