He and many others always blamed the title of the D Day Doggers for their silence because they were mocked because they were not at D Day.
My grandfather was also at Monte Cassino and he never once talked of it. I think mum may have tried as he got older so that some memories might be recorded but he immediately shut down. She never pushed him, none of us would ever do that, but it’s interesting to learn that this was also your experience in your family.
