  • One of the most famous paintings from the 1700s and Neoclassical Art Period is Oath of the Horatii by Jacques-Louis David. Stunningly realistic and filled with emotion and drama, this Neoclassical masterpiece is really fun to analyze.
The story and history behind David's Oath of the Horatii includes Roman legend of the Horatti and Curiatii families (this is typical of Neoclassicism in the 1700s to revert back to Roman arts), French revolution, and the way that the meaning of art can change depending on audience and circumstance. The painting's realistic nature is captivating. In this video I dive into an analysis of Oath of the Horatii, which helps you see why this art piece is so incredible.

Great video, I love the way you spoke about the context that i didn't really know about. I think often about this painting and the more i come to understand it and its meaning, the more I come to despise it and the more it entices me to think about it. I think its sort of an enemy to me, and it compells me so deeply beacuse I have great admiration for its technical brilliance, and it uses that brilliance to represent everything I hate about gender roles, and the strenght of the patriarchy, as well as the strong sense of violence rooted in almost a blinding form of nationalism.

With all these triangles, were the painters aware of this technique at the time, or was it a coincidence?

    • @ArtHistorywithAlder

Triangular and pyramidal composition became popular during the High Renaissance and we're taught in apprenticeships, texts that discussed art theory, and the academies. These techniques helped bring stability, focus, and 3 dimensionality to the art.
