The gift card around the hole idea is great. I'll be adding that tonight to my power pods. Love the idea for the wheels too! I've been thinking about chucking up several layers of foam to my wood lathe to make some beautiful wheels. I'll be adding the pop rivet piece to finish it off. Thanks for being awesome!
I like to wrap those homebuilt wheels in packaging tape to prolong the life. After flying on a road, the wheels can get shredded pretty fast. The tape also creates a flat surface and acts almost like a ski so you don't have the wheel catching on crabbed landings.
Ah man, I got beaten to it on the "rear hole" gag! Keep it up guys, I would love to see some micro/indoor scratch build/rubber band plane or foam glider to rc conversion suff in the show.
Hobby lobby foamboard with the shiny paper only costs $2.50 which is barely any more but it is so much stronger and stiffer and weighs the same, i also for putting the templates on the foamboard like to use spray adhesive on the board, let it sit for 3 minutes then stick the paper template on to the board and it will stay while cutting but you just grab a corner and pull It up before assembling your plane.
Josh, your the MAN bro!!!! You can't never get enough tips and tricks. :-) Thanks for ALL y'all's hard, dedicated time and work that y'all put into the RC Community. May GOD bless y'all..!!
A tip I found that works great on hot glue or epoxy sticking to your work surface. Lay a sheet or strip of parchment paper on the glue joint. When the glue cures, it will not stick. You have a clean smooth joint.
Hey guys love the site and the youtube videos. What an inspiration!!!! I have a background in automotive spare parts and engineering and I am currently in the process of building a 2 metre (6'6") wide x 1 metre (3'3") out of foam, however being so large internal bracing was needed. I found the skewers to be excellent but for areas that needed a little bit more I used the metal strips out of wiper blade inserts (google wiper blade metal insert - images) to be fantastic
Also I use packing tape on the inside and outside of the fuse to add streingth to wear the dowls go through. And I line the area wher the power pod slides to make it slide easier.
lol great comment Mike B. And these were some awesome tips. I love building and modifying my planes and a few of these tips have already helped me a lot. Thanx Flite Test.
You guys do great work! your videos are informational and entertaining which is awesome. I cant believe you dont have any classic beginner / trainer planes in your line up. Im talkin a Cub or Cessna, that would be awesome! I am also eagerly anticipating the glider.
Hey make the weels rounded easly attach the again to the original pop (not too tight) and pin it to a driller, then you take some sand paper and send it while is moving, it will make your weel faster, smoother, lighter and after some paint look like a scale weel , please say hello to the brazilian fans if you read this!
5 min epoxy works very well however it does take as it says about 5 mins to start to cure off. Mix it up in small amounts, place the epoxy on both surfaces to be glued (very thinly), after about 3 min place the parts together and hold for about another 3 min .After 25 min it will have set enough for you to go flying & is stronger than hot glue. It can also be sanded and shaped..Little trick, 5 min epoxy & foam powder(from sanding foam) when combined make an extremely strong & hard filler or glue.
I split the bamboo skewer in two and glue each half to the LE of the wing and tail you can also bend the bamboo half around curves like the rudder of the dr1
the aerosol could react badly with foam. You can do it but you have to be very careful. Also it is possible to de-can spray paints and use them in an airbrush.
Guys, I know you have been harassed by some folks. Don't let this bother you, to those who perish the preaching of the gospel is foolishness. I very much appreciate your videos and the faith in Christ. Keep your faith clear for everyone. Just look at how God has blessed Duck Dynasty family for refusing to bend to the will of the world.
Hi Josh, How about using Thompson's Waterproofing spray on the foam board. It is water resistant and doesn't discolor your foam. It is really good to waterproof your foam wheels. Ron
Yeah, it should work, the video i saw that he successfully did it on was a foamy. So it is possible you just have to be far enough away and light enough. Why not use the wax (minwax?) they showed in another video. modelers us the same stuff and it works well to protect paint as well as from moisture. Is Adam's covered on both sides with paper?
Fantasctic Video.. I love buidling planes.. and this will help me for sure.. Just a request - could yougive me some ideas for making push rods at home using stuff available instead of buying them online?
Loved the last two tips, though the first few all seem like the same tip. Also, wouldn't it be just as easy to use Popsicle sticks instead of cutting up gift cards? I would love tips using whole gift cards though.
I'd love to see if you can do a plane/copter like the batwing from the Batman Arkham City game. It appears to have a rotor in each wing, then two directional rotors in the tail. I'm guessing it would be great for VTL, but not sure if it would be something you could actually steer. Can it be done?
I have calc that the RTF would be around 6kg and I am prepared to fore go speed for time. I have added internal bracing to the wings in the form of plasterers external (just google it) As well as using bbq skewers and the metal inserts from wiper blades. strength wise the wing can handle just about anything but it is the prop/motor/esc/battery combo that is giving me trouble. Maybe I am dreaming to big but want to get as close as possible. Thnks for the reply any comments appreciated.
FT help with Depron??? I have just spent a happy hour cutting out the FT Flyer from Depron, which is really cheap here. Good results after abandoning the fold joints for eg. the power pod. Without the paper facing component and with the extra problem of it being slightly thicker, 6mm, things were in danger of getting nasty. Any helpful suggestions would be very helpful to us over here in the UK.
I´m confronted with that problem, too. What I´m going to do is slightly change the plans in advance to make sure everything fits with different material. Thankfully due to clever usage of A and B style folds there isn´t really much to adjust. I´ll do the folds with clear packaging tape and measure the gaps between the pieces with thin strips of scrap foam that are just as wide as the material thick.
Skyliner04s Frustrated, I ended up putting a more lengthy explanation of my thinking on the FT Forum, I think I titled it 'Depron in the UK', I think the search engine leaves somewhat to be desired... forum.flitetest.com/showthread.php?8217-Depron-in-the-UK&highlight=Depron might get you there. The main thing is to keep exterior dimensions the same, but watch out for bulkheads cos they will have to be smaller.
Richard Haynes comes a bit late, but what I've done is to cover one side of my depron plate with plastic adhesive and also one can cover it with the color u want..
I also have a question if thats ok...........what is the best way to determine prop size and motor kv and amps, the wing weights in at 2.2kg (4.8lb) and I have designed it to be a twin counter rotating motors in a pusher prop configuration. My goal is to be able to achieve as high a speed as possible (would love to see 200km/h (125 mph) although this maybe unrealistic however a flight time of at least 1 hour is more important. Can anyone help???
Flitetest . Please help me to solve my problem if my tricopter. My tricopter's servo keeps breaking and the best thing is it breaks even when I don't fly it . It's a hobby king hextronic servo
Sorry but i don't think you can go 200 km/h with a selfmade 2m foamie. Also you can't get 1 hour flighttime if it weights 2,2 kg but only has 2m wingspan. Maybe recalculate ? :)
I love when people use simple every day items and the idea of a pop rivet is awesome.
You guys are so awesome. You inspired me (a kid) to get into the hobby. I did my first scratch build and I'm now flying the blade MSRX
Thanks Josh. The tip for aligning the control surfaces with Popsicle stick was great. Flite test is awesome.
The gift card around the hole idea is great. I'll be adding that tonight to my power pods.

you guys are great! Starting my first scratch build this weekend

The wheel tip was awesome, not only is it more secure, it also looks cooler

The magnets on popsicle sticks was gold.
It's nice you mention the origin of the tips, as always great job Flite Test !!!

Great idea on using the magnets on the p sticks. I used to use a small plastic clamps

Great job Josh.
I think it would be awesome if you could make a swappable seaplane, like the Icon A-5.
2 years later, your hopes have been answered with the FT Otter
Great idea with the pop rivet!

yay so im not the only one that that would like to see you guys make a trainer plane

Ron
Love your videos guys. Keep up the good work.
The Range sells it for £10 for 3 sheets. Made a great Flightest F22 with it. Also a brilliant RCPowers Extra 300. Give emboth a go they are great fun
You guys are simply awesome.
What speed build kit handles best in the wind? And awesome videos keep up the good work!
Please do a review on the parkzone visionaire, thanks for the great tips as well.
Thanks Josh, awesome tips.
What a wealth of great ideas!
You guys should venture into building ultra micro swappables! Share the plans!
I could really use a heavy gauge landing gear wire tutorial. The FT Storch was a nightmare!
You guys should do a video on how to wire an aircraft

Josh; Thanks for the Video !
where can i find this depron ?
plz
where? or foam board??
Great tips. Thanks!!!
Thanks as always. Your the best..
Could u guys design a rubber powered glider, something simple, a quick a fun build for the weekend
it might react badly with the foam, but what about the paper on top of foam board? Might work!

You owe me a new coffe, man!
I laughed so explosive that i blew snot in my cup. :(
Thanks for the tip Denver! (c/o FT :) )
Do you sell the wheels seperate? If not you should. I know I can't cut a round wheels from foam board. Just a thought.
The dollar tree stuff I have is paper on both sides, yeah. And I never thought about minwax.
Could you do a review on a good cheap rc helicopter?
cool video ,, thanx for the tip ,, South Africa
please make a landing gear for our quadcopters!!!

i wonder what rust oleom's(rustoleumdotcom) never wet stuff would do to foam would it make it waterproof? stronger?
Great video as always and we can never get enough tips and tricks video's.
Magnetic popsicles - very crafty!

I wold love to build your planes but I can't get paper plated foamand kits are expencive+shipping and I just love cutting so got some ideas?
what is the name of the foamboard you guys use? and does anyone know a equivilent for it in holland?
you should play it in fast forward just for kicks
Could I use my pushrods as landing gear?
What is the car box in the backround?
What happened to the garage setting?
U don't even need pop ribit ... You can cut thin pen or pen Refills...
nice tip :)
try different glues and let us know! just gotta watch for the glue that eats at the foam...
Awesome
is coat hanger wire coiled any good for a nose wheel
It is not. My friend used a coat hanger for landing gear and immediately damaged the landing gear on the first landing
The one thing that gets me when using a hot glue gun is the glue webs, man I hate those things, anyone got a tip on how to eliminate those?
ft 3d is a speed build kit
I hope you guys get a way to sell your speedbuild kits cheap in Europe mabye using your fans or sponsers
I am starting to miss Josh guys.
Hola chicos les mando un gran saludo .
how thick is that foam board
+andrea montanari 4.7 mm I assume if they are using their own material (they sell this dollar-tree foamboard on their website)
Make a kit for a 3d plane like an extra 300 or a yak
I hate it when i wear out my rear hole. lol
josh didnt really sound himself today, dont know if that's just me who thinks that
2:42 "...You will probably wear out your rear hole after a while..." Oh man thats disgusting :P
👍👍
The HobbyKing Align clones are good.
Check my vid.
There is lots of work to get them to fly sweetly however, it's easiest to go mcpx - 300x route.
