I’m and ex British army armourer. Skill at arms instructor and weapons geek 👌. As Mr AAR states at the start we can all learn. I watched this knowing how to zero a myriad of sighting equipment and weapon systems. I am stuck in my ways and prefer to fire a 5 round group and use the mean point of impact. However let it be know this is a very good and informative video. Worth the watch and full of valid and useful information. thankyou.

Best explanation I have seen so far for anybody doing it for the very first time. Although most of us kinda know in theory how this goes, unless you have done it before, (I have not) it is good to see a straightforward, clear and concise explanation. I just got a HW100/hawk scope, so I will be getting onto this next week, this video helps a lot in advance. Thanks for making it.

Never thought about the mounts lining up. I've been shooting for years and consider myself quite knowledgeable. Just goes to show that we should never stop learning. I use sportsmatch mounts currently on my ultimate sporter with a hawke vantage sf scope and find it laser beam accurate. But I have used budget scopes and mounts on previous rifles and never thought about the alignment of the mounts. I tend to fire one shot and then adjust the crosshairs to meet the first shot.

To avoid future disagreement I suggest we rename the muzzle sound-reduction-device the ‘attenuator’. This follows the English protocol of using an additional and unnecessary new word which is slightly less helpful than the pre-existing term. This will also serve to attenuate future argument and confuse newcomers and old hands alike!

Good demonstration. On my range, I use a fence post as a plumb line. I start at 20 yards, and zero 1 inch high @12:00 oclock. Then move to 40 yards, and adjust to pinpoint zero. This make for predictable holdover/holdunder on the 50, 60, 70, and 80 yard gongs. You will have much more confidence on the longer shots by being able to see/measure your drop.

The reason some mounts center better than others has little to none to do with the quality. The budget mounts you’ve used seem to be applicable to a range of rail sizes like 11-13mm where as the other pair seems to be specific to the size of the rail your r10 is using (most likely 11mm). This is natural because you can’t center something at the exact same spot if it has the ability to move on the axis it’s being catered on. I love your videos lo they helped me a lot as I’ve only just purchased my first ever air rifle! Im subscribed and will definitely be revisiting your channel for various tips and reviews!

Watched the YT channel Pellets And Pistons zeroing a springer and the last method briefly touched on here stated scopes mostly
    = 1 click per 1/4 in at 100 yds
    = 2 clicks per 1/4in at 50 yards
    = 4 clicks per 1/4 in at 25 yards
    ( then i guess 8 clicks per 1/4in at 12.5 yards?)

I have a Wood Work bench vice, that i have fitted with soft rubber jaws, to securely and carefully, hold the gun.
But i dont zero to the previous shot personally..
As with each pellet being slightly "off", i zero my scope to a tight grouping. So that my scope is always Zero'd to a target, regardless whether i get a slight pellet stray or not.
Always worked very well for me :)

I use the shoot a small group and adjust in stages.(purely a convenience) but a thing that has cropped up with Scopes that I have Bought is that the adjusting and magnification knobs are very hard to turn. Presumably they rely on "o" ring seals to seal and provide friction positioning . I have tried putting silicone oil on the bit where the knobs meet the tube but with only slight improvement probably a second "o" ring that the oil could not reach? ( had to notice that Andy seems to have no problems with stiff controls and one of my scopes is the model he was demonstrating in best budget scopes)

What distance should you zero your scope from? I live in a flat and have to zero from 15feet. Ive been out a couple of times but couldn't hit a barn door from 20mtrs🤣. I even gave it to a gun shop to zero for me, and when i got it home i couldn't barely hit the target card from 15feet. Ive kind of given up on it all. I have a 95 and an 80, both 177 and fitted with hawke 3-9×40 mil dots, both i can't set up effectively. Also got a £80 Remington Express with open sights that i can hit a matchstick from 25mtrs with!

Hi Andy. When I first zeroed in my scope, I put the gun in the workmate, fired 5 shots, then moved the crosshairs to the (approximate) geometrical center of the impact points.
I repeated that procedure and got about half inch groups at 30 yards, which I thought was good enough. Could you please comment what's wrong about that method, or why your method is better ?
BTW thanks for the plumline tip AND the mounts. It never crossed my mind that the mounts would be inaccurate or that the crosshairs would not be level.
