hi brooks- the chain in my friends air head has no link to dismantle it &hence to get access to the bearing or the sprocket is not an easy task - i am trying to use a 3 legged puller grinding 2 of its legs in order to align then same on the sprocket as only 1 leg is resting on the sprocket & 2 legs rest on the chain over the sprocket- its quite tricky to remove sprockets of airheads that have no links on the chain !!!!

Hi Rahul, you have to cut the the timing chain off to replace it. I use bolt cutters to cut the chain. This link shows how I do that work on the earlier bikes that have the continuous (no master link) chains.

      I hope that helps you.

    Hi very good,
How many miles on this bmw?please

Hi Christophe. This bike had 83,000+ miles when I bought it. I put a bit less than 1,000 miles on it before I parked it. It sat about two years before I started to rebuild it as I decided to rebuild a 1977 RS I found.

Hey Brooks, or anybody else, what are the Torque settings for the timing chain retaining bolts when re-fitting? My Haynes manual does not specify. Thanks in advance

Hi Adam, I'm not sure what bolt you are referring to. There are no "timing chain retaining bolts" that I'm aware of. Can you restate your question, perhaps with a part number, to be explicit?

@@BrooksAirheadGarage sorry about that! Timing chain cover bolts is what I was meant to say

@@Adam28Fitz I torque them in three stages, in INCH-pounds, NOT foot-pounds.
I torque in a cross-wise pattern at 35 INCH-Lbs, 70 INCH-Lbs. Then I use a heat gun and heat the timing cover around the nose bearing (outside perimeter of the front main seal) until it's hot to the touch. Then I torque to 72 INCH-Lbs.
The reason to heat the cover before the final torque is to ensure the nose bearing is seated in the boss on the inside of the cover and is not bound up. I hope that helps.
