      That's why he chose "mirror" instead of "two way". Which mean backup drive always have contents of the first drive. Even you delete contents from the first drive, backup drive will always have them.
      When you press the button it copies new files from first drive to backup drive. Guess what it does if first drive is empty? Taking space of your ram by running at back ground thats all.

    I would recommend "update" mode for most people, because this protects against accidental deletions. If you accidentally delete something and connect the drive to restore it, the file will be removed from the backup drive, if "mirror" mode is selected, but "update" mode will never delete files from the backup drive.
    Of course this means the drive will slowly fill up with stuff you no longer want, and when it gets full you must delete stuff manually (or wipe the whole thing and back everything up again).
    I use this mode and think this is a small price to pay for the extra security of your files. But I use a 3.5" external hard drive which is available in large capacities. Maybe it is not so suitable for those with 2.5" hard drives as I haven't seen a > 2 TB 2.5" drive.
    This also allows the backup external drive to be used with 2 or more computers without problems :)

    Hello matt! I recently did this project on my PC now that i have a new mainboard with sata hot swap support. I used a Molex female to sata male adapter and just cutted the wire for 12v (the yellow).SO it works also with only a normal switch as long you are using a 3.5 inch drive. Many thanks for the nice content.

    Just wondering:
    Can I use the hardware part of this video to mount a switch which chooses either one of my two hard drives to boot?
    I mean, I have windows and linux on my computer and I would absolutely love a hardwired switch to choose the OS before I boot the system. I want to power on the system not get grumpy at the grub if it selected the operating system I didn't intend to use after taking a leak during the start-up of the system.
    I know it's physically possible, but I wonder if windows allows this (linux probably does anyway). It probably does since windows can't read linux partitions so it won't know anything is missing, but you'll never know.
    I know I should be careful not to flick the switch while my computer is on because hotswapping a drive with a running OS would most likely not just kill my computer, but also me and my family once the drives find out who was responsible for this.
    Maybe I should connect it to the reset button so if I accidently flip the switch while the pc is on, it doesn't crash, it just forced restarts in the other OS.

    • @DIYPerks

      Totally possible - just use a double throw switch with two poles (DP DT).

    The program with your installer works great.
    For those who are using Windows8/8.1 or Windows10 you cant find the startup folder directly in the search option and in the taskmanager you cant put it in.
    You have to search for "run" or press Windows-Key+R and type in %appdata% then go to roaming/microsoft/windows/startmenu/programs/startup and put a shortcut of the batchfile in there (do not move or delete the original Batch-File!).
    It worked fine for me on Windows 10 Pro 64bit.

    I would hesitate to say the hard drive is protected from electrical failures. If a PSU failed spectacularly enough, it could still arc through the switch to the hard drive and short it out. The same is especially true of more intense surges, particularly lightning strikes.
    I guess the overall point is, the only truly secure backup is unplugged and off-site.

    • @mozzjones6943
      @mozzjones6943 9 ปีที่แล้ว +21

      There is no true secure backup, The best you can do is have many backups to give your data every chance of long term survival.
      Because anything can happen to any hard drive / SSD, Even if you make it out of totally indestructible deep sea proof material the drive will eventually die of life expectancy or something technical might go wrong inside.

    • @Sam-fy8mt
      @Sam-fy8mt 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      That's why an UPS is always good to have, no intense surges and you have time to properly turn off your computer before there's no more battery on the UPS.

    • @2112jonr
      @2112jonr 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Not completely true. If you're mirroring across sites with a two phase commit, you're guaranteed data integrity at both ends, as it's effectively a single atomic transaction. The chances of both being wiped out simultaneously and not yourself are then so close to zero that they can be considered to be secure, unless you've a need for a PC in a post apocalyptic world. At that point, who cares. Even with something as basic as a Synology NAS that's affordable home technology, if you've two geographically remote sites and a decent internet link between them.

    • @MeepChangeling
      @MeepChangeling 6 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      Unplugged and off site you say? I get a wrench and beat you with it till you tell me where it is and give me the keys to access the building. Nothing is secure dude.

    • @TAP7a
      @TAP7a 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Which is why discussing whether something is or isn't secure as a binary is a waste of everyone's time, and the only valuable conversations in that space are whether someone's data is sufficiently secure for their needs and budget, and how it can be made more so. The 80:20 rule makes its usual appearance too, as the conversation should always be about which 20% of the maximum amount of work someone could do produces 80% of the desired outcome

      Well, this might not be the so called rocket science, but nevertheless it requires specialized tools and some manual skills - while the same end result could be achieved with just using a proper software and its configuration
      Although yes: the one undisputed advantage of such system is the additional layer of security, i.e. disconnection of the disk from the power grid. But at the same time this also creates a drawback of having to remember to push the button after doing any kid of important work or new data acquisition [so there goes the full automation of the process being performed totally in the background]

  • @fred_derf

    Very slick. The only thing I'd add is to say that you should dismount the HD before turning it off, that will flush any data in the write cache and won't risk corrupting the drive by it being turned off during a write operation.

  • @frarugi87
    @frarugi87 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Two suggestions:
    1) personally I'd prefer to use heat shrink tubing for a better wiring, also on the button
    2) SATA 2.5" drives use only the 5V Supply, so if you choose a 2.5" instead of a 3.5" drive you can use any switch (even SP ones)

      I haven't tried it but you should be able to create a .bat file that runs "format C:" (replace with the drive letter that you want to quick erase). To securely erase the data though you need a secure erase program (most of which can be run from the command line so just find out the commands and put them into a .bat file.
      The problem with a secure erase though is that the computer needs time to physically overwrite the old data otherwise it can be recovered by certain programs. (If you use an ssd then all you need to overwrite is the file location database because ssd's are inherently fragmented.)
      Anyway, I take no responsibility though if you accidentally erase your main hard drive.

      I suppose I'm more talking about (in a semi-serious way) a physical erasing mechanism, one that might put the drive beyond use but ultimately scrambles/destroys the data such tat it can never be recovered. You see in movies, hackers dumping drives in toasters etc but really my requirement would be that the drive contents be erased totally and as quick as possible.

      In that case just have the button attached to a controller that controls a drill to drill a bunch of holes in the hard drive and then sandblast the drive through the holes.
      Or just put the drive inside a compact crusher that crushes the drive when you press the button. These aren't complicated, especially the second option

    Guys, RAIDs should not be used for backing up data. Go to the 8:08 mark where he explains the benefits of having a backup drive that's not constantly connected to power. RAIDs are used for redundancy purposes (R = Redundant). They're useful in companies/businesses where if a drive dies or fails, the backup drive can continue to be accessible and workable without any interruption. Basically, that way companies/businesses don't have to manually unplug and replug drives if one fails.

  • @GlorytoTheMany
    @GlorytoTheMany 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    It is nice and fun, though I think scheduled backups are easier. It is a good idea to physically disconnect the drive from the power source, however the risks of not doing so (i.e. power surge or ransomware) are minimal. Hard drives can be put into standby mode even when they are connected, in case you are worried about the noise and power consumption when the drive is unused. To hide the data from malicious software, simply unmounting the drive should be enough. I think you would be better off with Linux though - it has all the nice tools for scheduling and doing backups without the need for 3rd-party software. For example, you can use cron/anacron for scheduling backups, use rsync or btrfs-send to do the backup, then umount the backup file system, and finally, hdparm -y turns off the hard drive when it is unused. Though I understand that having a one-press button is fun, so I appreciate the work you put into it.

    • @DIYPerks
      @DIYPerks  9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Philippe52 Yes, it's fine. External HDD enclosures wouldn't have hard switches on them if it wasn't.

    • @pcfreak1992
      @pcfreak1992 9 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      DIY Perks that's not quite true. External HDDs usually work with a USB-to-SATA controller that parks the HDD when the user stops accessing it and the system usually syncs all data immediately and doesn't keep some of it in the cache. If you hard-switch it off, that bit in the cache might become lost, which is definitely not desireable in a backup solution.

    • @DIYPerks
      @DIYPerks  9 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      pcfreak1992 Usually, perhaps, but there are plenty of commercial HDD enclosures out there that just use a physical switch to turn the HDD on and off, just like in the video. :) Besides, drives are designed to be able to write all their cache to the platters in the case of a power failure, so it's not too much of an issue. Any files that failed to be transferred (if for some reason the drive was to be turned off whilst the backup process was going on) they'd just be re-copied next time the backup is run.

    • @pcfreak1992
      @pcfreak1992 9 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      DIY Perks well since those commercial HDD enclosures utilize that mentioned USB controller and Windows (usually) doesn't use the cache on external drives, it is not a big deal, that's right. But if you use the drive internally then it's a different story, since there is no USB controller and Windows is actually using a cache for speed increase. And if the hard drive was writing on the file allocation table you might lose all info about all the stored files. And there is no way for a drive to write the cache to disk when it detects a power failure (some drives have caches up to 64 MB).
      If you are lucky nothing happens or only the last file becomes corrupt. If you aren't lucky then all files are gone and the drive possibly even needs to be re-formatted. The best way to work with this hardware solution is to manually deactivate the cache in Windows and wait for a few minutes until Windows manually parks the head (or maybe run a script which does that after the backup).
      In my opinion the last thing you wanna do is to let your backup drive do constant emergency parks. ;-)

    That whole button setup is unnecessary. You should always be backing up. It's easier to just connect a regular hard drive into the computer, install that software and have it running all the time. Then EVERY file you save or delete will ALWAYS be backed up with not additional effort.

    • @NadiraBarIdan
      @NadiraBarIdan 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      DoomFinger511 the problem is that if you have a Ransomware on your computer it will also encrypt your backed up files, but if your backup HD was powered off the Ransomware wouldn't do anything to your backup HD, so the button is not just to make you remember to backup your file, it's also giving you a layer of protection against Ransomware and other kind of viruses that destroy any data that is connected to your computer.

    Backing up to a hard drive which is INSIDE the computer is not useless, but it is pretty close! If something happens to the computer itself, be it a power surge or fire or a flood or whatever, both the main drive and the backup drive will die together. Backups should be stored on an external device, which is to be disconnected from the computer and stored in a different location, meaning another room or ideally not in the same building.

    • @DIYPerks
      @DIYPerks  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The point is that the drive is physically disconnected 98% of the time. This protects it from power surges, PSU failures, ransom ware etc. Pretty good for most people.

    This was really intriguing, until you told me that i needed to run another program on startup. I deliberately disable everything not imminently essential on startup, to speed up boot times and clear CPU. Guess i'll just stick to manual backups...

    Super cool project. Looks cool/fun to make. Not that usefull for me since i use a virtual desktop at work and at home i have only video games installed.(and i backup those saves automaticly software-based) You are the collest diy video maker on yt. I hope that your channel grows really big but plz dont turn into I_like_to_make_things. Bob is a hack who sold his channel out. Just keep it like how its now. (im not saying earning money from youtube is a bad thing but his vids. used to be as much fun as yours are now, not anymore)
    About data:
    data will get lost on a unpowered hdd. (even tho not running will be better on the short term, i will try to find the video where i got it from tomorrow if you are interested)

      +Stylo Monnik With a magnetic hard drive, data loss occurs slowly whether the drive is powered or not, the real concern is with the bearing in the motor seizing up if it isn't used for a few months. SSDs on the other hand do not lose data at all when power is applied, but likewise slowly lose it when unplugged.

      +Ryan Bright There are several options. A good one for beginners would be autohotkey. It could literally be one line of FileCopyDir, [source], [destination], [overwrite?0or1]. But of course you can add more over time to make it more powerful & complex.

    What if something happens and you loose a part of your data on your normal drive, and you want to get the data back from the back up drive. You can't just push the button and connect the drive because then the data you lost on the normal drive would also be removed from the back up drive...

    instead of leaving the program run on the background which i wont recommend, create a autorun config file in the backup disk to run the batch file automatically as you plugged in.

    Is there a little problem with the mirror mode? Look: I press the button and the backup is made. A little later I accidentally delete an important file. No big deal, I have it in the backup hard drive. But if I connect the drive for recovery the data, it will be automatically mirrored from the drive that doesn't have the file. You would say: Of course you have to disable the auto-backup, but you have to REALLY pay attention to this, otherwise the meaning of backup is not achieved. If someone wants to recovery the file right away, most people may not remember to do that... Maybe one of the others modes is safer.

    Hey DIY Perks, is it possible to reverse the data stream and make it so that every time you plug the hard drive in, it dumps all the data from that drive onto a similar folder. For instance if you wanted to make it so every time you plug in an sd card, it dumps all the picture files into a folder on your computer?
