  • Debashish Banerji, PhD, is Haridas Chaudhuri Professor of Indian Philosophies and Cultures and Chairman of the East West Psychology Department at the California Institute of Integral Studies in San Francisco. He is author of Seven Quartets of Becoming: A Transformative Yoga Psychology Based on the Diaries of Sri Aurobindo and also The Alternatate Nation of Abanindranath Tagore, a book about his great grandfather. He edited an anthology about his great uncle, Rabindranath Tagore in the Twenty-First Century. His newest anthology is titled Critical Posthumanism and Planetary Futures.
Here he explains that posthumanism is a cultural movement that offers a critical appraisal of both enlightenment humanism and transhumanism. It is aligned with post-colonialism in its emphasis on indigenous spiritual traditions. It expresses concern that the over-emphasis on the human capacity for rational thought leads to the marginalization of other human capacities.
New Thinking Allowed host, Jeffrey Mishlove, PhD, is author of The Roots of Consciousness, Psi Development Systems, and The PK Man. Between 1986 and 2002 he hosted and co-produced the original Thinking Allowed public television series. He is the recipient of the only doctoral diploma in "parapsychology" ever awarded by an accredited university (University of California, Berkeley, 1980). He has served as vice-president of the Association for Humanistic Psychology, and is the recipient of its Pathfinder Award for outstanding contributions to the field of human consciousness. He is also past-president of the non-profit Intuition Network, an organization dedicated to creating a world in which all people are encouraged to cultivate and apply their inner, intuitive abilities.

So very interesting. This interview has led me to recall the classic sci-fi film * Metropolis (1927) by Fritz Lang, .* And of course the (1932) book, * Brave New World * I believe that towards the beginning of the last century, writers, artists and such were becoming well aware of this posthuman phenomenon. Probably due to the Wests ultra-rapid industrialisation and massive technological leaps.
I can only conclude we are in the thick of it now.

Thank you NTA for these interviews! Last night I watched the third of this series of interviews with Dr. Banerji last night and will watch the others. He's such an excellent teacher and the material is fascinating! The similarities between the teachings of the Vedas and Upanishads and Buddhism [later in its origins] are mentioned here. I consider myself a contemporary Christian and "A Course in Miracles" is my spiritual home base, so to speak. The similarities between what Dr. Banjeri is expressing here and ACIM are also very many. ACIM says that there are many paths to the top of the mountain, and indeed there needs to be. My last dream image before I woke up this morning was of a simple 2-D illustration of a black hand (no gender) with long thin fingers and thumb continuously extending outward. I later compared it with the hand and singular finger of a white male God pointing his finger toward Adam's in the Sistine Chapel. I also heard a voice speaking with an Indian accent as I was waking up that said "All is spiritual" and I took that to mean everything - even manmade objects. It's not that I haven't thought that before, it was still good to hear, particularly regarding material objects (thus consciousness and telekinesis perhaps?).

Jeff, this interview is ASTONISHING and IMPORTANT. It would be very interesting to see what you, James Tunney and Debashish all together might come up with. WOW. There are not enough stars to review this vid.

It's commonly conceded, that at the end of his life Nietzsche was crippled by insanity. What most scholars are loathe to concede, is that Nietzsche's insanity was not confined to the last period of his life. I contend that the seed of Nietzsche's insanity was present throughout most of his life, as a growing influence over his thought processes - and that, one notable product of this insanity, was the concept of the "superman". In Nietzsche's philosophy, the process of competition & conflict is the ladder through which individuals can attain ascendancy over others in the society around them. This is not new. In fact, it's quite old. It can be traced back to the Roman motto of "Might Makes Right". Nietzsche influenced the philosophers who followed him historically, of which in my opinion, the most notable was Ayn Rand, whose "philosophy" as apologist for the parasitic class was also a thinly veiled "Might Makes Right". What it boils down to, is that insanity is contagious beyond malfunctions on the personal level; it also results in malfunctions on the social level of group dynamics - which is to be expected, given that group functions are the net product of the individuals & subgroups involved.
In Transhumanism, it seems as if logic & economic might become the justification for a techno-elite to make decisions exerting control over the masses; the rationalized right to make decisions changing the course of evolution & history, and (potentially deleteriously) affecting the well-being of subservient (dominated?) individuals "for the greater good" - as THEY (those applying power) define such to be.
In Posthumanism, the key point which didn't seem well defined during this discussion, is exactly what being human IS. How can one plan the shape of what comes after, if WHAT is being succeeded isn't properly defined?

Binge watched the InPresence series recently and Jeffrey vowed to commit to losing weight. Good to see with these new videos taped almost a year later that he succeeded. Well done Jeffrey!

At somewhere there about, 24:20, “CONSCIOUSNESS IS GENERATED BY THE BRAIN” - i looked up ‘generated’, “cause something” - so what i am hearing him say is - the brain ‘generates/causes consciousness - then not too long ago i heard Jeffrey say “I don’t believe consciousness has reached”, (paraphrasing), consciousness has not reached there yet
CONSCIOUSNESS IS THE UNIFIED FIELD - TO SEGREGATE CONSCIOUSNESSES AS THOU IT WERE AN ELEMENT IS LIKEN TO THE RIGHT HAND ARM RESELLING WITH THE LEFT HAND -

Just arrived in Albuquerque. Keep looking around everywhere I go to see if I can get glimpse of Dr. Mishlove! Too bad I don't have more time here. I miss Albuquerque, probably where I will retire. Been 10 years since last time I lived here. But alas, I will be back.

So interresting, good point about the bhagavad gita...last week the book was right in front of me in a second hand store, hh, bought it naturaly... as i understand, All creates and created everything, consiousness is in everything, and for human we are given the ratio to understand just that, All does not en power war, All does fights against surpression of consiousness, only that kind of war can be won, that is why we have to learn detachement of our surpressors, like some gast, born "alone", on your show allready were from birth and even pre birth.
Science and Technologies are part of All too, they are tules indeed for better or worse, it is All about balance, i learned. The outcome of matter does not count in a state of awarenes, the ratio counts, awarenes allready knows.

Interesting play of post humanism, existentialism and transhumanism. Revealing of what may come in our mental frontier. Uncertainty in the hybridization of present and future consciousness. Will there be a giant leap forward into another realm? Is being human fast becoming an anachronism? Maybe yet another shift in cosmic music.

I can't find a place to send you an email, so I'll comment here, hoping you'll see my suggestion at some point. Someone I think you should consider interviewing is Anne Baring, author of The Dream of the Cosmos. She was interviewed at length on Buddha at the Gas Pump (a really great interview), and there are some very good videos of her presentations on TH-cam. She is a remarkable person with a valuable message and point of view.

Interesting conversation, I do agree that there are some dogmatic materialists that balk at these esoteric discussions, but the true technologists know that they are important to incorporate into our technology. If you read biographies of western technologists and inventors, they did have mystical leanings. Edison used hypnogagic techniques to gain knowledge and ideas, probably harnessing the power of lucid dreaming. I also know, from reading the biography of Tesla that he held some fascinating esoteric thoughts. I think the materialists extremists are causing modern thinkers to "stay in the closet" unfortunately, less they be marked.
As for Post human, I don't think we can call something post human when the definition for human is so diverse, how can we put a label on it and say "we are past this diverse plethora of cultures and ideas, now we belong here", seems silly to me, although I am no where near versed in this subject as you both are.
I think the future lies in the simulation hypothesis merging with modern religions. You see it more and more in modern culture, and important individuals are starting to accept it. I would love to hear what you two have to say about that.
Reality has awesome graphics, but terrible spawn mechanics. :D

@Bonsai Tree I don't think there is anything wrong with wanting to befriend our first creations and not offend them, I never said worship them. Ah the same old story, fear of the unknown and new. Even Dr. Jeff disappoints me with his fears. Unfortunate really. The only fear I have are of the ones who misunderstand and react before thinking.
