Esci was a separate company in the days indeed John. Italeri has bought it over when they went out of business. Price wise they were allot cheaper than Tamiya, it was in the same price range as the Italeri kits at that period. Great subject and not to bad model for that time, I really enjoy as well building old kits, they are usually great and the detail is not to bad and the part counts is not massive.
esci (pronounced eschee) produced a lot of old aurora kits in the late seventies through the eighties, including 1/48 armor kits. i built the demag you have twice. very fine kit without any problems.
