I’m here to file my grievance. Shanghai’d is legitimately one of the funniest pieces of media ever created and should be much, much higher on this list.
Shanghied is still my favorite Spongebob episode. There are so many good jokes and underrated lines in it. One of my favorite lines in the show is from this episode. It’s when the Dutchman tells SpongeBob and Patrick that he’s going to eat them. They scream then Patrick says “wait, I have an idea”, SpongeBob says “what is it Patrick!?” and he responds with “let’s leave”. It doesn’t really seem that funny when I explain it, but it makes me crack up every time I watch the episode.
For me it was that at "D" and snowball effect at "C". Imo two of the best & most quotable episodes besides Club Spongebob. Then again I also respect most other picks of the video
@@urfavvvcoraline I know. SpongeBob is so good. I still watch it from time to time. Even after the true glory days there are still iconic moments like handsome squidward.
@@fruitpun6h Agreed! Not only is it a really fun episode, but it also genuinely has one of my personal favorite jokes in the series: Mr. Krabs: *freaks out about the hospital bill* Squidward: You're not gonna have a heart attack, are you? Mr. Krabs: Not at THESE prices!
Made me cry how the fact that the two best episodes of this childrens show is the community rallying behind the two most important characters right when their wills are finally broken, both feeling like their purpose in life had been failed, until the people come together and let them know "Hey regardless of how much you annoy us, we respect and value you as one of our own and we want you to succeed".
I’m sorry but Krusty Towers is an honorary golden episode. Literally every single line is iconic and it’s just absurd joke after joke after joke, it never slows down. One of my absolute favorites. IMDB also seems to agree as it’s the highest rated of season 4 and higher rated than even many Season 1-3 episodes. “We shall never deny a guest, even the most ridiculous request!”, “This is a hotel??”
I never watched the Christmas episode on TV. I had to watch it online out of curiosity because it was the only OG Spongebob episode I had never watched
I was born in the late 90s and grew up watching SpongeBob. It's such a strange feeling to see an old episode of SpongeBob that I never knew existed until now.
Because the comedy comes from it being a small amount too, due to inflation the joke just gets funnier and funnier over time. A shame jokes about comically large amounts of money get less funny over time.
@@jessehammer123 exactly, what makes it even more hilarious is the fact that Krabs didn't even KNOW how much there was in the Flying Dutchman's pockets. Meaning it could've been 10 dollars, 2 cents. Or just 62 cents lmao

@@pangobara8182 yea, went back and rewatched, but him asking "how much we talking" implies that basically ANY sum would've been enough for him...what I believe is the most hilarious part is that Spongebob returned after thirty seconds because of how fucking annoying he was to the FD LMAOOO
Never thought of Pickles like that, but now thinking about it that way and looking back at it, it’s a phenomenal episode, especially considering it was season one
Man, seeing pickles as #1 initially had me thinking you had a slight bias, since i had Band Geeks as #1. But as you were explainjng how significant it is to see SB redeem his identity really did bring a tear to my eye. You're absolutely right.
This is the first time that I thought about every single golden age Spongebob episode in such detail, and it made me realize how much the show influenced my values growing up. I'm convinced that I'm a better, more rounded person because of it. All thanks to Stephen Hillenburg and his little show. Rest in peace, Stephen.
The fact I haven’t seen some of those episodes in decades and I still remember them so vividly when you bring them up goes to show how amazing this show was early on
It is amazing, but so are all the top 5s. They are all amazing. I do agree that Pickle should be nr 1, but I do understand why anybody would take any of the top 5 and put them as their number 1. :-D
"maybe you can get away with it the first few years of airing it to kids, they'll just laugh about it, but when those kids grow up and make a TH-cam video tier listing your episodes 20 years later, this one will be in F tier." These are the things that keep me up at night.
I wish you went into the Idiot Box episode more, the imagination scenes are SO iconic. Spongebob and Patrick dramaticizing a desperate escape from an avalanche that parodies a war movie because Squidward kicked the box is SO harrowing to watch as an adult and the jokes hit so well with its concept.
“You're going to have to cut them off with a saw! No, Patrick, I can't do that! Why not? Because I already cut off my own arms.” Like how was this a kids show? 😂
Hash Slinging Slasher being their way of saying he's a drug dealing murderer to get the adult joke past censors is probably the best instance of an adult joke in any kids cartoon ever
There were some weird rankings I won’t lie. Squidward the unfriendly ghost for example being way to low imo. But having pickles as number 1 might be one of the most based opinions on the internet. I had such an emotional connection to this episode and I’m glad you see it too.
This i've seen. This was like now the tenth ranking kf the golden era episodes where apparently i'm the only guy to enjoy all 3 s3 specials(all 22 min)
My personal SS tier: 1- SB-129 2- Band Geeks 3- Graveyard Shift 4- Chocolate with Nuts 5- KK Training Video 6- Wet Painters 7- Rock Bottom 8- Mermaidman and Barnacle Boy V 9- Christmas Who? 10- Club Spongebob This was a lot harder than I thought
Amazing; thank you for giving me a new appreciation for these episodes on such a deeper level. I never thought I’d hear such an analysis of Pickles of all episodes; well done.
Whatever other people say, holy shit dude, the whole video is an absolute masterpiece. Sure, some ranks in the lower tiers may have been interchangeable, yet the leading episodes of each tier (including SS) depict a real understanding of what makes the whole series (season 1-3 lol) such a memorable masterpiece to this day. With nostalgia in mind, sure, those earlier episodes stick way deeper in out memories than that soulless crap modern Spongebob is, but with so many episodes representing and explaining current topics such as strikes, existentialism and human interaction in manifold it really shows how it is something more than just silly jokes. Thank you a lot for the time and effort that went into creating this list!
I’m glad you addressed karate island because I remember riding hard for that episode and then rewatching it present day and it has NO substance or anything clever like at least frycook games had funny and relevant events
Yeah Karate Island is basically Og dragon ball Muscle tower but without any of the funny jokes. We even have a chubby fish that is exactly like the monster Goku fights
“Having pride in your work is nothing to be ashamed of, it’s the only thing that makes it all worthwhile” THIS is only one example from millions for why SpongeBob was so pivotal for me as a kid. Genuine life advice snuck into a humorous kids show. Not to mention I learned how to tie my shoes from that one SpongeBob episode.
55:32 Not to mention it has three endings.. but the only cons to those endings is the fact that two of them end the same way with the Flying Dutchman eating them. SpongeBob's won with them turned into fruit in a blender and chased by the Flying Dutchman as a vegetarian, as SpongeBob wished for in his ending.
That was an awesome video At first, I was like "a long video about a stupid cartoon. Perfect background noise." But I genuinely started getting invested. Even though I didn't grow up watching SpongeBob (my parents didn't let me), you brought out what little memories I did have. The simple joys. The memorable bits. Thank you for making this
S4 and S5 slept on ngl. People still say they’re good but I feel like it’s more out of obligation than anything. Squidward in Clarinetland is honestly one of my favs
i think your breakdown and reasoning for each tier is excellent and revisiting the original list from the 2000s is an awesome idea. as others in the comments have suggested, you can debate placements of your favorite episodes and moments amongst yourselves, but the overall curation and quality of the video is amazing! i love the style of OG spongebob tier list/video essay’s and this is up there with the best. great work man.
There were a few placements I wasn't expecting, but your reasoning for all of them was very good. You honestly made me love Pickles as an episode way more by painting it in the light of an identity crisis and eventual redemption arc. Great video and great list!
The amount of top tier episodes i never got to see as a kid is criminal, ESPECIALLY sandys rocket and pizza delivery, im tempted to rewatch spongebob now just to relive the nostalgia but also finally get to see these gems
It’s actually so accurate, season 4 is such a departure from the 1st 3 and the show never came back. I would have left season 4 off entirely if it wasn’t considered OG. It’s so bad compared to some of greatest cartoon television of all time.

Whoah, you too mentioned Ed Edd and Eddy here! I just posted my two cents in a comment here mentioning how I have never laughed so hard to a cartoon as I did watching The Strangler episode. Except for when I was 4 years old and watched a specific Ed Edd and Eddy episode where they built a dangerous roller coaster and rode it almost flying. I was so filled with excitement and thought it was hilarious! I have never seen either that scene or that episode since I was 4, and I'm 26 now. And I still remember that scene vividly. Thank you for your comment and thank you for reading and I wish you a great day!
Crazy how Squidward dominates the top 10, proving he is the best character to interact emotionally, plot-wise, psychologically, socially, comically with SpongeBob in the entire show
This video gave me a new appreciation for spongebob, thank you I need to get whatever streaming service it's on.. i remember growing out of the show, but I'd guess that what actually happened was the episodes just became more annoying as the seasons went on. This video also made me remember so many episodes and scenes i forgot about! And just how much spongebob has affected us and how we unknowingly quote it all the time. It's like one of those things that can connect any two people (with limitations, obviously depends on the age group) Also, i gotta watch the spongebob movie again. I remember enjoying it SO much as a kid
respect all these takes but i actually really liked the episode where they all turn into snails, its like uncharacteristically fucked up body horror for early spongebob and reminds me of 90s nickelodeon cartoons like ahh real monsters
While Plankton is the most prevalent villain, I totally agree that Bubble Bass is arguably the best and most underrated of Spongebob villains, even more evil than Plankton. Why? Because he was he one of the few antagonists to almost singlehandedly cause the Krusty Krab to go bankrupt. He psychologically wrecked Sponge so bad that it forced Squidward to be the new fry cook. But his food was terrible and caused the customers to leave. Had this continued, Mr. Krabs would have went out of business for good, all because of ONE lie. Sure Krabs could've hired someone else, but who else could match Spongebob's fry cook skills AND work for cheap? Even besides that, Bubble Bass is a rare character that really tests Spongebob's fortitude. Him being a lazy, bossy, spiteful, overly-pedantic, and dishonest person in sharp contrast to Spongebob's hard working, easygoing, friendly, accepting, and honest personality. Nowadays, Bubble Bass is just a harmless neckbeard that lives in his mom's basement and is completely useless. But I'll always prefer Season 1 Bubble Bass as a really effective antagonist.
Man I gotta say as a fan of the show and as someone who’s watched a lot of top ten lists on epsiodes, seeing you pick genuine choices and not just going with obvious fan favourites was so satisfying. Seeing pickles at the top was so cathartic haha. Finally someone who loves that episode as much as I do! Dunno if it’s the number 1 for me but top 3 for sure.
Personally, my absolute FAVORITE episode is Shanghaied. Literally SO MANY quotes from that episode, and you laugh like every 5 seconds Goated episode and the fact that it didn't make the original Top 100 list is absolutely digusting
I feel that same way about Suds. I know intellectually that it’s a good episode, but every part of it has always made me extremely uncomfortable. I don’t think I have a single good memory involving it
I know it's an easy argument to make that any kid from any era feels the same way as any other kid from any other era about their respective favorite childhood shows. And maybe there's a good amount of truth to that, but I don't think that means that shows don't vary in quality. And I'm biased because I was born in 1998, and still quote Spongebob in daily life to friends who also remember it as fondly, but I've also seen a lot of television and I don't think that it's very common whatsoever for a show aimed at an audience for children is so well written, acted, animated, has such great music, memorability and constant bar raising creativity. The show always demanded respect by respecting its viewers. It can be hard to be grateful for things in a mind that constantly resets itself in the present, assessing for threats and anxieties and "is that person looking at me?" But it's nice to be able to step back and appreciate how lucky we were to be at the right time and place and age to see this masterpiece of a show. Also, incredibly well made and satisfying video. I can tell how much time this took you to make and it's inspiring how committed you must have been. I may update this comment as the video goes on to include other blunders such as SKILL CRANE BEING OUTSIDE THE TOP 100!? WHAT!? Skill Crane is Top 50. C'mon! But the passion I feel for disagreeing with you is the same passion you felt that drove you to correct that abhorrent and distasteful list that was somehow voted on.

Wow just stumbled upon this video and watched the whole thing and loved it! Obviously, i would make a few changes in my own personal ranking, but I really loved your picks! One thing this video made me realize is how few seasons are the golden era. GRIEVANCES?! THIS WHOLE TOWN IS A GREIVANCE
@@Magnemite_ I literally quote this scene when I actually wanna leave
You KNOW the comedy of A-tier and onward Spongebob is on point when even clips where he's talking over them still bring tears to your eyes.

You’re good! You’re good! You’re good!
But the door is locked! And the only way out is through the…perfume department!
Yeah, also definitely bare minimum in my top ten, very likely top five. What an episode.
No Weenies Allowed at 115 made my jaw drop. Good list though.
Yeah, that one I definitely didn't agree with, lol.
Nails without milk is a joke that is better than whole episodes of other shows.
Yeah that episode is easily top 25 if not 50 at least on any real fans list I think
dude yeah that episode is easily in my top 20
For me it was that at "D" and snowball effect at "C". Imo two of the best & most quotable episodes besides Club Spongebob. Then again I also respect most other picks of the video
Thr craziest part of all, is how they managed to create many memorable moments in 11 minute episodes. TIME. AFTER. TIME. AGAIN.
Ikr! The one that makes me feel like this the most is Clams. It's insane to me how they fit so many different moments in the plot in just 11 minutes.

Ghost Host above Krusty Towers is kinda wild
eh theyre not that far from each other
Krusty towers is way too low anyways
@@fruitpun6h Agreed! Not only is it a really fun episode, but it also genuinely has one of my personal favorite jokes in the series:
Mr. Krabs: *freaks out about the hospital bill*
Squidward: You're not gonna have a heart attack, are you?
Mr. Krabs: Not at THESE prices!
Made me cry how the fact that the two best episodes of this childrens show is the community rallying behind the two most important characters right when their wills are finally broken, both feeling like their purpose in life had been failed, until the people come together and let them know "Hey regardless of how much you annoy us, we respect and value you as one of our own and we want you to succeed".
the piano jokes in fear of a krabby patty are hilarious to me for no reason at all
The CH Greenblatt effect
I’m sorry but Krusty Towers is an honorary golden episode. Literally every single line is iconic and it’s just absurd joke after joke after joke, it never slows down. One of my absolute favorites. IMDB also seems to agree as it’s the highest rated of season 4 and higher rated than even many Season 1-3 episodes. “We shall never deny a guest, even the most ridiculous request!”, “This is a hotel??”

Two things I still say to this day! "We have technology" and "He's just standing there, MENACINGLY!!!"
Mr Krabs selling SpongeBobs soul for not even a dollar will forever be the funniest thing in all of media for me
Because the comedy comes from it being a small amount too, due to inflation the joke just gets funnier and funnier over time.
@UnohanaMash He did know how much. He asks how much before he agrees.

@@pangobara8182 yea, went back and rewatched, but him asking "how much we talking" implies that basically ANY sum would've been enough for him...what I believe is the most hilarious part is that Spongebob returned after thirty seconds because of how fucking annoying he was to the FD LMAOOO
You know a show is good when we're describing episodes as "bulletproof" and we're not even in the top 50 yet
Fuck i shouldn't look at comments before finishing the video.
dude i felt the same way. I forgot about pickles tbh and i was like "what could be above band geeks" and then as he explained it i cried a little.
Its an opinion video bro, the entire list is biased
I felt the same, I was like "seriously, that one?" but after his explanation and the refresher, I understand it now
I had chocolate with nuts at one off good memories tbh
This is the first time that I thought about every single golden age Spongebob episode in such detail, and it made me realize how much the show influenced my values growing up. I'm convinced that I'm a better, more rounded person because of it. All thanks to Stephen Hillenburg and his little show. Rest in peace, Stephen.
The fact I haven’t seen some of those episodes in decades and I still remember them so vividly when you bring them up goes to show how amazing this show was early on
Dying for Pie is still number 1 in my heart. Every joke lands and it is the best-written episode in the whole series.
It is amazing, but so are all the top 5s. They are all amazing. I do agree that Pickle should be nr 1, but I do understand why anybody would take any of the top 5 and put them as their number 1. :-D

"maybe you can get away with it the first few years of airing it to kids, they'll just laugh about it, but when those kids grow up and make a TH-cam video tier listing your episodes 20 years later, this one will be in F tier."
These are the things that keep me up at night.
The "my leg!" scream as the SpongeBob universe's Wilhelm scream will never get old.

1- SB-129
2- Band Geeks
3- Graveyard Shift
4- Chocolate with Nuts
5- KK Training Video
6- Wet Painters
7- Rock Bottom
8- Mermaidman and Barnacle Boy V
9- Christmas Who?
10- Club Spongebob
This was a lot harder than I thought
I think I agree with you. SB-129 and Band Geeks touched me emotionally far more than a funny cartoon has any right to.
god the KK Training video is so good
I personally loved Can You Spare a Dime and No Weenies Allowed too.
I loved just one bite and squidvile and also grandmas kisses
I would switch training video and wet painters with #1 hat and Sandy homesick.10 with SB house party.
Can’t believe we’re gonna talk about the pre-hibernation episode and NOT mention how Pantera did the music and how iconic that is
Flats' dad's delivery of "Great! Now he's gonna kick _my_ butt!" is a line that lives rent-free in my head.

@@BackupChannel-nq6fgYeah i remember playing so many of those spongebob flash games as a kid
Yeah Karate Island is basically Og dragon ball Muscle tower but without any of the funny jokes. We even have a chubby fish that is exactly like the monster Goku fights
I have respect for it, since the karate master was literally voiced by none other than Pat Morita himself before he passed.
“Having pride in your work is nothing to be ashamed of, it’s the only thing that makes it all worthwhile”
THIS is only one example from millions for why SpongeBob was so pivotal for me as a kid. Genuine life advice snuck into a humorous kids show. Not to mention I learned how to tie my shoes from that one SpongeBob episode.
Remember; licking doorknobs is illegal on other planets
55:32 Not to mention it has three endings.. but the only cons to those endings is the fact that two of them end the same way with the Flying Dutchman eating them. SpongeBob's won with them turned into fruit in a blender and chased by the Flying Dutchman as a vegetarian, as SpongeBob wished for in his ending.
Personally I think ranking SpongeBob episodes is insane. I could sit through all 142 of these and enjoy every single second of it
That was an awesome video
At first, I was like "a long video about a stupid cartoon. Perfect background noise."
But I genuinely started getting invested.

You absolutely should. There’s no age limit.
I really had to temper my feelings for this list, because I was saying “I really liked that episode” to half of the “F tier” episodes. 😂

Graveyard Shift in B Tier is an actual tragedy, that's a top 5 Episode
The whole bit @ 33:00-33:24 is FIRE social commentary on how schools tend to not be very good at bullying prevention

Its crazy that I remember every one of these episodes more than 10 years later. Great ranking !
Bro in scaredy pants when squidward say “ I’ve came for your pickle” I Don’t blame SpongeBob for jumping like that I would be scared too
I wonder if they were being meta with it and referring to "Pickles"? Since that came after. That would be amazing

As someone who viscerally despised the Karate Island episode as a kid for reasons I couldn’t explain, this tier list healed a small part of my soul.
I feel that same way about Suds. I know intellectually that it’s a good episode, but every part of it has always made me extremely uncomfortable. I don’t think I have a single good memory involving it
The time share joke as an adult propels it a lot. Fucking hilarious to me
@peanutbutter6720 so we all had an episode we absolutely despised as a kid for no reason? It was Spongehenge for me lol
