    I love gymnos. My favorite is G. Mihanovichii. Mine bloom from spring to fall. the flowers are usually a pale avocado green with brown markings on the back of the petals, but the variety Friedrichii has bright pink flowers. About seven years ago or so, I bought a packet of seed that they called G. Mihanovichii variegated. I knew that variegated plants almost never come true from seed, but I was hoping for different colored flowers. As expected, the plants were all green, but I did get different colored flowers. One bloomed light pink, and the others bloomed a very pale shade of beige with brown markings on the back, very pretty. This year, they have been sending up one or two flowers at a time from late April till now.
    PS. If you get a chance for a cutting or plant, I have found a beautiful Euphorbia. Euphorbia geroldi. The flowers are just like E. millii, opening yellow then turning scarlet, but it has no thorns, and the leaves are dark green and very shiny. they remind me of holly leaves. In strong light, the leaves are mottled with patches of reddish brown. The cuttings root quickly and they grow fast, starting to bloom at five inches tall. I found it on EBay, when searching for E. Millii last fall..

    Had a very nice day and sadly noticed my tigers jaw was drooping
    I am soooo glad that I was able to propagate two of its pups!
    I watered it only once a week and allowed to dry out I plan to find another one but have put myself on restraints for plant purchases!! Propagated some and want to work on these for a while
    Thank you soooo much for great succulent and cacti videos. I enjoy the information and have increased my knowledge!

    Oh Lyn, those flowers are beautiful!! I only have two gymnocalycium in my small cacti collection. The G. baldianum and the G. saglione, mine are not a big as yours. I was so happy to see you show those two in bloom. New to this hobby, I decided to start my collection all in terra cotta clay pots thinking I will be better able to regulate proper watering. Do you think clay pots are better for beginners? I am becoming quite excited about this new hobby and hope to get of on the right foot. Thank you for sharing your passion and collection with us! 🌵

    • @desertplantsofavalon
      @desertplantsofavalon  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Karen :-D I bet your Gymno baldianus and Gymno saglione are beautiful :-D yes Terracotta pots are PERFECT for beginners as the pots allow the soil to dry out faster and safer if you are newer to the hobby :-D so happy you are loving Cacti and Succulents too and welcome to the Hobby

    Do you have any care tips for Gymnocalyciums? My talent for killing off the poor things is quite remarkable! Keeping them out of direcr sunlight seems important, and since you mention they benefit from drying out completely between waterings - do you think using clay pots might help? And do they require standard feeding procedures, or something different?

    • @desertplantsofavalon
      @desertplantsofavalon  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi :-D yes clay pots work well for these Gymnos as they can be prone to rotting and they definitely seem to do best away from strong direct sunshine :-D I used to grow these in a glass greenhouse when I lived in the 'south of Ireland where it was much sunnier and they used to go yellow a lot. but since moving to Northern Ireland where it is much cloudier and growing them in this polytunnel which is green coated they seem to be doing so much better, I use rain water when it available and fertilise once a month with a tomato fertiliser and use it at half strength as this helps to encourage blooming :-D they like a cool and dry winter rest period around 5-8c / 41-45 Fahrenheit and not watered from October until March :-D thanks so much for your wonderful comment and for watching and sending you tons of love and happiness and PLANT POWER from across the Emerald Isle and have a terrific Tuesday XXXX
