These things are garbage. Absolute garbage. It's like GM took all the engineers that failed engineering school and put them to work. Still shows in GM cars today. No wonder the Japanese beat us.
My dad had 80's mercedes with these compressors. Now I'm helping a friend with the AC on his 85 chevy pickup and he's got one too. I've known the "R4" name for years but never thought about what it meant, thanks for the info.
I have this compressor in my 1994 gmc sierra 4.3L that i jus purchased and the compressor is very noisy. It was replaced recently. Is it normal to be so noisey!!??
A new compressor may take a little effort to turn on the bench due to the lack of oiling. Make sure there is oil in the compressor and turn it 20 times and it should start to get easier to turn. A compressor on the vehicle should be easy to turn by hand. Thanks for watching.
Noistest compressor ive ever had
bravoo

Master how can I remove the connecting rods and piston from a GM R4 compressor
How freely should the clutch rotate? Mine rotates, but certainly takes some effort!

The loudest compressor out there
GM used these up into the mid 90s.
Thanks for the update James. I worked for GM up to 93, but I lost track of the R4 use. PP
