      Castlevania 3! Music rivals the 16 bit games, 4 playable characters you can switch between on the fly, branching paths, some of the best visuals the NES had to offer. And it's even better as Akumajō Densetsu on the Famicom. If you haven't heard the improved Japanese soundtrack of the Japanese version, go check it out.
      Castlevania 3, Super Castlevania 4, Bloodlines, and Rondo are all required ClasicVania.

      Yes, and the boss theme in Genesis is creepy and atmospheric, if not melodic. Some of the tunes in Castlevania 4 are just grating. That said, I do love both. Genesis is still better.

    I'm very happy with the victory going to Bloodlines😁 I received the game for my birthday when I was younger and it blew me away. My cousin had Super Castlevania for the SNES and I remember getting bored with it and the slow down time was awful ( especially when hitting the mud men). There is nothing but amazing songs in Bloodlines... just take a listen to level 4 and 6 and I can't believe you said the music was lame in level 2. The music to level 2 is amazing, goes perfectly with the sunken Atlantis design and the music is a perfect theme to go with the water effects. Also, Bloodlines following the Bram Stoker novel was so refreshing, it went against the grain of the typical Castlevania storyline. In conclusion, Bloodlines actually scared me as a kid, maybe it was the faster paced enemies, the more graphic images or the music but it did its trick. I think games about evil should be a bit scary, Super Castlevania didn't do that to me, it was honestly boring to me. Awesome videos guys and as a retro gamer, it's awesome to see the games of my youth being reviewed 😁👍🍷

    I know this is an old video, but seriously? Super Castlevania IV is a masterpiece, and while I do really like Bloodlines, it is nowhere near as good as Super Castlevania IV on the SNES. The level design, the graphics, the awesome swinging and whip mechanic, and the icing on the cake.. the music and sound make for one of the best SNES games ever made.

  • @senatus
    @senatus 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    You guys must be the first couple of dudes in history who think Bloodlines has better graphics. CV4's sprites were bigger, more detailed, and the backgrounds...LOL. Bloodlines was full of entire *screens* which were just a solid color (e.g., climbing the stairs to the first level boss...I haven't seen a screenful of dark blue like that since the 8-bit days).
    In fairness, the first part of the Versilles background looked , but apart from the vast, monocolored spaces, unmarked backdrops and tiny sprites, those bosses...again, LOL! Most of them looked like Tinker Toys.
    That's to say nothing of the muted color palette and utter lack of variety, or length: a speedrun of the two shows how short Bloodlines is.
    Music and sound effects? The SNES sound chip was easily superior. So were the graphical effects, like the see-through fog.
    The next time y'all do one of these, instead of stupidly whining, "Dur, my game has good graphics too!" , why not, y'know, actually *support* such assertions with actual stillshots and clips from the games?
    Bloodlines was decent, even good, but from the 16-bit era, it was in a three-way tie for worst title in the franchise. The 68000 offering looked better but lacked the mechanics. Dracula X looked much better but was far too short and its difficulty was unbalanced. CV4 looked the best but Rondo, while probably the plainest or second-most, had the best gameplay AND replay value IMO.
    The latter two is where the real comparison lies, my lads.

    With all the respect possible I pretty much spat out my drink hearing that Sega has better graphics. I have not played the Sega game but the SNES game has good graphics even by SNES standards. I understand that some people may prefer the small sprites, limited animation and duller colours of the Genesis version but...yeah I guess my inability to appreciate that point of view in full is difficult to conceal.

      I'm not sure how you can say Bloodlines has limited animation. It's far smoother than the SNES game, and really pushed the system to its limits especially with some of the bosses. The colour, despite the Genesis's 64 colours on screen limit, is handled excellently as well, and looks just as good as the SNES game, although with a different art direction.

    I never really played either of the games until I bought the mini consoles. I played Super Castlevania 4 first which blew me away. Upon beating it I wanted to play it again immediately. I really didn't know what to expect when I played bloodlines. Immediately, I felt like the gameplay had gone back a bit as it felt a bit more like the NES ones in my opinion. However, upon seeing this video I do realize it had some improvements (special moves and jumping on stairs) but the SNES had better whip mechanics. Another thing that took me back was the sound on the Genesis really didn't compare to the SNES. Don't get me wrong, Konami did about as well as they could, but the Genesis sound chip was definitely not capable of anything more. Then there's the graphics. I felt like the SNES was more consistent with having good graphics, but the Genesis had some really nice special effects like the statue heads that break off, the gear boss, the ascending floating rock boss, and if I recall correctly there was a nice water effect. I believe this comes from having three more years to perfect the 16-bit graphics and the Genesis having a faster processor. However, both games were awesome. I personally lean towards the SNES game, but it's hard to argue when both games are just that good!

    5:25 to be fair, I’m pretty certain that two characters in the same ending scene doesn’t count as ‘two endings’. Ending, outcome, results, what makes them separate is the fact that they happen differently. In Dark Souls, you either kindle the first flame or you leave the kiln and become the new Dark Lord. In Dishonored, you either keep the peace in Dunwall by neutralizing any major threats instead of killing them, and in turn maintain the social stability of it, or you indirectly tear Dunwall to the ground with relentless murder and in turn spread the rat plague with more needless bloodshed.

    Sorry, but Super Castlevania IV is the better game. More detailed graphics and a more realistic gothic look (Bloodlines was more cartoony looking), better play control (8 directional whip), and more levels...which means more variety. Also, half of the bosses in Bloodlines were either giant suits of armor or golems...so Super Castlevania IV had more of a variety of bosses as well.

    • @Maru96
      @Maru96 10 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      The 8 directional whip wasn't that good, and the jump control on CV4 is weird, i wouldn't say it has better controls: giving you more "freedom" makes the controls awkwards for me, while Bloodlines' controls are tight and very responsive, just the enough improvement that the CV NES controls needed.
      And yeah maybe 4 has more boss "variety", but most of them were pretty boring to kill and didn't require any strategy, just duck and whip whip whip.

    • @retrogameraaron4778

      Marcel Weber Isn't the strategy for beating the bosses in every Castlevania game "duck, whip, duck, whip"? I don't seem to recall any bosses in Bloodlines requiring any special strategy.

    • @Maru96
      @Maru96 10 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      RetroGamerAaron At least i remember some bosses that you actually have to jump + attack like the tower demon or the "wizard" from stage 2, others you have to strategically dodge patterns and then attack like the metal knights on level 2, frankenstein, Death, the columns etc. On CV4 most bosses really were uninsteresting to fight, just some of the last bosses including dracula required an actual strategy.

      The last time I played SCV4, I was able to literally stand and trade shots with many of the bosses and come out ahead without even having to consider dodging. That's what people mean when they say the bosses require no strategy. As for better play control, I prefer jumping on and off stairs to the whip control, which I find actually hurts the overall level design.

    When you look at two games in the same genre, by the same developer, and in the same console generation, the one that's three years newer will generally have much more technical polish. This was especially true during the 4th console generation. It's more interesting to compare titles with similar release dates, like your MK and Mickey Mouse reviews.

    Now I'm a big fan of your show, but, I think Super Castlevania 4 is one of the best SNES games ever, and Bloodlines just can't compare to how innovative and fun Super Castlevania 4 is. The way the whip moves in a 8 directions, the fact you can moonwalk up the stairs, the level design, the way you hang on your whip making the level move in a circle, is just classic. I know, some levels feel disoriented due to the fact you hang on your whip moving the level, but it's supposed to feel like that, It gives you challenge throughout the game. I'm not saying Bloodlines is a terrible game, far from it, It's just the SNES game has a lot more variety than Bloodlines. The genesis game may have made more improvements, but the SNES game the better improvements like moving the whip in 8 directions making the game much easier.

    I think you should've compared Bloodlines to Dracula X instead. Games released later on in the 16-bit era would've obviously been better than those released early on due to progression in technology and advancement of how much they could push the systems.
    Dracula X came out around the same time frame (I know, not exactly the same time, but still).

      Bloodlines is a solid game, great Castlevania game in its own right, and a must-have for any Genesis owner. However, these guys didn't factor in a thing or two, level coherency, something I would've absolutely been all over if I were starring in the video, and the controls, which were tighter on the SNES as well.

      I figured like the SEGA guy said in the video many people would disagree about the SNES game being the better one which is understandable, I can't really say until I play the Genesis version (in before the PC Engine game which came out on Wii VC, it looks awesome) but from what I saw in videos and reviews it seems like a very good game as well.

      I finally played them both and I can say I liked them both, I agree I liked the Genesis version better but I can see why many would prefer the SNES version, the differences are very much like with Contra, the SNES version seemed like an upgraded version of the original NES game while the Genesis version took more liberty in changing the formula but in the right direction.
      To me both Contra and Castlevania on Genesis are better and the multiple endings added more replay value to me but that's because I don't mind the change when done right, I know many people don't like changing what they grew up with.

      Also going to add level coherency to the mix, each level in Super Castlevania IV flows one right into the other creating a coherent world. With the Genesis, you're hopping from Transylvania to Greece, to Italy, to France and then the UK. While I can see the reason why (variety), it just doesn't make the game any more or less enjoyable for me, it's just...there.

    I love these videos and this one I have watched the most by far. I recently played both of these games for the first time, along with Rondo of Blood, and I've come to a very similar conclusion, though I prefer Bloodlines by a wide margin. I think it's telling that Konami didn't stick with the format of Super Castlevania. I didn't enjoy the new whipping mechanics on the SNES as it hurt the level design, in my opinion. I also found the graphics blocky with choppy animation. I thought the SNES game was especially let down by the music, despite its reputation there. Some tunes are good, but some seem inappropriate for a vampire-hunting game. Stages three and seven were particularly boring in that regard with flutes and harps. So I agree that Bloodlines is the better game, though I think Rondo is even better.

    Bloodlines is awesome. Superb soundtrack in glorious FM sound, fast gameplay (one of the main reasons why it's my favorite Castlevania), some spectacular visual effects, a welcome gore dimension and challenging. Castlevania IV is a great entry in the serie, the soundtrack is also superb, visuals are good but some effects looks rather bad, gameplay is bit sluggish and on the easy side. Bloodlines and Chi No Rondo on PC Engine are the best 16-bit Castlevania.

  • @LegendarySuperMario

    The best part, is that I actually grew up with Bloodlines... Playing Super Castlevania IV about 15 years later for the first time and it just felt lesser of an experience. Everything about the Sega game's literally better, loads of blood and detailed, yet sometimes gory sprites, rocking tunes and fun sub-weapons to boot.
    But, if you enjoy the SNES game's whip mechanics better I wouldn't hold it against ya, but MAN is the SNES game easy.

    • @raeglinlegrand3502
      @raeglinlegrand3502 8 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      +L.S.A Serenity in Flames is right Dracula X sucks. Not only it's a port of Rondo of Blood, but it's a bad port, pure and simple regression of the PC Engine cult classic. All the badass moves have been removed on X, all the anime Cutscenes, the game have certainly great graphics but for me it's an 8-Bit castlevania. Bloodlines, IV and Rondo of Blood are far ahead of that game, and sadly, X is behind all of those, it's even behind Castlevania 3 who had on NES several Characters to play with, several multi-path levels and multi ending.
      In Dracula X, you can whip in one direction only, have none of the move of Bloodlines or Rondo of blood and can't even swing with your whip. A regression, pure and simple who don't even worth the considerable amount of money which is asking for these days

    • @TheModernPainter

      +Eric Audry I could've sworn it was on the SNES

    • @raeglinlegrand3502
      @raeglinlegrand3502 8 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      +L.S.A Dracula X is on SNES indeed, but it isn't an original game, it's a port of Rondo Of Blood, who was released exclusively in Japan for the PC Engine cd rom (that home console is called Turbografx 16 in the united States).
      That game was awesome, ask any fan of old school Castlevania and they will told you haow amazinng that pc engine game was. He had Multiple paths, Multiple characters to play, great Anime Cutscenes, Richter belmont (hero of this game) had somme move that required to enter a combianaison on the D-Pad with buttons. He could only whip in one direction and couldn't swing with his whip but the rest was pure awesomeness. Syphony of The Night is the direct Sequel to this game.
      But in 1995, When it was obvious that the PC Engine (or turbografx 16) will never make good sales in the United Staes, Konami decided to make a Port of Rondo of Blood, this awesome PC Engine game, to the Super Nintendo. The result was catastrophic. Most of the Multipath Levels have dissapeared, The anime Cutscenes, due to the cartridge limitations have been purely wiped out and you can only play a completely crippled Richter Belmont. All the great Moves of the PC Engine game have dissapeared and replaced by a gameplay that remenber more of the 8 bits episodes than any other games on the 16 bits. Whip in only one direction, jumping painfully slow, no swinging with whip etc...
      That's why most people hate Dracula X and they are in tehir own rights cause that game isn't fun to play at all after played Bloodlines, Rondo of Blood an even Super Castlevania IV. Only the graphics was better on the SNES but seeing haow much of the original game had dissappeared it wasn't worth that.
      If you want to check on Rondo fo Blood, i invite you to play Castlevania : Dracula X chronicles on the PSP, which include the real original PC Engine Title and his sequel, Symphony of The Night, the cult classic of the PS One
