A fantastic colorful autumn scene painting with reflections of trees,sky, rocks and grasses. So realistic looking, I feel like I am there looking into the stream seeing this all in person. Very nice painting, David!

I am watching this while I'm painting something else. This is my favorite painting, I think, along with the Tying Up marine piece. I love to hover over the progress bar further along to get a peek at it a little down the line. It's exciting to see what it will become as it progresses!

Wonderful! Yes, saving the palettes are great because you can refer back to them and if you mount them on matte board they look great in your studio!

You use 6 colors mixed together, so the whole harmony is very nice. I think the concept of Paint It Simply is great. I learned how to subtly change the color. Thank you for sharing this lesson. Finally, I was impressed by the activity of the kitchen paper. I thought it did a good job.

Wow! Thank you..I have been watching you paint roses..since I discovered your channel..but learned a ton more watching the landscape! I find it very helpful to see your palette as you progress…and now have realized my mistake of not mixing colors on top of what is already on the palette! I had many little mixing piles..and used up an entire Palette sheet before finishing a painting..plus your way ..I see will incorporate the colors. I love the limited palette…and have purchased your basic set!

Great tutorial and a beautiful painting! Question, just curious why you add the vertical movement with a paper towel as opposed to just painting it in with your brush as you apply the paint?
Just because it is a different type of mark. I use the painting knife, brush and paper towel. Being a left brained painter, I sometimes repeat marks, so using a paper towel always give me different marks.

I so appreciate the indepth explanation about water and reflection. I've been painting less than a year, and have struggled with reflection. I use canvas board since it's cheaper. I love the canvas texture for mountains and grasses, but my brush drags when I try to blur water. I will add extender and practice your technique.
Yes that can be a pain with the canvas. What I do is to blur with my finger after dragging over the canvas. Helps work the color into the weave for a softer effect.

Towards the end you stated a rule about the focus point and the background (having to do with colors, I think), close to the 1 hr. 24 min. mark. I tried to understand what you were saying. Would you mind restating that rule in writing for me? I appreciate it; I know it was very important!
I cannot find your paints anywhere. On your Amazon there are only three colors. Have you given up selling your paints? I can’t even find your basic six color set anywhere.

@@JansenArtEducation Thank you so much. I am making the transition from hyper-realism with pencil and pen to painting, and it is a bold jump. I have the eye for the spontaneous, what you call "interesting", those breaks and oddities in work that add accidental detail to something like trees and clouds __ there really should be a name for it -- and I have the "eye". But since I have only heretofore been a pencil, charcoal and ink pen artist (with some sculpting thrown in for good measure), I am fast discovering that painting and the use of color is a beast of an entirely different nature. My biggest issue is mixing the color to the right tone and vibrancy I know about happy accidents and working within a stream of consciousness. It is the COLOR that is giving me the most trouble. I am always telling myself that i need to just take a while to practice mixing, until I can see a color and know immediately what pigments to blend together to make that color. But I am one of those guys who wants to PAINT RIGHT NOW, without taking the time to LEARN....it's a blessing and a curse of mine. At any rate, I have been dabbling in oils and acrylics, and my preference and first love is the choppy impressionist feel of the painting knife. I want to be a painting knife artist, since that is the style of painting that moves me the most. And since discovering you about a week ago, I am finally feeling a bit more confident in my approach. All this being said, after reading this long missive, any suggestions? One day I want to be a painting knife impasto artist. I simply love that kind of impressionism, and the knifing you do. Thanks for responding. You are a good and decent man.
