I'm a dentist who sang in a classical choir for five years and I'll try to explain the way his different anatomy (namely the overbite) could have possibly helped in his wide range/big sound. The middle part of the face is like a large echo chamber made of hollowed out bones called sinuses. The roof of the mouth is simultaneously the floor of those sinuses, and having an overbite significantly increases the area of those sinuses resulting in a larger echo chamber for the voice to resonate. Of course a strongly controlled vocal "instrument" is key, but I suppose this came with years and years of personal training, otherwise he would have simply been an amplified sheep (as Roger Taylor, drummer of Queen, once humorously called early Freddie vocals). Another facet is his somewhat square, strong jaw, which could also aid in getting his vowels right by allowing the tongue out of the way from the back of his throat to the floor of his spacious mouth. Something else you talked about was his use of his upper lip to control the "color" of his voice, which is actually the result of years of trying to cover his teeth and so increasing the tone of his lip muscles (mainly the orbicularis oris), it's normal that with age these muscles sag, but with constant use, they become more under control. If you watched early vs. late interviews with Freddie, you'll notice how he's constantly smacking them to keep his teeth in check, which is something we notice in kids with overbites all the time. @@SamJohnsonVoice I would say people with an underdeveloped lower jaw (micrognathia) would have their tounge crammed between their lower teeth, resulting in a distinctly nasal sounding voice. An abnormally large tongue (macroglossia) could cause the same problem while singing, as well.

I think you nailed it when you said Freddy had supreme confidence in his voice. He didn’t care what his voice was doing during the show, he was singing with passion and emotion, connecting with the audience. He knew the sounds would come out right, so he could focus on conveying the emotion to his audience, which in turn engages them more.
When you watch the performance in context you see how everybody was winging it not sure how to do a concert with many performers and hoping to get financial aid. Then Queen walks in and commands the stadium. Not just the front rows of mega fans, but just the whole crowd; fans and non-fans. Astonishing control as you said.

Can go wrong, that could screw up an already damaged voice. Same with a cold, when you do sports, you can ruin your heart. There is a reason why the body wants rest and listening to your doctor is important.
You know what that dropped jaw, lip-covered teeth thing makes me think of? Indian vowels. I wonder how much of Freddie's sound came from the confluence of his native Parsi vowels, affecting London vowels, and affecting American vowels in imitation of Elvis (see Crazy Little Thing Called Love).
Freddie was without special voice training and was able to sing rock, blues, opera, etc. He has a divine talent to be and remain a musician of the century. He is a LEGEND.

And no doubt the disease did allready effect him( I base this purely on the fact that knowledge wasn't there at the time, let alone treatment for a longer and more painfree life} he was not very ill.

As a then 8 year old young lass in the uk watching Live Aid on tv it was one of the most memorable amazing moments of my life! No one has ever come close to Freddy or the band Queen.
Having performed for all my formative years, it was such a legit reaction. I'd have been like "Hoooly shit." But Freddie just doesn't even care. He's got it and he knows it.
I watch every single reaction to that Montreal video. And I always say "Hi Freddie" when he looks straight at the camera in the beginning. I know, I know, I'm ate up.
Most definitely, as a total performance Live aid was an amazing but Freddie’s voice had deteriorated a lot by this point which says a lot for just how good his voice was because this still sounds so good.
I just watched Bohemian Rhapsody in theaters and I had to go back and watch the Live Aid recording for real. Freddie was truly the best showman and performer. I love how he engages with the audience

Paperblossom, This show was phenomenal! And to hear later that Freddie preformed against the Dr.s wishes, and also against his own Original thoughts made this so iconic! Not even the band knew of his illnesses. Such an incredible person! The throat alone was huge. He originally said No to Live Aid. He thought it would indicate that he had aids publicly, before he was ready to say it. Luckily for the world, Freddie changed his mind.
LeiAnne SW Freddie did not knew he was Hiv positive before this show. De doctors told him in 1987, Live Aid was in 1985. The reason the were negative to perform during Live Aid had to do with Band Aid. They were not there during the recordings because of their world tour, wich took them to South Africa. South Africa was a no go, due to the apartheid. Queen was boycotted and a lot of negative attention about that. Besides that, Queen was not that comfortably about their World tour at that time, they felt they were not at their peak like they were on stage in the 75-82 periode. In 75-82 they were considered as one of the biggest and best bands on stage but they did not have that confidence during The Works tour. When Geldof said to the band and Freddie in particulair, this is the perfect stage, the whole world ‘ hello planet, it is me’ ...Freddie said okay let’s be part of it. The only problem before the show was his throat, wich had to suffer a lot due to the world tour and his lifestyle. But it has nothing to do with the aids thing back then. That is one of the things in the movie wich is completely wrong 😉
Not just passion and power... He put his entire heart and soul into everything he did on stage, and every time he opened his mouth to sing. That's a large part of why he was such a great singer.

That's great! I've been trying to learn Korean but I find it difficult to fit in my schedule. Also I am fluent in Dutch and English. And at school I learn German, these languages all have something in common. Korean is so different, it's challenging but I'm not giving up.
I'm a singer with quite an overbite like Freddie and I can say from personal experience that it is hard to thrust your jaw forward and much more comfortable to put it in a dropped position . So I agree with him if he really did avoid fixing the overbite due to worry about his sound changing. Great reaction, love Freddie Mercury's voice so much.
Same here, I have to really stretch my jaw muscles to get my bottom teeth to clear my top teeth, so when I sing my jaw is naturally dropped and never flexing, because it can't really go anywhere even if I tried.

sl brown No singer, especially one as well-known as Freddie, would risk permanent/long-term damage to their voice just for money. Like if something had happened Freddie wouldn’t have been able to sing live for months or more, which damages their career. I can also almost guarantee that singing live like that for a long time wouldve been exhausting and maybe even painful.

That overbite is crazy sexy. No joke ... overbites drive me bananas, and I've always thought him an incredibly handsome human being. Not to mention that changing his dentistry/ facial structure would've undoubtedly changed that beautiful sound.
Freddie might not have corrected his overbite for the same reason Barbra Streisand never had a nose job - concerned it would impact the quality of sound.
From a medical standpoint --- it's easier to fix an overbite than reconstruct an entire nose --- and also technically more complex to make the new nose look natural on the face --- Streisand was wise not to toy with Nature

God, I adore this concert and Freddie is just... incredible...! Thank you for doing him. I'd love to see your opinion of some of his last songs like "The Show Must Go On" and "These Are The Days Of Our Lives" - though obviously, those are going to be studio, not live recordings. Lovely analysis, Sam! Something I don't see much talked about is the perfection of Freddie's posture. Straight and taut buttocks (hey, those jeans hide nothing!) and yet so loose and agile. He used his whole body as an instrument. When I see him perform in these videos, it looks like he's a magnet sucking up energy from the crowd, magnifying it and then beaming it back out to them. You're so right: he was a magician.

This is probably the greatest single live song performance I’ve ever seen in my life. The whole set is legendary, and widely considered the greatest live show ever done, but this song was the anchor of it all. I got chills when I watched it live and still do to this day. Absolutely bonkers.
I think we are the champion here was the anchor to this set for me. I was eight watching it at home and my jaw dropped when he came on, he commanded the audience not just in the stadium but us at home, he owned us all at that moment. Legend.
I love how he sings this whole song..but when he sings "How music changes through the years" I get intense shivers down my spine..it's a wonderful feeling and I often wonder why this happens at that point in this performance.
I graduated in 1985, I remember watching this (not at Wembley, at home) and was crying like a baby. I was SO happy and in love with this performance! Queen IS one of my faves, but this performance transcended EVERYONE. If you didn't care for Queen you surely would be in love when you left. Amazing what 20-25 minutes will do. Completely changed the lives of many. Gave you hope, love, spirit, and the will to do all. Thank you Freddie and Queen, I'll never forget that moment. The people that saw this live? Man, you were SO lucky you witnessed a part of rock-n-roll history!!
holy shit your right! That jaw movement theory of yours, I never knew about that before and now I can't stop noticing it. Great, from now on I won't be able to not look at jaw movements during a live performance.
He had four extra molars in the back that pushed all of this other teeth around so yes...he was afraid that removing those and getting braces (at any age) would affect the tones he would/could get from the positioning of this tongue. I trust Freddie. IF he felt like it would change his tone too much, then it would because the anxiety alone would've made it destiny. Our bodies respond to our thoughts in a miriad of ways. He did what made him feel comfortable...as should we all.
Honestly I totally get the whole ‘not wanting to get work done one your mouth’ thing. Not exactly the same, but I learned how to play the flute in middle school (6th grade) with braces on. Then when I got them taken off in 8th grade, I basically had to re-learn how to play the flute because it was so different learning how to shape my mouth without the braces & how my teeth used to be. Interesting process. I ended up being very proficient the end years of high school in that instrument, but it was still an intense process of re-learning while my peers were already at a different stage in learning.

I've been hoping you would do a Queen reaction! You are correct - Freddie didn't want to have his teeth fixed because he felt that his 4 extra incisors are what made him sing so well. The funny thing is, his voice was not even up to par at this performance. By the time they get to We are the Champions, he's taking the lower notes and gets a little scratchy. If you really want to see how excellent his range really was, listen to Somebody to Love, then I'm Going Slightly Mad. He didn't just have the "Ay-yo" powerhouse vocals...their more toned down songs (Love of my Life, Slightly Mad, Those Were the Days of Our Lives) really show his range and how much control he had over his voice.
One of the best? No..He was and is THE BEST. Adam Lambert is an ok front man for Queen today, but even he knows he'll never fill the shoes of this man.
What makes Freddie such a vocal wonder is because when he sings he does not over analyze it. It just naturally flows from him. The entire band just enjoys the moment.
I've always thought Freddie was a baritone but sang as a tenor. But he had such great vocal control over his technique that you really couldn't tell. A lot of people said that he sang in the 4 octave range but I think this is what made him sound that way.
I was a teenager when he was in his glory. He is one of the best classical rock singer performers ever. His music is so original and Queen will always be a true classic rock star. 💜💜🎶🎵👍👍

As a then 8 year old young lass in the uk watching Live Aid on tv it was one of the most memorable amazing moments of my life!
No one has ever come close to Freddy or the band Queen.

Having performed for all my formative years, it was such a legit reaction. I'd have been like "Hoooly shit." But Freddie just doesn't even care. He's got it and he knows it.
Queen, the band where each member would have been a great singer on their own, but Freddy was in a class of his own and blew them all away.

Most definitely, as a total performance Live aid was an amazing but Freddie’s voice had deteriorated a lot by this point which says a lot for just how good his voice was because this still sounds so good.

I just watched Bohemian Rhapsody in theaters and I had to go back and watch the Live Aid recording for real. Freddie was truly the best showman and performer. I love how he engages with the audience

He was truly amazing!! Most of the audience were there to see other bands and Freddie completely stole the show. He had them mesmerized!! Truly iconic!!

I will never stop loving this incredible man and his amazing voice. So much passion and power in his vocals, while commanding a whole stadium effortlessly - although he had been advised not to sing at Live Aid because of an inflamed throat. Freddie always delivered, a true legend!
Paperblossom, This show was phenomenal! And to hear later that Freddie preformed against the Dr.s wishes, and also against his own Original thoughts made this so iconic! Not even the band knew of his illnesses. Such an incredible person! The throat alone was huge. He originally said No to Live Aid. He thought it would indicate that he had aids publicly, before he was ready to say it. Luckily for the world, Freddie changed his mind.
LeiAnne SW Freddie did not knew he was Hiv positive before this show. De doctors told him in 1987, Live Aid was in 1985.
The reason the were negative to perform during Live Aid had to do with Band Aid. They were not there during the recordings because of their world tour, wich took them to South Africa. South Africa was a no go, due to the apartheid. Queen was boycotted and a lot of negative attention about that. Besides that, Queen was not that comfortably about their World tour at that time, they felt they were not at their peak like they were on stage in the 75-82 periode. In 75-82 they were considered as one of the biggest and best bands on stage but they did not have that confidence during The Works tour.
When Geldof said to the band and Freddie in particulair, this is the perfect stage, the whole world ‘ hello planet, it is me’ ...Freddie said okay let’s be part of it. The only problem before the show was his throat, wich had to suffer a lot due to the world tour and his lifestyle. But it has nothing to do with the aids thing back then. That is one of the things in the movie wich is completely wrong 😉

Not just passion and power... He put his entire heart and soul into everything he did on stage, and every time he opened his mouth to sing. That's a large part of why he was such a great singer.

That's great! I've been trying to learn Korean but I find it difficult to fit in my schedule. Also I am fluent in Dutch and English. And at school I learn German, these languages all have something in common. Korean is so different, it's challenging but I'm not giving up.

I'm a singer with quite an overbite like Freddie and I can say from personal experience that it is hard to thrust your jaw forward and much more comfortable to put it in a dropped position . So I agree with him if he really did avoid fixing the overbite due to worry about his sound changing. Great reaction, love Freddie Mercury's voice so much.
Same here, I have to really stretch my jaw muscles to get my bottom teeth to clear my top teeth, so when I sing my jaw is naturally dropped and never flexing, because it can't really go anywhere even if I tried.
Just letting everyone know that Freddie was suffering from Laryngitis and Vocal Nodules. His doctor recommended that he not perform at Live Aid.
You can definitely hear it on the other songs they performed, where you see him forcing bits that were usually more comfortable.
He still knocked it out of the park though! These singers today get the sniffles and cancel shows!!
sl brown if you’re suggesting he went on for money, none of the performers were payed to be at Live Aid. It was a charity show. Freddie actually begged to be there
sl brown No singer, especially one as well-known as Freddie, would risk permanent/long-term damage to their voice just for money. Like if something had happened Freddie wouldn’t have been able to sing live for months or more, which damages their career. I can also almost guarantee that singing live like that for a long time wouldve been exhausting and maybe even painful.

From a medical standpoint --- it's easier to fix an overbite than reconstruct an entire nose --- and also technically more complex to make the new nose look natural on the face --- Streisand was wise not to toy with Nature

God, I adore this concert and Freddie is just... incredible...! Thank you for doing him. I'd love to see your opinion of some of his last songs like "The Show Must Go On" and "These Are The Days Of Our Lives" - though obviously, those are going to be studio, not live recordings. His death was a huge part of my early teens, coming just a couple of years after my father's death too...

Lovely analysis, Sam! Something I don't see much talked about is the perfection of Freddie's posture. Straight and taut buttocks (hey, those jeans hide nothing!) and yet so loose and agile. He used his whole body as an instrument. When I see him perform in these videos, it looks like he's a magnet sucking up energy from the crowd, magnifying it and then beaming it back out to them. You're so right: he was a magician.

This is probably the greatest single live song performance I’ve ever seen in my life.
The whole set is legendary, and widely considered the greatest live show ever done, but this song was the anchor of it all. I got chills when I watched it live and still do to this day. Absolutely bonkers.

I think we are the champion here was the anchor to this set for me. I was eight watching it at home and my jaw dropped when he came on, he commanded the audience not just in the stadium but us at home, he owned us all at that moment. Legend.
I love how he sings this whole song..but when he sings "How music changes through the years" I get intense shivers down my spine..it's a wonderful feeling and I often wonder why this happens at that point in this performance.

I graduated in 1985, I remember watching this (not at Wembley, at home) and was crying like a baby. I was SO happy and in love with this performance! Queen IS one of my faves, but this performance transcended EVERYONE. If you didn't care for Queen you surely would be in love when you left. Amazing what 20-25 minutes will do. Completely changed the lives of many. Gave you hope, love, spirit, and the will to do all. Thank you Freddie and Queen, I'll never forget that moment. The people that saw this live? Man, you were SO lucky you witnessed a part of rock-n-roll history!!

He had four extra molars in the back that pushed all of this other teeth around so yes...he was afraid that removing those and getting braces (at any age) would affect the tones he would/could get from the positioning of this tongue. I trust Freddie. IF he felt like it would change his tone too much, then it would because the anxiety alone would've made it destiny. Our bodies respond to our thoughts in a miriad of ways. He did what made him feel comfortable...as should we all.
Honestly I totally get the whole ‘not wanting to get work done one your mouth’ thing. Not exactly the same, but I learned how to play the flute in middle school (6th grade) with braces on. Then when I got them taken off in 8th grade, I basically had to re-learn how to play the flute because it was so different learning how to shape my mouth without the braces & how my teeth used to be. Interesting process. I ended up being very proficient the end years of high school in that instrument, but it was still an intense process of re-learning while my peers were already at a different stage in learning.

I've been hoping you would do a Queen reaction! You are correct - Freddie didn't want to have his teeth fixed because he felt that his 4 extra incisors are what made him sing so well. The funny thing is, his voice was not even up to par at this performance. By the time they get to We are the Champions, he's taking the lower notes and gets a little scratchy. If you really want to see how excellent his range really was, listen to Somebody to Love, then I'm Going Slightly Mad. He didn't just have the "Ay-yo" powerhouse vocals...their more toned down songs (Love of my Life, Slightly Mad, Those Were the Days of Our Lives) really show his range and how much control he had over his voice.
Freddie Mercury... absolutely one of the best artists to have ever lived (this coming from a Death Metal fan).
One of the best? No..He was and is THE BEST. Adam Lambert is an ok front man for Queen today, but even he knows he'll never fill the shoes of this man.

I've always thought Freddie was a baritone but sang as a tenor. But he had such great vocal control over his technique that you really couldn't tell. A lot of people said that he sang in the 4 octave range but I think this is what made him sound that way.
