Hail / Wet Microburst - Olton, TX - May 6, 2008

  • Storm chasers Michael Laca, Jim Leonard and Ray Walker intercepted a multi-cellular complex of supercell thunderstorms near Olton, Texas (northwest of Lubbock), on the afternoon of May 6, 2008. The initial storm (southwest of Olton) was relatively small but developed classic LP supercell features including a highly tilted mesocyclone, beautifully backlit by the sun.
    The second storm evolved into a large HP supercell that prodcued a small and very brief funnel south of Olton and large hail in the fields to the north of the town.
    The last storm approached Olton from the south with Level 2 radar data indicating a strong rotational couplet and four inch hail. As the storm neared Olton an extremely ominous, and rapidly moving hail shaft/microburst developed and moved northward across the town.

    I unfortunately experienced a wet microburst here in south Louisiana a few years ago. It took down a big oak that was next to the house I was renting, which took the power line with it (luckily it fell the way it did or it would've taken out the house. My landlord at the time said he had ridden out every hurricane, but that event actually scared him.

      That can be really intense! Some having tornado-like wind speeds, certainly enough for dangerous flying projectiles.

      Up until Perhaps several years ago, possibly 10 or so years ago, I'd never even heard of the term "Microburst". However, since then, I've heard that term more and more frequently, and then:
      BOOM!
      On Wednesday, July 6, 2022, less than 2 weeks ago, I experienced a strong Microburst, as it passed over our City (Staunton, Virginia). At first, the Microburst hit us from the West, and blew over a bunch of Trees. I'd estimate it's wind speeds to have been between 60-70 miles an hour, or more. Then, for a few seconds, the wind stopped...and then, the winds picked back up very sharply, this time from the East. The wind speeds were at least as strong as the first part of that Microburst... maybe even stronger!
      After the Storm passed. There were trees, seemingly by the thousands, that had been knocked down during that Storm.
      It's been 11 days now, and while things are basically back to normal, there are still downed trees in some areas, that still need to be removed.
      Ah .. such is life. One minute everything's good, and the next minute-Nope!

    Wow, that's a real nice microburst. I've never seen or knew about this new phenomenon as well but i was introduced with microbursts in the same year like you did, only one month later in my living town. 2008 In The Netherlands, with hail as large as golf balls which destroy cars, roofs and windows :O and a big river down the road from a hilll side and very heavy winds. Then i learned about microbursts as well. It was even on the national news and the weather forecast. We have had more microbursts in other cities and villages as well in different years.
    In 2019 we have had even a real F2 tornado in the dark evening, which has destroyed homes, trees and other buildings. Such tornadoes are very very rare in our little country. I was really surprised the next day, like WHAT!? A real tornado? Here? It was also in the local and national news. The aftermath was very clear, also seen in a video from above. A long path of destroying, mostly trees, forrests and landscape. I have felt the outer winds of the tornado, we noticed the day after. One person has a picture of the tornado thanks to the lightning.
    I hope we have more storms to come. 2020 was a very boring year when it comes to big heavy thunderstorms. Only one close lightning, but mostly sunnny, sunny sunny and very dry. I hope 2021 become much better.

    Excellent video in every way. I like the quality of the camera used the rainex you fellas used on the windshield unlike 70% of the chasers out there. It increased the quality of footage and safety tenfold. Also, wild footage. That definitely did not look safe at all. Sinister as hell.

    I am guessing there is no time lapse in this video and that those clouds actually really are moving/bubbling up and morphing very quickly. I experienced my first wet microburst in Feb 2020, when the biggest most intense storm cell Perth, Aus had ever seen formed north of the city and proceeded to move directly north to south, smashing the entire city over the course of 45 minutes. Perth is only 20 miles wide (Coast on the west, scarp and hills to the east), but north to south it is contiguous development for close to 100 miles. This cell was pretty much as wide as the city, and got wider in its path south, but in doing so, lost its intensity, eventually breaking into a line of smaller N-S storm cells. It was a spectacular and intense 45 minutes, with more than a few microbursts produced. The core of one was about 2 miles from where I live. Scary stuff.

Being am a weather enthusiast, I would be very fortunate to be able to perform these feats and tasks that you guys do. However, I do realize and understand that what you do can be and is very dangerous. But I still would love to be able to do this kind of work. Those clouds off in the distance at the beginning and towards the end when you were stopped looked awesome! I love seeing towering storm clouds such as those. Cumulonimbus clouds, along with the anvil shape on top, are my most favorite ones! Great video guys! Keep up the good work as you normally do!

    Me and my sis was on our balcony and suddenly this grey wall of DOOM comes towards us and we raced inside and shut the door and as soon as we did, there was five minutes of hail and wind and it was scary.
    it killed the power, downed tree's, bent power poles/hydro poles, and left us wondering WTF hit us!?

    Great rainbow! Christmas Eve driving in NC, calling for heavy rains, tornado I later learned. Rain had stopped 40 minutes before. Then suddenly, at night, we saw what looked like a tidal wave coming at up from above at about 45 degrees. Looked just like a huge wave. Was not a drop of rain before that thick mass of a wave advancing towards us. The closest thing I saw was like a video of a giant rain bomb video in Tulsa. It poured a while then gradually subsided. Contents of trunk were soaked. We were surprised car was not washed away. Any thoughts> (Could not see sky in distance as it was dark.) Thank you.

    It's too bad these guys couldn't find some type of shelter, parking garage, or any structure that would protect their car from hail damage. This would have been an awesome storm to capture on video. What's for damn sure is that storms like this don't hit the Chicagoland area, which is a bummer. This type of incredible storm makes the strongest storms that occur in Lake County, Indiana look sick.

    apperently you have never been through a wet microburst. That thing they didnt know what it was was a microburst, and they can dump up to 2 inches of rain (or more) in a few minutes and have large hail. We get these types of storms in Arizona, mostly dry microbursts, but sometimes the wet type. They are created by extreme down drafts.

  • @hebneh
    @hebneh 14 ปีที่แล้ว

    That curtain of hail reminds me of the videos of the thunderstorm (bearing low-level tornadoes) which hit New York City in Sept. 2010. Both storms moved amazingly fast, and (as you hear in this video) both looked very "ominous". The difference was that the New York storm moved over a city of millions of people, instead of being out on the plains like this one.

    Do you even know what Graupel is???? It's compacted balls of snow (in shape of cones or small balls) which btw falls in temps below 55 degrees and is much softer than traditional hail.
    It's under microburst, because that's what they were taping towards the end and they moved out of the way to avoid getting blasted with larger hail.

  • @Torn80cj
    @Torn80cj 14 ปีที่แล้ว

    I have done the same thing in Oklahoma. Hail like that would be a nasty situation, especially when the wind is giving it an extra boost of speed. I got hit by a couple of 2.5 inch hailstones, but they didn't break the glass, I turned around and got out of it. The storm was still growing and had not formed the anvil yet. It eventually would spawn a huge tornado, but the road I was on messed me up so I didn't get to see the tornado. I should have set up further east.

    This sort of thing doesn't happen in Northwest Indiana. Not in Lake County anyway.

    Where was this microburst? Title doesn't accurately describe the video.

      The wet microburst is the dense hail/precipitation core that is seen moving rapidly northward across the town between 4:03 and 5:00, towards the end of this clip. That core produced hail up to 4-inches in diameter and winds in excess of 60mph within Olton.
