  • Art History Online presents ‘The Oath of the Horatii’ by French painter Jacques-Louis David (1748-1825).
The work is part of the collection of Louis XVI and is hung in Musée du Louvre in Paris.
In this video we’ll first take a look at the painting itself. What do we see? After that we’ll go into the historical context and interpretations. What led David to make this painting? What is depicted and what does it mean?
Since this painting is seen as the paragon of Neoclassicism we will also take some time to discuss this artistic style.

    Brilliant analysis thank you.
This painting is so powerful and beautiful it was the painting that inspired me to take an interest in art back in 2006 and now art is my number one passion in life. David, although politically and morally questionable, undeniably was the one of the greatest artists who ever lived. This analysis from Art history taught me things I did not previously know about this painting, one of my favourites and most revered.
    Thank you

Today we just have subjects on Romanticism or Impressionist aproach, this is our heritage , who learns that History in Art Academy Fine Arts ? in modern times ? Renewal Art Center have it in Florence, but to produce really Art of Painting, is amazing what they have done. Realism is my style .

David was a master at navigating and manipulating extremely divergent political movements and their primary actors.
Adored and admired by Louis the 16th, Robespierre, and Napoleon.
This ability he had, is an art in and of itself. Goya also possessed this talent.

Nice interpretation, maybe we can interprete it like this too; whoever helds the power people will follow them. It was code of the Romans too, we build up our empire through intelligence and raw might, they seems to not care anything else but these during their early days where they overpower their rivals, abduct the Sabine women they were using their might and wit.
