      @@johnmartin7158 My RAV4 Hybrid Limited came with 18. I got tired of the ride and bought 17 inch aftermarket rims when time for new tires. Better ride. This forcing of large wheels with low profile tires on consumers has gotten ridiculous. Example: the new Crown Signia starts at 19 and goes to 21. Ironically the Signia does not come with a spare, which you are more likely to need with low profile tires! On most cars now, if you want a higher trim you are forced to have 20 or 21 inch rims... ludicrous.

      @@tastyorange I’m on the same page as you. My RAV4 Adventure Hybrid came with 19s as part of the trim level. I kinda like travelling on the roughest roads around NZ, so yes I think 17s make sense. Also the tyres on the adventure are pretty damn noisy. I hope like heck that the new gen RAV4 will have a spare. I’m a bit old school.

    Excellent explanation on tires and wheels. I may also add that the wider lower profile tires, with the exception of more rigid sidewall run flats are more prone to flats/rim damage when hitting potholes or parallel parking along curbs.

    Your reviews are probably the best I’ve seen; you cover every aspect of driving and ownership that 90% of drivers care about! In this video you compared a hybrid to a gas engine vehicle and recommended the hybrid for resale value as well as other reasons.I never hear anyone discuss battery life for hybrids. Hybrids have been around for decades now, what is the life expectancy of batteries in a hybrid (years and miles).
    Thanks

      @andreaspencer9813 20 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา +1

      Thanks so much Dave, we appreciate the kind words, glad you are enjoying our reviews. Hybrid batteries can last between 100,000 miles to 200,000 miles. Most manufacturers have a warranty that is 8 or 10 years for the battery. For example Toyota Canada offers a hybrid battery warranty of 10 years or 240,000 km. In the US, it's 10 years or 150,000 miles. The hybrid battery in a RAV4 is only 1.6 kWh, it's pretty small so if you had to replace it, it would be a lot less than a PHEV or EV. A RAV4 PHEV has an 18.1 kWh battery and EV batteries can range between 58 kWh to above 120 kWh. The Toyota bZ4X AWD model has a 72.8 kWh battery. Hope that helps.

    Sedan or hatchback that's fun to drive with good mpg? Prius awd. The new one, especially with the extra power that awd brings, is surprisingly fun to drive with only one trade off. Interior space is small. I drove my '23 From Ca. to the East coast, up to Montreal and around the great lakes to home in Southern Ca. 3 1/2 weeks, 8400 miles, one oil change in Boston. I really like the corolla in either gas or hybrid form but the new prius is so good that I strongly recommend it.

BUT I just can't go for the standard 20 inch wheels on the SEL (which would be my choice). There just isn't enought air cushion between the wheel and the potholes to make me happy with the purchase.

I realize that some vehicles the height can be changed so then a range could be provided. Right now, I'm looking at going from a Forester to the Outback but the seat height is lower but I don't know how low without going to the dealer for a test drive 90 minutes away. Hybrid 2.5T is already made, there are TH-cam videos with it, under the hood and driving, but it’s in korean and not official yet. It’s 329hp (335bhp), 2.5 turbo smartstream mated to 6 speed auto, but unlike 1.6T hybrid, this time it’s using 2 electric motors, 1,65kW battery and estimated 7.9L/100km combined fuel economy.

    New Job - order the Toyota and hope it takes like 6 months to make sure that job pans out. I say go a year if you can as you are just "readjusting" the cashflow to put yourself back to paycheque to paycheque living but with higher risk if you job is not a long term "working out" (pun a bit intended). Regardless - calculate the "all in cost" impact (insurance, gas, payments, lost investment if applicable) and until that car comes in whether 6 months or 12 months - pull that into a savings account and if you miss one payment or stop doing it fully - that vehicle hopefully will not look as shiny and maybe not so "shiny light" options or the current one will look not all so compromising. I'm just saying .. learning the hard way costs a lot of years of stress.

    Sorry Zack Lexus NX350H owner here and as available on the current NX when you move up to the more expensive models they go from an 18 inch rim to a 20 inch rim but both are same width of 235 mm, they don't get wider, the tire thickness or height to width ratio goes from a 60 series to a 50 series. So the thickness or height on the 18 inch rim is 60% of the width and for the 20 inch it's 50% of the width. So a 235 50 R 20 is the same width as a 235 60 R 18 the width doesn't change it's still 235 mm wide but the sidewall height is less for the larger metal wheel option of 20 inches.

    • @Motormouth...
      @Motormouth...  14 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา

      Obviously, Lexus designed the hybrid to run on narrower tires for optimal fuel economy. In the tire industry it is called +1 sizing. As you go up in size the ratio, or the width increases. as a rule but rules can be broken.

    • @re-tiredsteve5195
      @re-tiredsteve5195 3 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา

      Well, no the width doesn’t change at all. It is still 235 millimetres wide. I have snows that are 18” and summers are 20” and they are both the same width, 235. The objective with the plus one sizing is that you move up on rim diameter BUT you keep the tread width the same so you don’t decrease or increase the contact patch the tire makes with the road, so traction is not affected nor does it negatively affect your operation of traction control or abs functions thus keeping your braking distance relatively unchanged.
      Going down to a 225 mm width would be smaller by 10 mm so in that situation you would need to ensure that the overall tire diameter would not change or speedometer reading will be off

    low profile tires and large rims are a biggest scam in automotive industry. anything lower than 55 profile will not give you any benefit unless you are on a track (which you are not, because your car can not handle track driving) and you just loose in comfort, gas mileage and paying more just for the looks. What's especially annoying for me, is when a manufacturer will put low profile tires for the high trims, which I totally don't want to have. Also low profile tires are much easier to damage (both tire and rim). I actually have discarded few car models just because of these when I was buying a new car in 2022.

      I would have agreed with you 20 years ago. Low and ultra low profile tires can provide exceptional handling. High profile tires can provide sloppy handling to the point of being unsafe. Whether or not comfort is affected and to what extent if it is affected depends on the vehicle's suspension design. My Porsche Cayenne, which is about 7 model years newer than the one Zack and Andrea are sitting in, came with 21 inch wheels with 40 series tires front and 35 series tires back. Its ride on these wheels and tires is less jarring and much more comfortable than that of my plush riding Lexus LS which was the last model to come with 16 inch wheels and 60 series tires. The Cayenne's air suspension may help moderate the ride although it still rides firmly. Also, larger wheels are more likely to "span" potholes instead of dropping into them causing the tire to compress against the wheel as it hits the edge of the pothole as it exits it. Plus, lower profile tires are usually also wider which can help improve braking and safety. The downside of larger lower profile tires is the cost.

    Many people no longer care much about fuel efficiency, some are even proud of how much fuel they burn. These are the same people who say they can’t afford groceries or cigarettes and happily block EV charging stations.

    How can we message the auto industry that large wheels only have down sides and have no place on the average car or SUV.
    Getting a sports car, yeah, big wheels, fat, low profile tire will help it to handle better.

    On the topic of Genesis/hybrids: I recently picked up a new 2025 G80, and during the purchase, I chatted with the dealership manager and my sales associate about the future of the brand. Both of them indicated that in internal communications, the ‘tentative’ timeline for introducing hybrids will be 2027/2028 models. Hopefully they remain committed.

    The problem with VW is it's a basic vehicle with luxury repair cost. Definitely don't keep it past about 60,000 miles. Aggressive depreciation doesn't help.

  • @free_your_mind2216
    @free_your_mind2216 18 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา

    Car companies and customers want to put the biggest and heaviest rims possible and wider tires on the smallest cars to make the car 'look nice', this significantly degrades ride quality, increases road noise, especially on poor road surfaces, increases unspring mass and to fix the problem they created in the first place they put sophisticated 'adaptive suspension', bigger brake pads, brake calipers which further increases costs and weight to make up for the compromised ride quality. Now only if car companies and customers weren't so stupid we could have a nice ride on most cars with just 16-17 inch wheels, higher profile tires and there is absolutely no need for adaptive suspension and all those silly gimmicks that increases overall costs of the car. Unless you are a professional racer who drives on the track all the time at the absolute limits there is no need for bigger rims and wider tires.

  • @mtbmike1328

    Had to google why low profile tires get worse gas mileage. Because they are wider = increased rolling resistance = more energy to move forward.

    • @plohish1337
      @plohish1337 17 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา

      nope, that mostly is incorrect. Low profile tires comes with large rims that weight more and that extra weight is giving you worse gas mileage. Unsprung mass has very big effect on required energy.
      Low profile tire doesn't necessarily mean they are wider, sometimes you can find low profile tire with same width, but mass will be heavier.

    I can't disagree with you about the Toyota RAV4; it has so much going for it... except Toyota's miserable CVT driving experience. Drive a Honda CRV and a Toyota RAV4 back to back. What a significant difference! Honda's CVT is a pleasure to drive.

      Regular RAV4 has a normal geared transmission, the hybrid has an E-CVT, it doesn’t have a belt, it has an electric motor in the casing, two geared cogs that fit between that electric motor and the one attached to the engine. I have driven many of them and Toyota’s would be more reliable.

    If you have a bad back or osteoporosis don't buy a subcompact with small wheels, you'll be shaken to pieces but not stirred. I'm remined of a friend who drove his mini into a pot hole and lost his front tire and front end. Bigger wheels can hop curbs and can usually span huge pot holes. Balloon tires make your drive bouncy but don't give you a smooth ride. The answer is electronic stabilization shocks and extra padded seating that you find in luxury vehicles. Think about it, your taking your mother to the airport, your going to hire a limo to get her there.

    Regarding VW. They might make good cars. But honestly after diesel gate and the sleezy things they did to me and other customers to do EVERYTHING in their power to not fix our cars, I dunno …. 🤷🏾‍♀️ idunno buy with caution. ⛔️ I literally cried during that experience I was left with a car worth nothing in 2015 with no way to sell it … what they did was not ok. I know others who haven’t had that experience don’t have the context to sympathize but understand VW hurt a lot of families with diesel gate … a lot of us. 😞
