Reviewing & Ranking Every Season of Rugrats

  • Well this is the biggest show I’ve covered in a while. Before SpongeBob, Rugrats was Nickelodeon’s most critically and commercial successful cartoon, but it takes some effort to go back and see why. Running from 1991 all the way to 2004 requires some level of appeal, and this show about babies had some of that for parents, and a lot of silly shenanigans for the kids. Somewhere along the way, the magic dimmed, but it was still fun to see what the hype was all about, and it should be for you too.
Note: If you’re attentive, you’ll hear some drilling sounds in the background, because there was construction going on next door the day I recorded this. It was the only day it could be low enough for me to record for a while, but I’m sorry for any discomfort it causes you. This is already the longest I’ve ever spent on a single review of a show, so I’m just happy the video’s out and you can hear me the whole way through.

I noticed how Kimi and Dil often had a "movie design" and a tv show design. Dil has the purple suit in the movies, and Kimi has tan skin. It definitely makes sense that they had a "movie" team and assets which also probably explains why Rugrats Go Wild was seen as a worthwhile investment, despite Wild Thornberries not being as big of a show as Rugrats.

I was born in ‘98 so I was watching the show at the time where it was still bigger than SpongeBob, and 2-3 year old me saw Nickelodeon as the “Rugrats channel.” Younger me didn’t notice much difference between the older and newer seasons aside from the new characters and visual styles. However, as an adult when I would catch it late at night on NickRewind (RIP) I could tell that Dil dumbed down the show by a long shot. The older episodes are still great and the differences are like night and day.

I was the same way as a kid. (I watched the Paul Germain episodes long before what came after, too) At the time, I never saw it as "jumping the shark", but natural character growth and progression, because we all face big changes in our life relating to family, like new siblings, relatives getting hitched. I was enamored by it's ambitious aspiration to try new things, in a way that didn't come off as "Poochie"-ing the show. That was before I learned all about the switch in writing staff, and Paul Germain leaving the show after Season 3.
With my brain fully developed, and with the knowledge I know, having gone back and watched the first three seasons and compared to them the later seasons, I agree they're the best seasons, and what I would call "definitive Rugrats". I understand why Paul isn't a fan of the later stuff, especially because he's very particular about what his vision of the show should be, from a creator's perspective. Especially having talked to him (I do talk to him time to time thru e-mail). But while Paul's era of the original show is my favorite, I can't help but still enjoy the later episodes. Even with all of the changes later made to the show, and having a bigger focus on the family aspect of the series, the show still had it's identity, and it never quite lost what made me like it.
The reboot has a nice balance, thanks to having some of Paul's staff, and the later writing staff, and blending in their writing styles, creating a nice middle ground.

I rewatched the Rugrats Movie and Dil's crying *is* unbearable - however, the movie is great, and Rugrats in Paris is still a movie I need to watch at some point - but yeah, I was born in that post-boom era and was six when All Grown Up aired.

Rugrats was an unique show, at least during its first three seasons, because it was about babies, but with a weird, sometimes even creepy tone with those close ups, camera angles, dream sequences and the crude art style. When it was revived, the weirdness was so toned down and the plots became so generic, that it became just another show.

1:09 The changes weren't made for change's sake, the showrunners have provided external context in interviews a little bit before the reboot premiered. What you have to understand is that the new series is set in a refreshed continuity. The cornerstone of the parental satire in the 90s was that it was lampooning the psychobabble phenomenon in the 90s. In the 90s and early 2000s, and to us older viewers, that type of satire worked. Those parenting types all but don't exist anymore for the most part. Parents in their late 20s, and 30s would be millennials, so to support this new timeline, it was a natural cause of change that the parents would be retooled to reflect millennial parents, instead of boomer parents.
In the original, Susie (As much as I like her, and believe she was groundbreaking for African American representation) had all but no flaws, save for a few episodes, and while she worked as a rival to Angelica, her age limited her appearances. The precedent for her current dynamic was set in Rugrats Go Wild, which Kate Boutilier (The current reboot showrunner) wrote. She, and Eryk Casemiro aged down Susie to absorb her into more stories, and keep her from tattling on Angelica, to avoid stories from becoming formulaic. It's a natural evolution, because she has more nuance, and we're allowed to see different angles of her personality rather than just being Angelica's rival, and she actually has flaws. But even with those addendums, she's still all but the same character she was before. They haven't reduced her rivalry with Angelica, or intelligence, but just broadened out her character more.
On paper, it would seem like reviving Rugrats is unnecessary, since we're in a climate where every established IP is getting resurrected in some form. But I think there is more precedent to a Rugrats reboot existing than you'd think. Rugrats has a very ubiqiuitous concept that can appeal to every generation, and the original has stood the test of time for a good reason. There were several attempts to revive the show going as far back as the early 2010s (A friend of mine, Danny Hollifield who was an intern at Klasky Csupo, mentioned that KC and Nick were having conversations about bringing back Rugrats in 2013, and it almost came back). Rugrats is synonymous to the culture, and other age old properties like Looney Tunes, Flintstones and Peanuts have had various reincarnations over the years, so the established criterion for a Rugrats reboot was there.
The first couple of episodes (Which you watched) were the weakest ones. The show was trying to find it's groove again, and it really hadn't gotten out of the original's shadow. But by the last 10 episodes, it finds it's legs and gets really good. It returns to the place of getting into your inner child, but also gets much more ambitious, and explores new territory. Angelica even gets more character development, beyond being the babies' adversary, as she has a new layer of depth and complexity, exploring finding her place in the world, her battles with growing up, and even having a full episode that permits her to be the protagonist for once. This was a good video otherwise. I agree the earlier seasons are better, although I didn't mind the later ones. To me, Rugrats has always stayed some form of consistent, although I've got a soft spot for the Germain era.

It feels like reverse psychology here....

    • @nevermindmyparentsimthepunk

@@consumeroftoons2119 I think that's just simply because we all have our own opinions some people want to see them grow (like me) some people wanted to see them as babies again. I personally wouldn't mind seeing them as adults and some of them with their own kids/babies going on adventures similar to the 2nd season of rugrats, and one or two of them with a preteen like all grown up and their babies/kids/teens having bigger roles in a story like this.
I personally think it would be interesting if Angelica as an adult couldn't get pregnant but really wants to experience that but can't so dives herself into work. and Kimmie's character wanting to be a Childfree adult.
on the top of my head with little thought:
Dil having a podcast about ufos, and conspiracies.
either Lil or phil doesn't like one of their spouses and that spouse not liking them (but in a Angelica sort of way where the spouse acts like they adore their sibling in-law, but is manipulative to them in a way)
Phil being involved in developing video games or spare time is making twitch videos
Tommy coming back to their town after trying to be a film maker but failed or archeologist who lost interest in it.
Chucky being a news anchor or weather man who also loves horror movies because he's not as scared of things anymore or still is but likes horror movies despite him hating being scared of everything
The ginger haired preschooler always falling for a mlm scam
Susie questioning things that seem and sound right in the world but can or are actually problematic, or might just be other perspectives that make her think but still likes her choice
I see fan art of the characters as grown up but with one of friends their friend groups as a married spouse but I personally think that would be weird because they grew up together like family.

All Grown Up really shined when Angelica, Susie and Dil were the main focus of the show. Probably because they have the most developed, and realized personalities. I'm mixed on All Grown Up, I think it was especially great when we had episodes focusing on the aforementioned three, and it was better than it had any right to be. But I also think there's hordes of fans that are overselling it a little bit lately, and I partly think it has something to do with them rebuking the reboot. Which makes some of the newfound praise seem a bit insincere, and more just to point out how they don't like the new thing.

@@eatatjoes6751 I conjure you've seen those early promotional shorts. That's when the hate started, next to the "Betty's a lesbian" controversy. Those shorts are not snippets from the show, and were only made to promote it. (but with different twist endings) The animation in the show is much better, especially later on. I never felt like people were fair to it, or even gave it a chance.
Most of the hate is bandwagoning, and comes from second hand descriptions of the changes, or people basing their opinions off of what other people have said about it. It's both harmless, and really good. The changes don't play out the way people think (Susie isn't submissive, the show does acknowledge Howard, Kimi and Angelica don't have a rivalry), and the show does not rehash old ground, but they've also made positive changes. It preserves what the original brought to the table, but being most of the same writers, they've used the reboot's advantage to change enough up (Becoming more serialized, changing the status quo in a way that sticks, Angelica having her own character arch, and gaining stronger development than she did before, Dil being less selfish and actually growing as a character, the parents having stronger backstories) that it feels fresh, and has a creative vision beyond sticking to what worked before, but preserved what the original brought to the table without overhauling what was previously established, being set in a different continuity. It improved vastly since it's early start.

I was born in 2001, was raised on the movies but only really seen a handful of episodes. The newer episodes never really caught my attention, so I ending up not caring much about Rugrats until much later when the show was no longer airing. All Grown Up! On the other hand, I ate up. I’ve been binge watching both shows for over a month now… Gosh, lotta work 🥲 I do like Dill and Kimi and their dynamics they add, and personally I feel like the show started to truly become stale just some episodes after Dill. All Growed Up was a pleasant end game for me though. Probably should’ve had that as it’s final conclusion so it could have been a smooth transition into the spin off. This was a great video and look through all of the media!!

That was a great way to put it. “Phil and Lil get changed into super big rubbery diapers.” There’s so many way to interpret it. Definitely a weird storyline but considering they don’t really have a lot of character development anyway I guess it gave them something to do. Kind of a shame they became more redundant from the series of the show from that point.

Being a millennial who grew up with Rugrats in the 90's, I think I was pretty blind to its decline as I was a kid who was sooo obsesed with the show. I remember enjoying all three movies, especially the first and second, but I vividly remember hating Dill lmfao. I do remember how weird the episodes post Rugrats In Paris felt though, it was like they weren't real? Like some kind of fever dream because none were memorable. I did like the All Growed Up special! I remember begging my parents that we had to be home to watch the premiere lol. It was kinda weird how Rugrats just faded into obscurity and fizzled out of my childhood, and it makes sense now seeing this as an adult.

I also find that a lot of shows peak in season 3, CN especially falls under that.
My most fond memories with Rugrats are i the movies and honestly I'll love the first one. The heavy drama works for me as as well Dill, minus the poopy jokes. If I saw it for the first time as an adult I'd take more issues with some of the odd choices, but through nostalgia goggles I just accept them as part of the charm. And getting past that there's a lot of heart and charm here.
But the sequel is way better, much tighter with a more consistent tone. I always assumed Dill doesn't talk because A. that World is something to me new song isn't canon and B. He's...uh, maybe special? All Grown Up really runs with that idea,.

I was thinking this the other day after watching it myself. I was born in ‘94, so I feel you. So, from what I can remember, the Pilot WAS aired on Nick, at some point, likely in the early 2000’s.
There were lots of weird filler slots that Nick used every now and then, like with The Splat. I mean, I know that animation of SpongeBob walking down the street for like 5 minutes was aired at some point, as some sort of joke filler.
I want to say that maybe the channel NickToons also ran the Pilot during commercials breaks, because I remember when I was a kid, they had entire commercial segments that were shorts, segments from other cartoons like music videos, etc.
I mean, I have a VHS of when I recorded the Invader Zim Halloween special, when it first aired, and it has all the old Astrology with Squidward shorts that aired between commercials.
You’re not alone in your weird recollection, ha, trust me. :)

@@AJPierson Me too. At least Poof was more tolerable and didn't ruin the show. If anything, it was the writing and the direction FOP took. It got more loud and hyper, more in your face, and it also got repetitive in terms of plot and comedy. The stories got more poorly written and repetitive, with bad continuity errors, repeating the same running gag and shoving it down your throat making it the main focus for jokes, and don't ever get me started on how repetitively meanspirited it got. Seeing Timmy Turner getting tortured and harmed by not just Vicky, his parents, and everyone in school, but from everybody around him including his loved ones not only got stale but it also got more meanspirited than what it was as if the world is out to attack Timmy Turner for no reason like he's what you call an abuse victim. It's like he became a writers' favorite punching bag (like Meg Griffin from Family Guy). And the addition of new characters like Foop, Sparky, and Chloe are just the salt on a really bad wound, thanks to excecutive meddling from Nickelodeon.

That's not true, and even Paul would dispute that. It was Arlene's idea, and she and Gabor helped come up with the basic ocncept,, but it was Paul that fleshed out the idea beyond "show about babies", created a majority of the characters, and ran the series for it's first three seasons. It was Paul's vision, but Arlene and Gabor did help come up with the initial idea.
I'd say Paul gets much more credit for the show now than he did in the 90s, and even the 2000s. It's also worth noting that after the reboot was ordered, Arlene and Paul actually patched things up, and are on a much more friendly basis than they were. (Paul even goes over this in a "Look Back Machine" interview) As a result, some of the writers from Paul's reign are involved with the reboot, like Rachel Lipman, who's co-producer and second in command to Kate Boutilier.

@@user-rl4jn2je1l I did not contest any of the points you raised. The inception of the concept for a baby-centric show originated from Arlene, who proposed the idea and enlisted Paul to elaborate on it. Paul, recollecting an observation he made about his younger brother one evening, posited that babies might possess more intelligence than apparent, leading to the concept of a show where infants appear oblivious to adults but engage in conversation once left alone.
Beyond the initial idea generation, Paul expanded the concept, moving beyond a simple "show about babies." Arlene and Gabor collaborated with Peter Chung to shape the show's artistic style, and, consistent with their involvement in previous projects, managed the production of Rugrats. But Paul Germain served as the visionary force behind the show, holding positions such as head writer, voice director, and showrunner. Arlene acknowledged in a 2020 interview that she lacked the bandwidth to oversee her shows fully, attributing due credit to Paul for his significant role.
