Why Can't I Forgive Her?

  • This is a exceptional scene from the show Newsroom where the character Will is having a conversation with his psychiatrist. In the exchange, Will is asking why he can't forgive his former female companion who cheated on him. What his psychiatrist makes Will take notice of is something I find profound and connect with on so many levels.

Beautifully written and acted scene. And such a simple line....."you weren't rejected......you were betrayed".......than answers so many questions.

i know, 7 months, but wich questions have answers now? because he search for his way to be with her in harmony! thats why he wants to be able to forgive her, but he cant, it hurts him to much! i´ve love this szene, but the answer from the therapist means nothing less than, "let her go".....(in my opinion). but this he cant aswell! so for him, nothing changes even after this line
and i know well what this feeling means

@@JoshSweetvale this isnt an answer for his feelings aswell, but work is a good point. even in the series she did not really apologize. he did all the work. i really hated the ending in this relationship, wich is one of the hardest to cure. she did betray him, where was her work at all in this? but i didnt like his "revenge sex" aswell. and everytime they had time to speak....something happend and interrupt everything until the end..... im so unsatisfied with this ^^ ...

@@lllMacBethlll The doctor's answer isn't intended to answer the question of what he should do, but to explain why he's having trouble doing it. Even now, he wants to forgive her and realizes he's the impasse. He never stopped loving her. She never stopped loving him. She apologized over and over again. He only accepted it and forgave her when he realized that ultimately he was the only one preventing his own happiness in being with her. He had to come to the conclusion on his own in order to organically make the choice.

@@colinsmith4377 the docters answer has no room for insight, the answer is only right. thats why i dont like they end this discussion here. if this would end here, he comes empty and he leaves empty
"She apologized over and over again" theres not one szene she was really sorry, she was thinking he have to understand, (we can discuss the last, as she said "i brutally hurt you" but it isnt an apologize) show me one where she is really really sorry for what she was doing. there not a single view his anger about her could be a relief she would accepted. no in the first episodes she was angry about his anger.... wtf, and she was hiding behind excuses all the time. so she didnt rly reflect her doing, otherwise she would understand him....but she didnt
this was childsplay, but not an acting of 2 growed people
this can never be an happy ending. they both didnt grow up in there relationship
the thing is, he never was making a choice! he only wanted to hurt her too, thats not love
he had to say: "i want to be with you, but im so fucking angry....i cant get over it..." and thats where she had ALOT to do if she really loves him and had regrets

I know the reply is late, but imo yes and no, sometimes, you're looking for something specific on Wikipedia or Google, and the following articles take you to somewhere else completely, and on and on, I guess that, today, you probably need to be more curious, but it takes you much farther

You aren't even confined to words and terms that start with the same letter. Not to mention article of the day on the front page.

This is an interesting display of therapy. Usually, the therapist doesn't want to give the answer, but guide the person to seeing the answer for themselves. But Will kept changing the subject every time the therapist started leading him down that path. So to shock him, the therapist tells him the answer point blank.

    • @BruCipHiF

What I'm studying is that, as a therapist, you can give answers when you have enough information and, at the same time, the patient could've got to the same conclusion and is ready to understand it and internalize it. I think this scene was very well done.

    • @JavierGonzalez-lp3ke
      @JavierGonzalez-lp3ke ปีที่แล้ว

True, perhaps, yes. There are many forms of therapy a therapist can provide based upon any given clients' needs and/or presenting concerns: client-centered therapy; Rational Emotive Behavioral Therapy; Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT; most commonly utilized); Gestalt therapy; these are among the types currently in practice. I have a M.S. Clinical Psychology-Applied Research.

It wasn't a single, solitary instance. It was months on Mac's part. That's a lot of un-rejecting. Here's the thing...forgiveness doesn't mean condoning. Forgiving doesn't mean the relationship has to resume. To quote a movie I saw dealing with cheating "Some things you do in life...they stick."

I believe part of the self-torture could be you asking yourself what it was that you did (or didn't do) to allow it to occur. The "what-if's", the replay of events and / or conversations that might have caused or prevented it.

    • @DavidTSmith-jn5bs

I'll have to watch my Blu-Rays to confirm this, but I believe Will resolved this problem by telling a joke to Mackenzie about a kid who went to see a psychiatrist that his parents sent him to because he damaged the furniture (or some acting-out gesture) and the parents simply told him to simply stop doing it and he won't need therapy. Basically, Will simply decided to stop punishing her and move on with his life by marrying her. Simplistic I know but this is a TV show, not real life. I too have trust issues due to past failed relationships and have decided to live alone. Good idea or bad, who can say?

You can't always give people forgiveness for theirs or your own sake. Some action's go beyond such basic, and rathe rpassive human psychology. Betrayal is probably one of the single most pervasive feeling's anyone can feel especially if they know it without doubt. No amount of internal justification will ever absolve flat-out betrayal. You are completely at the mercy of the person you hurt. They can either forgive you to alleviate their own conscience, forget the betrayal the ol' water under the bridge routine, or they distance themselves, or a mix of all three.
