I'd just like to add this detail: It's not only where you are that matters, but also where you are from. I'm a Canadian expat in Korea, and for the life of me, I cannot find a platform on which to invest. Including Firstrade (and a bunch of others). It's a big headache actually. Many brokerages won't let me invest because I'm a Canadian not living in Canada right onw. And the others don't let me invest because I'm from Canada, and not from Korea, where I currently live.

You buy the underlying asset in eToro, CFD are used when you are leveraged. It allows you to social trade, where you copy the portfolio and its changes of another investor automatically.

Your information on Etoro is not completely correct or is outdated. First: With Etoro you can buy the underlying stock. You only buy CFD when you used leverage or buying an index (not an ETF). (This came in effect in 2018) Second: US citizen can also use Etoro. (This came in effect some months ago.) Some extra information: Etoro allows copy trades. You can basically copy someone portfolio and all its actions. But as I understand, as of now only US citizen can copy US citizen, while non-US citizen can copy everyone. Some more extra information: When trading stocks, there is no commission fee when not using leverage. (Don't know if this is also true for US citizens.)
