100% agreed. I honestly think that’s the funniest moment in the series. As someone who’s watched a shit ton of SpongeBob in my life, that moment is one of the 3-5 moments in the show that can still make me laugh out loud

i kid you not, i genuinely thought that Idiot Box had ACTUAL IMAGINATION SCENES up until i rewatched it a few years ago. i was mindblown when i realized it was actually just my imagination. it's crazy how great our imaginations were as kids. i'm not saying it's any worse now that i'm older, my imagination still runs wild to this day, but man i couldn't believe that was just all in my head

The funny thing is, I knew every single one of these episodes, but couldn’t tell you a title of any of them. I just never paid attention to that as a kid. I loved every story, and the adventures I went on with all of my underwater friends in Bikini Bottom.
This video legitimately made me cry, because I can remember SpongeBob being there for me through so many things I went through as a kid. There are some episodes that, while not being written so well, made me laugh over and over again, no matter how bad I felt inside.

THIS is only one example from millions for why SpongeBob was so pivotal for me as a kid. Genuine life advice snuck into a humorous kids show. Not to mention I learned how to tie my shoes from that one SpongeBob episode.

I’m sorry but Krusty Towers is an honorary golden episode. Literally every single line is iconic and it’s just absurd joke after joke after joke, it never slows down. One of my absolute favorites. IMDB also seems to agree as it’s the highest rated of season 4 and higher rated than even many Season 1-3 episodes. “We shall never deny a guest, even the most ridiculous request!”, “This is a hotel??”

Whatever other people say, holy shit dude, the whole video is an absolute masterpiece. Sure, some ranks in the lower tiers may have been interchangeable, yet the leading episodes of each tier (including SS) depict a real understanding of what makes the whole series (season 1-3 lol) such a memorable masterpiece to this day. With nostalgia in mind, sure, those earlier episodes stick way deeper in out memories than that soulless crap modern Spongebob is, but with so many episodes representing and explaining current topics such as strikes, existentialism and human interaction in manifold it really shows how it is something more than just silly jokes.
Thank you a lot for the time and effort that went into creating this list!

Sb-129 is my all time favorite episode of all time. About damn time it gets some love. I am a huge sucker for reality bending and breaking episodes. Its fantastic. This and ed edd and eddy. I love episodes that just randomly go into that realm of WHAT?!

I wish you went into the Idiot Box episode more, the imagination scenes are SO iconic. Spongebob and Patrick dramaticizing a desperate escape from an avalanche that parodies a war movie because Squidward kicked the box is SO harrowing to watch as an adult and the jokes hit so well with its concept.
"Mrs. Puff You're Fired" is one of my favourite episodes, and by far my favourite from Season 4. So I'm very surprised to see it in F tier. Am I alone?

It does suffer from slightly weird pacing and comedic timing like all of season 4 but if you look past that, the gags in the episode are nonstop gold. And the episode itself is B2B Krusty towers, which makes it the shining beacon of S4.

i think your breakdown and reasoning for each tier is excellent and revisiting the original list from the 2000s is an awesome idea. as others in the comments have suggested, you can debate placements of your favorite episodes and moments amongst yourselves, but the overall curation and quality of the video is amazing! i love the style of OG spongebob tier list/video essay’s and this is up there with the best. great work man.

Crazy how Squidward dominates the top 10, proving he is the best character to interact emotionally, plot-wise, psychologically, socially, comically with SpongeBob in the entire show
Man I gotta say as a fan of the show and as someone who’s watched a lot of top ten lists on epsiodes, seeing you pick genuine choices and not just going with obvious fan favourites was so satisfying. Seeing pickles at the top was so cathartic haha. Finally someone who loves that episode as much as I do! Dunno if it’s the number 1 for me but top 3 for sure.

Wow just stumbled upon this video and watched the whole thing and loved it! Obviously, i would make a few changes in my own personal ranking, but I really loved your picks! One thing this video made me realize is how few seasons are the golden era. I just looked it up and realized as i kid i gave up on spongebob after season 6, but when i was a kid, there were so many classics i had always assumed there were over like 10 seasons at the point because the show was so good. But after watching your video, it made me realize that like 95% of the episodes that i consider good is just the entirety of the first 3 seasons and then there was a huge drop in quality and as a kid i just didnt realize that all these classics were just 3 seasons. Still to this day, my favorite show from when i was a kid.
One of if not the gratest tier of Sponge Bob episodes I've seen in a while. That was a blast to watch. I laughed so hard at all the gags you cherrypicked from episodes.

as someone who was 7 when Help Wanted was first released, and who has seen every episode of the first 5 seasons, your top ten is absolute perfection!

I know it's an easy argument to make that any kid from any era feels the same way as any other kid from any other era about their respective favorite childhood shows. And maybe there's a good amount of truth to that, but I don't think that means that shows don't vary in quality. And I'm biased because I was born in 1998, and still quote Spongebob in daily life to friends who also remember it as fondly, but I've also seen a lot of television and I don't think that it's very common whatsoever for a show aimed at an audience for children is so well written, acted, animated, has such great music, memorability and constant bar raising creativity. The show always demanded respect by respecting its viewers. It can be hard to be grateful for things in a mind that constantly resets itself in the present, assessing for threats and anxieties and "is that person looking at me?" But it's nice to be able to step back and appreciate how lucky we were to be at the right time and place and age to see this masterpiece of a show.

I may update this comment as the video goes on to include other blunders such as SKILL CRANE BEING OUTSIDE THE TOP 100!? WHAT!? Skill Crane is Top 50. C'mon! 55:32 Not to mention it has three endings.. but the only cons to those endings is the fact that two of them end the same way with the Flying Dutchman eating them. SpongeBob's won with them turned into fruit in a blender and chased by the Flying Dutchman as a vegetarian, as SpongeBob wished for in his ending.
Starting at like #100 I went "Man, this is THAT low?" just to then go "oh yeah fair that episode's ALSO great". Golden Era Spongebob is one of the best cartoons ever made.

The fact that Artist Unknown is a perfect demonstration of the dichotomy between the Apollonian (Squidward) and Dionysian (Spongebob) psychologies of art
I really loved your list for the top 100 of these episodes! Seeing a #1 that WASN'T Band Geeks (though that episode is still spectacular) and was instead an episode I also really love and enjoy was a nice change of pace, and I liked how short and sweet some of the reviews were, while the more in-depth and deeper episodes were really analyzed in detail. The only episode I really rank a lot higher from Season 4 is "Have You Seen This Snail?," but that's mainly because it made me cry when I was a kid. The song in that episode hits hard.

While Plankton is the most prevalent villain, I totally agree that Bubble Bass is arguably the best and most underrated of Spongebob villains, even more evil than Plankton. Why? Because he was he one of the few antagonists to almost singlehandedly cause the Krusty Krab to go bankrupt. He psychologically wrecked Sponge so bad that it forced Squidward to be the new fry cook. But his food was terrible and caused the customers to leave. Had this continued, Mr. Krabs would have went out of business for good, all because of ONE lie. Sure Krabs could've hired someone else, but who else could match Spongebob's fry cook skills AND work for cheap?
Even besides that, Bubble Bass is a rare character that really tests Spongebob's fortitude. Him being a lazy, bossy, spiteful, overly-pedantic, and dishonest person in sharp contrast to Spongebob's hard working, easygoing, friendly, accepting, and honest personality. Nowadays, Bubble Bass is just a harmless neckbeard that lives in his mom's basement and is completely useless. But I'll always prefer Season 1 Bubble Bass as a really effective antagonist.
The Paper is one of my all time favorites and so is Jellyfish Hunter, super happy to see that one in top 20 always thought it was an underrated gem from season 2 that doesn't get brought up much outside of Moar Krabs

Something you did with this list that I never would’ve thought of personally but I’m really glad you did it putting them into categories. Like episodes were Squidward starts out as a grumpy fuddy-duddy denying SpongeBob, who is trying to get Squidward to do something playful, but by the end of the episode, Squidward has an imagination and becomes playful. Or episodes were plankton, tries to steal the crabby patty or mermaid, man and Barnacle, boy episodes, etc. but one thing as I wish you would’ve added more non-character related categories like best ending. The funniest moments of SpongeBob to me, as an adult, and as a kid, or the very, very end of some episodes. For example, it’s probably the hardest I’ve ever laughed at a SpongeBob was at the end of Fry when Patrick says that his underwear were white when he bought them insinuating that he pissed his pants. I was in tears as a kid when I first heard that.
Edit: also the ending to the snowball fight episode. When Squidward is having a mental breakdown and starts going crazy and decides to build a snowball/wall around his house and it’s like 1000 feet tall. I remember as a kid when I first saw this, I was dying, just a visual how tall and how we just started going insane with snowballs against Patrick and SpongeBob, and even Patrick and SpongeBob realize that Squidward was going a little bit crazy.
Orwin Flats was going to kick SpongeBob’s butt. The ending when Mrs. puff says that she’s going to kick SpongeBob’s butt. There’s so many episodes with just iconic as fuck endings.
I didn't realize how many "new" SpongeBob episodes that I like are just season 4.

Straight up, my confession is that I'm not the biggest fan of Ripped Pants. Pickles is definitely number 1 for me, too.
I remember thinking the “He’s naked” scene from the algae’s always greener episode was the funniest thing ever as a kid.
Very solid list. My only gripe is the low rank of Jelly fishing, especially because you followed it with April Fools and Krabs V Plankton. Both of which I think it outclasses.

while it's easy to point out disagreements with the list (my favorite episode is ranked 94th, and the one immediately below it is another one of my absolute favorites), this show was just so consistent in its quality that i really can't take issue with any of the list, because the majority of the season 1-3 episodes are so close together in quality so what you're left with is even more subjective than the usual tier list video. i'm so glad this show was such a big part of growing up for so much of our generation, the shared experience of watching these episodes and remembering the best parts all these years later is just so strong and really makes me feel closer in some strange way to people i've never met.

As a kid I would’ve said Band Geeks at #1, and I think Pickles is a great choice. But mine has to be Pizza Delivery. The jokes are funny, the pacing is perfect, but what gets me is SpongeBob’s defeat from the customer not being satisfied because of a request he didn’t originally place. I’ve worked in so many facets of customer service and the feeling of failing or that you’re not doing enough - even after going through hell and back to assist someone - is gut wrenching. I watched this recently and I honestly cried with SpongeBob because I know how he feels and I know how hard him and Squidward worked to get there. It’s a wonderful episode with an amazing pay off - Squidward supporting SpongeBob and being a genuine friend > coworker.
spongebob during this era specifically is quite literally the best cartoon ever made. the cultural significance of each of these episodes is crazy. like you have to be literate is sponge-ology in order to be literate in the comedic landscape of the 21st century
You should do the next 100 as well. Or the entire series of you get ambitious enough, excellent video. I subscribed.

Great video. Loved watching from the beginning to the end. I disagree with a few picks but overall really good ranking. You put a lot of thought into this video and it shows.
Now i am thinking it would be kinda cool to do a top 100 ranking of the "not og Episodes" from the beginning of Season 5 onward. It´s no secret that many of the newer episodes are overall not that great but i think there are quite a few gems in there that people are overlooking and forgetting about because of the general opinion that anything from season 5 onwards sucks.

I initially agreed with your top 10, but thinking about it more, I think I'd somehow have to change 3 of them (brutally difficult to do) to include Jellyfish Jam, Mid Life Crustacean, and the Christmas Episode. Jellyfish Jam is just so much fun to watch, both the songs are bangers. Mid Life Crustacean cause they somehow got away with doing a panty raid, it's fun seeing if Mr Krabs can really feel it now, and the best YTP came from this episode. The Christmas Episode is just really special to me, I always got excited to see it when December rolled around as a kid, it's so enjoyable even to this day (hell I even wanted to watch it when I was still together with my ex this past Christmas), it still brings back lots of great memories I have from all those years ago.
