The winners of the FIA European Touring Car Cup’s Super 2000 and Super 1600 categories were honoured at the ETCC Awards Ceremony, which took place beneath the Eiffel Tower on the banks of the River Seine in Paris this evening.
Kris Richard (Switzerland) and Niklas Mackschin (Germany) collected their trophies for winning the ETCC Super 2000 Cup and ETCC Super 1600 Cup respectively as the all-action ETCC season was celebrated in the French capital.
Other drivers recognised during the evening included Petr Fulín (Czech Republic) and Norbert Nagy (Hungary), who finished second and third in ETCC S2000, plus Germans Andreas Rinke and Kevin Hilgenhövel, who placed second and third in ETCC S1600. There was also recognition for the German motorsport federation, the DMSB, following its victory in the ETCC Nations’ Cup.
François Ribeiro, Head of Eurosport Events, the ETCC promoter, joined FIA representatives Zoltán Balla and Rod Parkin in presenting the trophies to the various winners.
Kris Richard (Switzerland, Honda Civic): S2000 position: First Points: 109 Wins: 5 Poles: 1 Fastest laps: 1
“I am very happy to be ETCC champion at my first attempt. Looking back, I have two races that really mattered to me. The first was in Le Castellet, this was not a good race but in the first race they put me into a spin and I did the fastest lap with a bad rear axle and that was one of my best races. And also winning at the Nürburgring, the best race track on the planet and that was also one of the best races of course. I hope I can continue with touring cars next year and I hope also with Honda but what comes next I don’t know.”
Niklas Mackschin (Germany, Ford Fiesta): S1600 position: First Points: 138 Wins: 8 Poles: 3 Fastest laps: 6
“To win this title again makes me happy and proud. Thanks to my team for a really good job all season and last season when I won the title for the first time. I hope to drive in Super 2000 next year, hopefully against Petr and Kris. I really hope and it looks good. It has been a good season for me with lots of wins and some interesting battles. I am already looking to the future.”
The 2017 FIA European Touring Car Cup season gets underway at Monza in Italy from 28-30 April. Visits to the Hungaroring, Nürburgring Nordschleife, Vila Real, Zolder and newcomer Most follow with the Czech venue hosting the action from 6-8 October.
