Fun Fact! During the Industrial Revolution in France, many weavers objected to the new mills that were taking away their livelihood. They responded by throwing wooden clogs into the mill workings to break them. These clogs were called sabots, those throwing them were called saboteurs and the act itself was called sabotage.

I mean, they get a lot of their slaves from the capitol wasteland. And, considering the model of pip boy in FO3 can't be removed without chopping off the arm, it's not a stretch for them to believe that the slavers caught someone from a vault.
Is it a bit of a stretch? Yeah, maybe, but it does explain that in a non lore breaking way.

Can Dwellers take off their Pip-Boy’s? The BOS Outcast had to cut off a guy’s arm just to get it, couldn’t they just take off the Pip-Boy? In Fallout 4, a guy asks you to give him EVERYTHING just so you can join his movement, if you give him everything, you don’t give him your Pip-Boy and he doesn’t say anything about it. I’m a little confused how the Pip-Boy functions in this world

    • @NoBody-lj5xh
      @NoBody-lj5xh 3 ปีที่แล้ว +17

@@thicccheese4007 In Fallout 1-Tactics, the pip-boy was just a handheld device, and it's never explained why you can never get rid of it, beyond the fact that it's more useful than any other item in the entire game. In fallout 3 and, because it recycled 3's assets, New Vegas, the Pip-Boy model 3000 was introduced, and in those two games, it was practically a cybernetic enhancement, it burrowed it's way into your bone structure for God's sakes. In Fallout 4...who fucking knows. Because even when you give them 4 goddamn YEARS Bethesda still can't even explain the only piece of equipment that has been featured in every game of the series, or even mention why every incarnation of said device is different.

Professionalism with a interest in profit, a wild group that values a alpha that is strong, cunning, and ruthless, and a bunch of blood crazed psychopaths. The Pitt raiders I respect for a few reasons.1- Their leader actually has a plan other then raiding and pillaging, a long term plan that requires necessary evils for the greater good. (Most raider gangs just go for getting more of what they already have.)2-Some of those raiders were once Pitt Slaves who fought to get where they are. They weren't pulled from the outside, they were people already there who got their ticket out of a "bad end".3-I say they are more advanced then the common raider gang. Equipment, structure, and actually have a purpose.

Just a little note on your comment about the Pre-War workers.
Stopping progress is one thing, but the way the robots are described gives off a "gun at your head" vibe. The way managment emphasizes the "firing" off the workers who destroyed the robot and the way the robots acted at the end, tells me, that managment probalby didnt fire these employess, but fired at them. Workers werent laid off. They were disposed off.
I also guess that the protectrons shot at anyone without an ID, given the first entry on the terminals.
Also, who uses armed robots to work a steel mill.
This is not a way to replace workers with robots.

The problem is (that's a current problem BTW), there aren't enough new jobs with the new technology. That's the point of it. They want to employ less people to lower the costs. All this 'new technology equals new jobs' is in reality 'new technology creates one new job and makes 10 obsolete'.
What we need is a new way of thinking. I mean what are you going to do if you can provide 200% of a populations needs with 50% of the workforce? You'll have an unemployment rate of 50% by no fault of them.
BTW, the real numbers will be different, but it shows the principle of the problem we are going to face sooner than we want to think about.

Just because Orwell took some inspiration the Soviet Union (and war time Britain) doesn't mean that it's Orwellian propaganda..
The soviet style propaganda is very much about the lower classes getting what's owed to them, and no one standing above them anymore, and that only by self-sacrificing for the community can real progress be made.
Orwell's propaganda was far broader than what the speaker is going into, especially considering that it normally incorporates the addition of doublespeak (a very important part of Orwellian speech), blind devotion to someone who knows better and will protect you and references to "non persons" who threaten the peaceful life.

I think Tom meant that replacing humans with mechanization is inevitable but this isn't the way to go about it. You don't lie to your men and then just one day fire them all. That inspires riots and violence and just shows how scummy the fallout universes corporate ethics were.
People alone are almost always reasonable and rational. You sit your men down one at a time, explain the situation, maybe help them find a job elsewhere either in the company or another company with a positive reference. In an ideal world you'd even give them a few months severance pay to help cushion their transition into their next job when they find one. With all the money you'll be saving by mechanizing it's honestly the least they can do and brings a little good karma their way. Of course that's rare even for company's in our world.
But more important than anything you don't lie to your men and let them know as soon as possible so they can start looking for work elsewhere. Employees have to give employers notice, so it's honestly the bare minimum to reciprocate that respect instead of just kicking them out the door with a sayonara because you know as well as I do the CEO is going to write himself a big bonus check for slashing staff costs.
Backwards world we live in really. We reward all the wrong things.

well yeah in any business situation thats just the right thing to do for your employees for whatever reason you have to do layoffs, but in the video this goes to a whole new extreme, theres a difference between industrial enhancements which alters the number of jobs per production, and completely replacing all human effect of the production, work, and sale of a business product, in terms of what happens in this vid that really cant happen cuz theres much more to it than just the production costs for the business, if theres no workers theres no citizens with money to buy said products when they are not working, so this whole idea of autonomy or even a public with no free will just falls apart and takes out the idea of an economy with it

    • @josephmatthews7698
      @josephmatthews7698 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

@@criticalthinking1144 That's what's happening in the real world right now yet stocks have been growing for over a decade.
How is that possible? Your average citizen doesn't own stocks. It's an area dominated by the wealthy. When they say the top 1% owns 99% of the wealth this is what they are talking about.
So despite inflation rising steadily and wages being flat since the 70's and 80's the economy is growing.
So you have the loads of people who were making good money in manufacturing now making entry level service position money.
Yet the economy has been 'growing' for over a decade. How? Despite inflation we switched to global manufacturing abroad where we can pay people even less so prices drop and the average citizen can afford it despite those low paying jobs.
All that automation pushed your average American into the service sector but now even service positions are being automated.
When service becomes as automated as manufacturing we are going to have the kind of collapse you were talking about.

@@josephmatthews7698 agreed, im usually not that interested in politics (or at least not the 2 party quarrel crap they do now), more so i try to look back and understand the dynamic of how democracy and free trade capitialism was intended and supposed to work when structured, then apply it to today while questioning whether somethings broken and need to be fixed, or just needs to be updated to fit a modern situation of cirumstances, and as far as i can tell its both lol, theres some stuff that just needs to be evaluated again and addressed, but the bigger issue is democracy and capitialism are just pretty much broken now, so business is becoming more restrictive and limited and now companies are having personal opinions you have to agree with or your ousted, and democracy is broken cuz nobody can choose anyone other than the Republicrats
yes im intentionally grouping them together cuz even tho they pretend like they are divided on 2 sides they really work together and agree as 1 unit, the rest is a show to divide the public / the people along only 2 sides so they fight and argue between each other about the 2 sides, instead of the people questioning "why the govt isnt doing their job of finding the reasonable middle ground to compromise for the majority of the country?"
which is cuz they dont have to, the competition aspect of democracy has been broken since they reduced it to a 2 party system which it wasnt supposed to be, and now no matter what they do they all still get to keep the same jobs, make the same money as part of the system etc. which is broken lol

24:33 I work as a welder in the manufacturing industry. And I have some problems with this philosophy. I used to work for a multibillion dollar company who was notorious for finding "cheaper automated" labour. (They will remain unnamed for obvious reasons) one day we got a shipment of automated robot welders, replacing a good chunk of the line. Now I of course dont believe in sabotage to win over automation. But do strongly beleive in sticking to your guns and not giving up. The way we went about getting rid of these machines, was simply out performing them, and making it clear to management we wouldn't be laid off to machines. We worked hard and exhausted ourselves, making sure every weld laid down was perfect and exceeded specifications. Eventually we outperformed those robots to a point, that the higher ups were losing money on the robots, and we were producing more profit. They were forced to sell them. Over 60 men kept their jobs, do to hard work, and determination. Sticking to our guns showed them, we weren't going to be replaced.

I think you got on the soapbox for the wrong reason at 23:45 in the video. The manager was saying that it was a bad way to do it, not that it was bad to do it. It's an unfortunately common strategy. Instead of telling your workers to start looking for new work because they'll be replaced soon, management intentionally lies or withholds information in order to bleed their workers for every hour they can until the new system is in place.
This gives the workers no warning and no time to search for new work, and the reason why management does this is because people stop showing up to work that they know will end, or they might find a new job before their old one fully phases them out. There are correct ways to do it (have workers sign binding agreements that void their compensation if they depart early, pay them more for their final month after warning them, or use a random lottery to replace small quantities of workers at a time), but all of those things cost time or effort.
In the Fallout universe, it's right in line with the dystopia of pre-war society, down to murdering employees instead of using the police like they're supposed to. It parodies something that happens too often.

So both of you need to get your heads out of your asses and understand that until robots can endlessly produce whatever we want at no cost to us, we will fight for out jobs. 23:43 this was a....disturbing probe into your Ideals Ox.... It's much more complicated than just "adapting". Given enough time machines will be able to replace humans in literally any job conceivable, including even science & research jobs. It's efficient admittedly, but where does that leave us? We now serve no purpose by your logic, and believing the machines will serve us after reaching such a high point of advancement is not at all a reasonable expectation.
I agree that how the workers reacted ultimately didn't help them but management was also clearly lying to them, and they knew it. What were they to do? Find jobs at a new steel mill? well that's entirely possible, but by your own logic, that job is likely to be replaced with a machine too in the very near future. Taking it to it's furthest extreme, all labor based jobs would be replaced by machines, because they are simply cheaper and more efficient. So now they are expected to advance their credentials, to be retrained to learn a new job. That costs money, money these people may not have.
This mindset disproportionately reduces available jobs to the amount of population we have, even in a 1st world country like America. This increases the number of unemployed & homeless people (not to mention it's downright fucked up) and further increases the divide between the upper and lower class.
I'm not saying that inevitably replacing labor intensive jobs with machines is bad, quite the opposite. But we need to do so responsibly, it needs to be done over a very long period of time, so society can adapt. This "survival of the fittest" mentality of yours is a little worrying.... everyone deserves the opportunity to live a good life. Taking that away from someone for the sake of "efficiency" (and therefore greed) is inhumane. We are no better than the animals if this is the mentality we adopt as a species, and will inevitably lead to our downfall.
The lesson of Tom McMullin is that, when man is replaced with machine for the sake of greed, ultimately man will Die.

Even if you did introduce a robotic work force, your going to hurt the job market anyway. Robots if lacking any self awareness are best fit for jobs humanity does not do well, for instance a machine is better at assembling masses of cars rather then a group of humans. But doing so will ruin jobs, this is why you have to build industries around the machines, create jobs. Otherwise the homeless population will boom, and thus the economic strain of high unemployment will ensue and so will crime and then society will begin to break down. But no matter what way you go at it Oxhorn, Chunkblaster machines will replace jobs in the future. The important detail is how will we adapt to it, and how we can avoid as much human suffering as possible in so doing.

i love how this master slaver dude keeps talking like "we are going to work together to make this place good" and "we will build the city with hard labour" well the only ones i see working are the slaves. neither he nor his raiders seem to do any work at all.
the lesson is not "why" not to replace humans with machines. rather, it is "how" not to replace humans with machines. if you do it like the management of this factory, replacing all workers at once, there will be a lot of anger, destroyed machines and innocent blood spilled. if you do it a bit smarter and less easily noticable than just firing everyone at the same time, it might work out well enough.
the thing with adapting is a bit of a false equation. let's say the factory starts out with 100 workers. now management decides that it is time to replace all of them with robots. now, suddenly the factory only needs maybe 5 or 10 technicians to perform occasional maintenance. where are the other 90 workers going to go? and that is under the assumption that each and every worker has the neccessary skill and money to immediately start paying for a course on how to become a robot maintenance technician, which very likely isn't the case. but even if that is the case, you still have 100 former workers fight over 10 technician jobs and the others end up unemployed. of course a very good situation for the factory - robots are cheaper and faster than workers and by having many people fight over very few technician jobs they can get away with very low wages for the technicians, so a lot of money is saved on wages meaning more profit for the company - but for the workers it is pretty bad.

In Pittsburgh we call them Still Mills.
    Also:
    PPG Place
    The Still Building
And Pittsburgh used to be that smoggy irl. Men- sorry, WORKERS would carry two shirts to change into after they go home.
Pittsburgh had many steel mills that were shut down, many many people lost jobs. I can see why these workers got violent, and I don't blame them.

I don‘t think that‘s the meaning of Tom‘s story at all. It‘s meant to make us draw parallels between the Pitt of the past and present; different eras of downtrodden workers and management who see labourers as expendable and replaceable.

Tom's story is very relevant, or at least it will be soon. Current bots (hardware and software) are already writing copy, writing music, driving cars, doing legal discovery, and "general purpose" robots are already in prototype. Once general purpose robots make the same transition VCRs and DVD players made from only the very wealthy to the general public, most jobs will become scarce, including but not at all limited to making more hardware and software robots. There's no clear answer, but simply fighting progress isn't going to work any better than it did for Tom's coworkers.

Whats it called...the Singularity. The point in which robots can walk, talk, and mimic human behavior to the point that the two are so alike you can't tell which is which. Yeah, I say that it can be a reality eventually.

I kinda find it a bit contradicting the way you defend the factorie's management after all those videos talking about morals, good/evil contrast human decency and common values, the workers did what any human with a crappy job that needs to hold on to, ifthe supervisor was honest with them maybe they wouldn't have thought that he was in it too, it's what happens when you push someone to despair, the whole adapt to survive philosophy, in this specific context looks a bit raider-ish, ''the strong survive while the weak die''. Maybe this is the only kind of job that these workers where fit to do, rendering it obsolete would be putting a lot of men and women and possibly families on the streets, doing so just for the company to get more and more profit, it's just downright selfish and as you would put it. Evil.
Still love your vids, and hope you keep 'em coming Ox.

Love your videos Ox but what you said about the factory workers was a very bad take. Like others have said its easy to say that people should adapt and change or die but that not only completely lacks empathy but also isn't realistic as alternatives are not always available especially when you have a lower income which is almost always the case as the working class are always the first to go in the name of "progress"

23.43 said the youtuber whos job can't be taken by a robot. I love your content but I absolutely disagree with your opinion on this. Im not proud. In their shoes I would freak the hell out. Maybe not as far as those men went but still. Im not trying to be offensive, but perhaps walk a mile in someones shoes whos job may one day be replaced when they are already struggling to just get by. Thats all. As I said still love your content. Respectfully disagree
