I wish I had a dime for every hour my friends and I spent in these dryers. We used to actually go to sleep with these on! I had long hair and it would take 2 hours easy, if not more. You have to remember that back then there wasn't too much immediate gratification like now. Like Spirits of Fashion I used big rollers too. But that was the 60s and straight hair was in. Your dryer may need to come out of the case to get better ventilation so it doesn't shut off. Love seeing this again! Thank you!
This brings back wonderful memories. My mom had a portable hair dryer, but the case was a hard case. It was "portable " in that you could carry it to whatever room you wanted to use it in. (Unlike hair dryers at the beauty shop). I used it as well as those rollers and picks. I always though they were itchy! And, they were not very sturdy and would sometimes use two picks to hold them. My mom's picks were pink. The hose often fell off when we used it- like when we moved or turned our head. My mother-in-law still used those rollers until she passed away(in. 2010). I think the looser curls were due to the curlers. Although, I thought it looked lovely how it looked freshly unrolled and unbrushed. Have you ever seen the Mary Tyler Moore episode with Rhoda using a hairdryer like that. She feel asleep with it on.
Brush curlers came and come in different sizes. We didn't take the bonnet all the way off to check the curlers. 20 minutes isn't enough. Mom generally left it on 30 minutes then checked the curls. Usually it took 45 minutes to an hour from wet hair. I HATED those curlers! I was happy when the foam curlers came out although we had to watch where the clipping bar went across the hair or we'd have lines everywhere. . lol

As a child I had really long hair. Every Saturday my mom would shampoo my hair and pile it onto my head and put the bonnet over it. I too would sometimes fall asleep with it working. There was a little indent where you could put a couple of drops of perfume to give your hair a nice scent. Did the unit come out of the case? If so, and you left it is it could have overheated. Portable meant you could take it to different rooms to use, not walk around with it on. Btw, the mug is no where near vintage. All cups, glasses and plates were much smaller back in the day. A cup for coffee, or a drinking glass, held maybe 8 ounces.

I would call this a success. I still have mine from the late sixties. I used it clear up through high school from time to time. I don't really know why I still have it. Haven't used it in over 45 years but it is in excellent condition. It was the curlers you used that caused the curls not to be tight. I used those same size because I just wanted loose curls. Sponge rollers are what may have worked more to your liking. Great video though!!!
My mom would use Dippity-Do on my wet hair, then use rollers and use the same dryer but blue! I dried my dads hair with the hose only, the first hand held hair dryer! 😂

I used that little item faithfully, every Saturday afternoon/ evening for many many years! I, all of my girl friends , and my mom’s friends used it the very same way. We used a wet set, with or without Dippity Doo. I used the brush rollers and even with my fine, NOT thick, below my ears cut, it too at least 11/2 -2 hours to dry. I only used the high setting. The brush rollers were supposed to be very tight, much closer together, placed in an organized pattern and many , many more of them. The picks, will hold all the rollers very tight , even the bottom ones, when you change their angle against your head. It was a real time commitment, especially girls with thick , long hair like yours.

I love your idea for a vintage gadgets series! It's so funny, because that is the exact hair dryer I used in the '60s to try to straighten my hair. I had to use giant rollers to achieve this, so the bonnet barely fit over the rollers. It took an hour to dry, and I do remember the bonnet pinching my ears, like you said. Great video!
Thanks so much! I’m glad you like the series so far 😊that’s so interesting, you used it to straighten! It would totally work with the giant rollers. I bet that was uncomfortable though!

I would put the cap on first then put in the hose and twist it to lock the hose in. I would give myself a manicure while my hair was drying. Thank you for sharing this video for us.
Hi I’m new to your channel and I love love love it! My grandmother had all sorts of gadgets like this. Her portable hair dryer actually looked like the hood from the salon but was portable....no chair. She also had a steam curler set from the 50’s and it doubled as a face steamer. I donated them to a local thrift store and kick myself for doing so. My mother gifted the dryer to an elderly lady who our hairdresser visited once a week to do her hair. She was unable to get out of the house, so i feel it was well worth it. Can’t wait to explore your channel some more!!
My mother had one of these when I was little. I don’t remember the nail dryer on hers, but maybe I just didn’t know what it was. Mom used the same type of hair rollers. The cat used to steal them and “drown” them in the dog’s water. lol When I got married, I purchased an updated version that hooks on to most handheld hair dryers.
Hello! Cute series, I love it! For the bristle rollers, you need to go down in size. I used that size when I had long, mid-back length hair. The shorter the hair, the smaller the curler. I use pin curl clips (the mini clamps) or bobby pins to set the curl instead of the picks. My mom grew up in the 50s, and she used these curlers up to the late 60s. I hope you try these curlers again!
I have one of those vintage hair dryers... I love it!! Iv only used it twice 😂. I scored it at a thrift store and have had it for a few years!! Great video!! 👍🏽
My mother had one of these and I do remember it taking her a long time to dry her hair. Then Sunbeam came out with a hard plastic round suitcase that turned into a hood (like at the hairdressers) and part of it sits on the counter/table to hold the hood. She owned that one too.
Was the Sunbeam hood dryer faster than the bonnet one? I would think the bonnet would be faster since the hot air was contained and directed into the hair, but probably the hood one was more powerful?
When i was young we had a dryer like this . you have to realise this was our first home dryer. So we thought it was great. . i have naturally curly hair my sister had straight so mom used pin curls and sis used curlers and they both used it About 40 minutes. But for us it was better in the winter than having to let our hair air dry.Thankyou so much for the memories
I didn't have a dryer like that, one one we had was more like the kind in salons, but it was in a case and popped up. You put it on a table and sat backwards with you head under it. Worked great. I remember sitting there reading or listening to my Snoopy radio. Definitely longer than 20 minutes though. Good memories. 🐈 Your hair looks super cute.
Do you ever get nervous using the cords with any of your vintage appliances? The prongs on the plugs seem so fragile compared to what we have today! I literally got one of these because of your video - oddly enough I bought it just for relaxation. Something about the sound of the dryer just puts me in the zone! I was a little nervous because it had such a firm grip once I put it in the outlet. It's secure for sure, but I'm not used to it. Do you ever have that experience? I want to usr it without worries. I'm super excited about it!
I found this cool to watch especially because we had one growing up. I remember it being hard to put the bonnet over the rollers too. We used to hold in the rollers with Bobby pins. I don't remember what brand it was but it looked very much like that one. Amazing you paid $2.00 for it! Loved watching the demo!
I just subscribed and I am loving your channel! You are bringing me back in time. It was a wonderful time of life. I was born in 1960 and my mom would set my hair as a kid, and yes, it took about an hour to dry your hair. Sometimes I would fall asleep with the dryer on. I still have my 1970's lady Schick bonnet dryer with green daises on it. My Grand Daughter loves to use it when she comes over to spend the night. Have you done a video on what interested you and your husband in this era?
@@LaciFayTheVintageGirlNextDoor I've actually been looking into this lately since I wanted to buy a bonnet dryer! I couldn't find many affordable vintage ones (plus some modern ones seem to have better and faster drying technology like the ionic feature). More recently-made vintage ones like Windermere seem more efficient, but who knows? So far I've found modern ones by Andis (ionic), Conair (bonnet as well as a brush attachment), and Laila Ali on the less expensive side. Still trying to determine which is best!
Chris S. I’m looking into buying a bonnet hair dryer. Its been 4 months since you made this comment. Have you tried any of the ones you listed and do you have any recommendations to point me in the right direction? I have long hair so I would need something powerful enough to dry all my hair haha
Oh and I love your eye makeup!! It's the same thought as the last video. If you don't have a video on how you do your makeup if love to see one. At least the eyes. 😊
When we used to straighten our hair, my mom would curl it just like that bottom to top, but with different rollers. We used a hair dryer similar to that as well. It took 40 minutes to an Hr to dry for us. Some of them had a clasp to keep the drying tube attached to the bag. I preferred this method to sleeping in curls 😝
Wow, my mom had one of these when I was growing up. And yes, curlers. Please ladies, don't go out in public with curlers in your hair! That was a huge turnoff for people back in those days. You love vintage gadgets so much, that I think you are a reincarnation of someone who lived back then.
I had a hair dryer that had the bonnet but the machine was the shape of a 📻. It had a “garage” door that slid up on the front where the hose and the bonnet were stored. It had a large dial that had different temperature. Miss that old dryer. I used to use the hose as a blow dryer. I had a “shag” hair style and this little dryer would gently dry my hair. I loved it!
Your hair straight out of the rollers looks beautiful. I think all you need to do is "Shake your head, darling!" (Probably not vintage, but still looks fantastic.)
BRUSH ROLLERS: they work well, but you are correct in that there is a trick to them. you must run the "pin" along the scalp very closely and sometimes it takes two of them. THE DRYER: I suspect she is an "old lady" LOL, but to be honest most women did not use them. If they did that had the time to sit and to needle work, read or something like that, while waiting on their hair How do I know this, LOL I was born in 1965, My Mom in 1941, and Grandma, then we go to Great Grandma, spent time with all of them. Yes I'm I'm VERY BLESSES. I did enjoy this video, it brought back so many memory's
I love the idea of this series!! I'm a sucker for vintage gadgets! These take forever to dry and curl your hair. Hours from totally wet, it's why they made them more portable so that you can carry on doing things. Even though they're not very portable with a power lead lol. The easiest way to put them on is to attach the tube and put it around the back then put on from the back, still totally awkward though. If you use a smaller barrel roller then it takes even longer to dry. For 40s/50s looks where you want tighter curls the best way is upstanding pin curls. It'll still take ages to dry tho.
Yay! I’m so glad you like it. I am too! I’ve collected a bunch and I’m so excited to start using them! Yes! I was thinking pincurls would work better with the cap for sure. Maybe I’ll have to do an update video and try that instead.
@@LaciFayTheVintageGirlNextDoor Love it! There's so little vintage content these days. I'm excited to see what goodies you have! That would be a great update to see!
I'm watching your video right now. I love that you are living and trying retro items and your house is beautiful. If I could share a few things with you. First the curl, you weren't using the pins quite right. The pins should have been used up against the the head and pinning the curlers to the head. Next the hairdryer is portable in as much as you can carry it to where you want to sit and dry your hair apposed to going to the beauty parlor. Oh yeah the hairdryer over heated because you were supposed to take the dryer out of the carrying case. The hose was always a problem because as you saw when it heated up it would fall off of the bonnet and if you have thick hair as I do it would get hot and burn your neck. That is why we would put a towel around our necks. It did take a while for your hair to dry that is why most women or young girls would take their baths and wash their hair in the evening and have all night to set and dryer your hair. After drying we would also sleep in the curlers. If you did happen to take the curlers out before going to bed you had one of two options. Style your hair and wrap your head in toilet paper so they style wasn't lost when sleeping or to wear a satin night cap to hold your hair in place. I'm really enjoying your videos and hope this was helpful.
I think if you place those stick pins so they are against your head with a little tension on the rollers it will hold them tighter. When you took the curlers out the loose curls around your face looked just beautiful!
Yes it's a rollers size but it would take longer to dry tacking thin section I started my apprenticeship in the 60 and we used to do a lots of setting good luck you are very clever love your style ♥️😊👏 from Australia
Hello! I must say I was lol-ing when you were sipping from your mug! Between your facial expressions and your mannerisms, I think you're the most joyful TH-camr I watch and it's delightful! May favorite part of every video is the "he-llo, myyyy name is La-ci" with all the great inflections! Also, I actually loved the way it looked fresh out of the dryer with all the curls. Such a cute look on you!
I just found your channel. Enjoyed the first one where you made donuts. Went to your channel excited to watch more and I'm sad to find there aren't lots to binge watch. I love vintage stuff. I'm going to watch what you have though and hope for more!
Nice My grandma use to use those roller.and she used big Bobbie pins.how do you find those nice gaget.i love the color plnk . which happens to be my favorite color
🌟WARNING: I love vintage gagdets and was just about to buy a bonnet hair dryer, when I came across another vintage TH-camr who mentioned that many vintage dryers contain asbestos!! I looked it up and sure enough, many if not all hair dryers made before the mass ban and recall in 1979 were likely blowing asbestos fibers into the air! The risk is particularly high for hairdressers and others who were exposed daily, but who wants to take such a horrible risk, considering some people apparently developed a disease just from washing work clothes exposed to asbestos? I might buy the modern Conair or Andis bonnet dryer instead and preserve my peace of mind. But we should spread the word! I also learned that other vintage electronics like toasters, TVs, radios, ovens, and irons contained asbestos that would often shed, as well as some vintage toys and insulation in vintage houses. Buyer beware!
I used to roll my hair with brush rollers and had a dryer like that one. It took up to an hour to dry from shampoo to dry. My hair has no curl of its own and I usually wore it in a pageboy.
I have a LOT of hair. It’s longish and abundant. I use a cap that I put on my regular hair dryer, which is not as cute or fun as yours but it’s an inexpensive modern version of this. I will do a wet set in the evening and because I have so much hair I will turn the dryer on my hair for sometimes as much as an hour before bed and leave it over night… for me, it’s helpful. I might need to get it cut really. But I like using my dryer. It helps me. 😄 but if your hair dries over night just fine over night I can’t imagine a person needing both 😅
Yay! I'm very excited for this new series! 😺 I have a vintage table top dryer, it works way better than a modern on I got at Sally's. I like it for reheating set if need be. I've used brush rollers and definitely had to size down. I've used new and older ones, from a thrift store (cleaned and disinfected). The older ones seem to hold together much better, no bristles left in my hair and allows better air flow.
Could you tell us what brand the modern bonnet dryer was that didn't work as well as the vintage one? I'm trying to decide what kind to get and had been leaning towards a modern one assuming it had better technology...but maybe not? Certainly not as pretty as the old ones!
I'm 49 and I rember those hairdryers. My mom had one and used it still in n the 70s and I used it in the when a teenager and I would put my hair in a wet set for big hair in the 80s. She used some sort of clips for the brush rollers to help hold them in. I used sponge rollers. I tell you this was much better than sleeping in rollers every night imo. Of couse I graduated to hot curlers and then a curling iron as I got older. PS: It used to take about 40 mins to 1 hour to dry completely.
Pretty look on u, nice '40s look!! Smaller sections r key. Sections no more than 1/2 the thickness of the rod or curler, is the rule of thumb I was taught... In Cosmetology School (I went) they stress thin sections in everything when you're rolling or cuting and coloring/perming. For precision cut'n/dry'n time and processing perms or coloring evenly. Just fyi.. to save time for u next time.
Most of us did this while doing thing like phone call writing letters where you would stay in one spot, and it takes a little longer to dry the more wet your hair is. I hope this helps and you can put the hose on the side as well.
My mum had one like that it was good she could hang it on her shoulder and walk from room to room & do some homework before work she was a very pretty woman & a beautiful mum I miss her loads. Sending love and prayers always keep safe xx❤️🙏🏻🇬🇧
What a fab new series doll! I love this vintage hair dryer, I remember my cousin used to have one back in the day! ❤ Always a joy to see you on the YouToobzzzz beautiful!😘Xx
It takes about an hour under the dryer. It is not portable. You have to sit still for the dryer to work. You are suppose to attach one curl to the next with the pin. You did not leave your hair under the dryer long enough.
They make a modern version of the bonnet that attached to your regular hairdryer. I love it so much but it does take 45 min to an hour for a wet set to dry.
I've also found modern bonnet hair dryers like this one, instead of a bonnet attachment to your hairdryer. But I think they still take as long as the attachment. Either way, at least it's hands-free!
My Mom had one of these when I was a kid. That’s how she dried our hair. It smelled kind of weird though lol And she had those rollers too but hers were pink!
You have to put the pins in at a certain angle x it’s best to put cap on first and like you did put hose in after, I used to have the hose coming out at the side. Turns off for safety
My mom got a hair dryer like this. Probably late 60s. I think she got it with green stamps. With mom,me ,and my sister, the house was a beauty salon on Saturday afternoon
My mom, aunts, and grandmother used a bonnet dryer like this. They would sit under the dryer for and hour but they only did it once a week, usuall Saturday night so their hair would be perfect for church. They would apply Dippity Do hair gell with a comb to slightly damp hair then roll it. Each day the curl got a little looser until it was time to wash and curl again on Saturday
In the late 60s, my mom would sit in bed and read or knit with that same dryer, curlers, and picks. I would fall asleep next to her from the sound of the dryer. I think your hair looked fabulous straight out of the curlers. Very glam old Hollywood.

Oh my gosh- used to dry my hair this way w huge rollers. I liked it.
Yes love vintage gadgets!!!
My mom had one it was pink and we had those rollers that were pink blue and yellow what another childhood memory
Thanks babe!
For longer hair, if you use larger rollers, wont that just make the curls even looser combined with the added weight of having long hair?
So we thought it was great. . i have naturally curly hair my sister had straight so mom used pin curls and sis used curlers and they both used it
About 40 minutes. But for us it was better in the winter than having to let our hair air dry.Thankyou so much for the memories
What a great machine...your hair looks great after that.
You are so adorable and I just LOVE your channel 🥰
I didn't have a dryer like that, one one we had was more like the kind in salons, but it was in a case and popped up. You put it on a table and sat backwards with you head under it. Worked great. I remember sitting there reading or listening to my Snoopy radio. Definitely longer than 20 minutes though. Good memories. 🐈 Your hair looks super cute.
These vintage gadget videos are amazing
Do you ever get nervous using the cords with any of your vintage appliances? The prongs on the plugs seem so fragile compared to what we have today! I literally got one of these because of your video - oddly enough I bought it just for relaxation. Something about the sound of the dryer just puts me in the zone! I was a little nervous because it had such a firm grip once I put it in the outlet. It's secure for sure, but I'm not used to it. Do you ever have that experience? I want to usr it without worries. I'm super excited about it!
Sooo cute!!! I'm excited for this series!!🥳💗
Ahhh yay!! I’m so glad!!
@@LaciFayTheVintageGirlNextDoor 😁😅😁
I found this cool to watch especially because we had one growing up. I remember it being hard to put the bonnet over the rollers too. We used to hold in the rollers with Bobby pins. I don't remember what brand it was but it looked very much like that one. Amazing you paid $2.00 for it! Loved watching the demo!
Hi lacy, I would a sunbeam hair dryer from my thrift shop. My took a long time to dry but I have very long hair. Thank you
I just subscribed and I am loving your channel!
I think it would be interesting to see how it measures up against a modern bonnet style hair dryer. Is it noisier? Is it cooler? Etc.
Oh idk! I haven’t seen a modern one of this style! Only the stationary hood ones at the salon! I’ll have to look into it.
That was cute. Totally used that every night in the 70s as a kid. We all had long hair parted in the middle.
The curls still look great 👍.
I like your hair like that ❤
My mom had one of those that she and I used all the time when I was young, until my dad bought her a hand held dryer ❤️🥰
I remember a girlfriend in the 60’s rolling her hair with empty frozen orange juice cans. Lol what we did (and do) for beauty. Love your channel.
I loved it!
Oh that sounds awesome!!
Great idea for the channel!!!❤❤❤
Thanks!! I’m so glad you like it!!
Your hair straight out of the rollers looks beautiful. I think all you need to do is "Shake your head, darling!" (Probably not vintage, but still looks fantastic.)
My aunt had one of those and very Sunday she would sit at the kitchen table wish I could sit with her again
Oh what a wonderful memory!
Yes me n mom did our hair on Saturday night for church on Sunday oh how I wish she's gone now
@@karolinesmail489 Did you read what you wrote? You wish your mom was gone now?
BRUSH ROLLERS: they work well, but you are correct in that there is a trick to them. you must run the "pin" along the scalp very closely and sometimes it takes two of them. THE DRYER: I suspect she is an "old lady" LOL, but to be honest most women did not use them. If they did that had the time to sit and to needle work, read or something like that, while waiting on their hair
How do I know this, LOL I was born in 1965, My Mom in 1941, and Grandma, then we go to Great Grandma, spent time with all of them.
Yes I'm I'm VERY BLESSES. I did enjoy this video, it brought back so many memory's
Aw man, I think you are too hard on yourself, those curls turn out gorgeous! 👍👍👍
Thank you!
We always had pin curls when using the hair dryer.
I'm in need of replacing my bonnet. I like the old dryers and even the old hooded dryers
That makes my heart so happy! Yay! I’m so glad you like my channel ❤️❤️
I think your hair looks pretty. My mom had a hair dryer like that. :)
I like it. Very cute! 💗
Wish I had more of a circular face for these types of styles.
Thank you lovely!
Still turned out cute curls!
I just found your channel. Enjoyed the first one where you made donuts. Went to your channel excited to watch more and I'm sad to find there aren't lots to binge watch. I love vintage stuff. I'm going to watch what you have though and hope for more!
I have 2 years worth of videos 😊 I do have several makeup videos as well as some GRWM videos where I do my makeup.
Laci Fay The Vintage Girl Next Door oh, my mistake. Good to know!
I love vintage gadgets! I have lots but I cant wait to see more :)
Oh fun! You’ll have to tell me if you have any of the same ones!
@@LaciFayTheVintageGirlNextDoor I surely will!
Nice My grandma use to use those roller.and she used big Bobbie pins.how do you find those nice gaget.i love the color plnk . which happens to be my favorite color
I would love to see a night time routine video!
I will put that on my list!
Laci you might try the vintage ear pads with this 💛
I have a LOT of hair. 😄 but if your hair dries over night just fine over night I can’t imagine a person needing both 😅
You have beautiful hair! I love the vintage hair dryer! My aunt had one of those!!
Thanks so much!
Yay! I'm very excited for this new series! 😺
I have a vintage table top dryer, it works way better than a modern on I got at Sally's. I like it for reheating set if need be.
I've used brush rollers and definitely had to size down. I've used new and older ones, from a thrift store (cleaned and disinfected). The older ones seem to hold together much better, no bristles left in my hair and allows better air flow.
Yay! I’m so glad! I’ll have to keep my eye out for smaller brush rollers! Thanks lady!
Oh awesome! Thanks for sharing!
Your hair was lovely right out of the curlers.
I am so excited for this series!!!
Yay!! I’m so glad!! Me too 😊
Looks great
Most of us did this while doing thing like phone call writing letters where you would stay in one spot, and it takes a little longer to dry the more wet your hair is.
You looked luscious wen the curlers came out.
What a fab new series doll!
I love this vintage hair dryer, I remember my cousin used to have one back in the day! ❤
Always a joy to see you on the YouToobzzzz beautiful!😘Xx
Thanks so much beauty! I’m glad you like the series!
@@LaciFayTheVintageGirlNextDoor ❤xx
omg yes vintage gadgets series
Yay!!
It smelled kind of weird though lol
And she had those rollers too but hers were pink!
Love this series idea !!😍 can’t wait to see more 😍😍
Thanks! I do have a few more besides this one.
Ahh what a fun memory!
Can you make a video on why you decided the 50s I would love to hear it. I've watched all your videos 😊
