    Hey James thanks for your content and knowledge. I'm about to do my own Headlights in my 2017 infiniti qx80. My question is in my headlight set up I've got a Big projector light thats the high and low beam all in one. Then I've got like a eagle claw at the top thats the running light are park. Then I have 2 more smaller wich looks like projector lights but their not. Their the emergency flashers and blinker lights. Is their a way I can hook those lights up to come on when my headlights come on and still work as my blinkers when I need them to be are can I swap the wires and make my eagle claw park light the blinker light and then the 2 blinker lights will act as the park light? This is my first headlight modification and I don't wanna burn any wiring up. These SUVs aren't cheap at all. Don't wanna make any mistakes so I figured I'd reach out to someone with knowledge like you. Thanks

    Hi James, not sure if you can help but I have focus 2012 as you know that car doesn’t have DRL so I have got a voltage automatic detector to switch on the lights when engine is running using the ground and positive from the adapter. Then I have tapped into the indicator light.
    Now I have a problem when engine is running drl is on but when I indicate Both the drl and turn signal are on and the sequence stops working just flashes instead. (Rather than indicator override the drl)
    Do you know what could be the problem possible two different grounds? I would of though that didn’t matter?

    I’m not really sure where to connect the yellow wire... because there are about 3 different wires in my turn signal thingy where the bulb connects. Does it matter which wire I choose to connect it with?

    • @Jamesthelightguy
      @Jamesthelightguy  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It does matter. One wire should be power for your parking lights (those are on continuously when your headlights are on). Another one should be a ground wire which we want to use. The third wire should be power to the turn signal (again we want to connect this wire to the yellow/red wire on your DRL strip).
      Of course this is assuming your vehicle uses the normal setup of having the bulbs always connected to ground and the switch controlling the power. It gets complicated if it's the reverse like my friend's car.

    I'm planning on putting these in the tail end of my sport bike but I don't want the DRLs just the turn signals. So I would just wire to ground and then yellow to the blinker and the red would just be disconnected?

    • @Jamesthelightguy
      @Jamesthelightguy  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      No, in most cases the red wire must be receiving power for the signal to function. So you will likely have to connect the both the red and yellow wires to the turn signal. That way the red gets power, but the yellow wire overrides which color LEDs get illuminated.

      You can bypass the DRL function by connecting both the main power wire and the signal wire to your vehicle's turn signal. See this video for an example:

    • @Jamesthelightguy
      @Jamesthelightguy  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      For the rear i would use the strips i show in this video:
      th-cam.com/video/ksqDfpkbgZg/w-d-xo.html
      If you can get them to fit, I would affix them in place with clear silicone caulk. You have to find a way to get the wires inside the car, behind the tail lamps. If there is no pre-existing hole one may need to be made and then sealed after the wires are fed through. Then it's a simple matter of identifying the tail lamp (Not brake lamp) power wire to use as the pain power, the turn signal power wire and a ground wire. Once identified, splice the appropriate wire to the corresponding one on the car harness and it should work (Well, depending on the model of strip. The signal may only function when the tail lamps are providing main power if a cheap variant of the strips is used.)

    • @Jamesthelightguy

      You can mitigate the risk be ensuring your soldering joints are properly sealed/protected. The LED strip itself can be submerged in water without shorting, so that is not an issue.

    hopefully I'm not too late to ask, I want to install these on a classic car which has no daytime running lights. would I just splice red with yellow to the turn signal wire and black to chassis? Or red to a constant power (like stereo) and yellow to turn signal wire? Thank you

    • @Jamesthelightguy
      @Jamesthelightguy  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It depends on what you want them to do. Black is definitely going to be connected to chassis/ground and yellow is going to the turn signal wire. If you connect red to the turn signal as well the strips will not light up white (off unless turn signal is active) but if you connect red to a parking light the strip will be white whenever the parking light is on and amber when the signal is active (but it will not work at all if the parking light is off)
      The last (best option) is to connect the Black and yellow wires as described before but split the red wire in two. Connect one of the red ends to the turn signal with the yellow wire and put a dose diode in series between the other red ends and the parking light. This way the signal will always function regardless of the parking light having power and the diode prevents the turn signal from also powering the parking lights.
      If you email me (my email is in the about section on my channel page) or message me on Instagram, I can draw a diagram for you.

    • @jourrapide8298
      @jourrapide8298 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Jamesthelightguy Woah, I honestly did not expect a response so quick and in depth.
      But coming from a bit of experience, the diagram seems pretty easy. I was just confused as to how the strips worked, but with the set up you gave; were pretty much by passing the white light (connected to tail lights respectively) by giving power to the amber strip once the turn signal is given power. Thus, its more of a double function headlight?
      Honestly I'm looking more forward to your channel, and hoping to see more automotive wiring tips like fender light installs etc. Thank you for your time again

      Hey, video was a failure, however through my experimenting I was able to proper it is possible to extend the strips. The issue I faced was the way these strips figure out the timing for the turn signal flow. The closer to the starting side, the more electrical traces there are under the protective coating and all of them would need their own jumper wire. That in and of itself isn't too bad, but my soldering is awful and I melted the traces right out of the strip by having my soldering iron set too high. I destroyed two strips attempting it.
      So, is it possible? Technically yes, but "practically" impossible for me. I'm sorry I won't be able to upload a video tomorrow for you.

      I don't know how he wired up the relay and resistors to get his working, but I have to imagine there must be an easy work around. (Like adding a small capacitor across the the strip's signal wire and ground wire. But I would have to play around with that idea to see if it does anything at all).
      The relay idea sort of makes sense in my head (having battery power going to the relay, normal ground, the strip signal wire as output, ignition power as primary relay input switch and the turn signal power as the conditional input switch.) But that's just a theory and you'd have to run a separate one for the other side which seems complicated and bulky. If it even works like in my head.
      Unfortunately, I don't think I have any solid answer for you. I'll try messing with mine again but I wasn't able to duplicate this issue previously, so I can't promise I'll find a solution. I'll let you know how my experiments turn out.

      I can't recreate the strange voltage fluctuations that were causing the other guy's issue and may be similar to what's happening with yours. It's impossible for me to give you a solid solution right now. Sorry.

      We'll get there eventually. I could use some help though. Consider showing one of my videos to your friends, maybe they'll do the same. For now, I'm just making videos for fun and if you guys find them informative or entertaining, that's a huge plus!

    Hi James, I have installed similar (or even the same) leds into my car but have got an issue. I tried to put 50w 6ohm resistor and then 21w blinker resistor (i dont actually know the resistance, got it off ebay) but irt didnt work too. My issue looks like that

    The only time when I menagaed to get it working was when I connected DRL wire straight to the battery but it would not work if I hooked it up to the original DRLs. Do you know what I could use in that case? Thanks in advance!

      Did you wire the resistor in series or parallel? The resistor should be parallel in the circuit.
      Are you planning on not using the factory turn signal bulb at all?
      Are you trying to have only the turn signal function without the use of the white DRL?
      I need to know the answer to each of these questions to best assist you. You can reply to this comment or direct message me on instagram or via my email (in the about tab on my channel page).
      I'll do my best to resolve your lighting issue.

      James the light guy Thanks for your reply! Your answer is much appreciated. I connected it in parallel. I wanted to have only turn signals and will not use the stock turn signal.

      Try connecting the white DRL white directly to the turn signal wire. It should hopefully only light up the turn signal when you want and not the DRL. If you turn on the hazard flasher, do they work as you intended?

      James the light guy No they dont work, they behave the same way as if I turned the blinker on. I did try that too, and DLRs are then flashing along with blinker :/

      Interesting. Let me mess with mine and my power supply to try recreating your issue. By all rights, that should have worked, but we'll keep at it. There's the possibility your vehicle powers everything all the time and the switch breaks the ground side of the circuit.... I've run into a couple cars that do that and they are a pain.
      Connect the strip's turn signal power wire like it's supposed to be and then try touching the strip ground wire to a good ground on the car and see if it turns on without using the switch in the car.

    Not sure I can trust a company that cannot spell "Angel" correctly. Angle lights don't seem to fit.
