Signal on the left: 2 pairs of WRRS 8 inch lights.
Signal on the right: 2 pairs of Federal Signal 8 inch lights and a General Signals Type 2 electronic bell.
After catching W048, I thought I had missed Q573, so I tried to get on down to Park City to beat it there, missing Q574 and Q142 in the process. However, it turned out that Q573 hadn't left Louisville yet, so I made my way back north along the line a bit, where I found out Q573 was leaving Louisville, and stumbled upon this nice crossing little just outside of Upton, which I decided to set-up at. And after just a bit of waiting, Q573 started calling signals near me, so I started recording. Not long after, it came flying through with an ES44AH leading a pair of ES40DCs, and the chase was on!
Also, after the train passes, you can hear my scanner complaining of low batteries along with the defect detector located next to this crossing.
This crossing is quite a nice one, featuring a nice older pair of gateless L&N signals at it. It appears that these were originally installed by the L&N back in the 40s of 50s with TPC equipment (and likely a WRRS mechanical bell), but in the 1960s, the signal on the far side was replaced with a newer one. Then, in the 1970s, the closer signal had at least its lights upgraded to the current ones.
The crossing probably remained largely unchanged for a few decades after that (aside from the mechanical bell here possibly being replaced once or twice) until sometime in the 2000s, when the bell was replaced with the current General Signals Type 2 e-bell. Since then, no major changes have occured which, which, IMHO, is quite nice to see. Old 8 inch gateless installs like this are always a nice find, so I'm glad to have been able to record this guy.
