#1 the Canon 50mm STM 1.8 lens. It’s a fixed 50MM focal length lens with a fast 1.8 aperture, making it a great option for both stills and video. This Canon 50MM STM 1.8 Lens is a newer one to the lineup compared to several older versions of the nifty fifty 50MM that Canon made. It’s smoother and much quicker than previous versions, and has less “noise” while focusing. Another important factor is price! The 50MM STM lens is $149 new, and around $100 in good condition on the used market.
#2 The canon 10-18MM STM Wide Angle lens. It’s one of my favorite Canon APS-C lenses to shoot with in 2024. It is currently at a $299 new price, and can be found used/refurbished in the $150-200 range if you want to save a few bucks. The Canon 10-18mm STM super wide angle lens that showcases exceptionally quick focusing capability. This lens is also image stabilized which the T5 body is not, so if there is a bit of shake or movement, it does a good job to minimize the effect of it. There is a toggle on the side of the lens to turn IS on/off, as well as a toggle for manual/AF mode should you wish to utilize manual mode which can be fun to utilize for video to move in/out of focus.
#3 Canon 55-250MM IS STM Telephoto Lens. This is an image stabilized lens that is great to pair with the T5. It also has some light telephoto range, and it’s speed is a big plus compared to the Canon 75-300mm, which is slower to focus. This is available new for $299 and used in the $150 range. This lens also has the 7 blade circular aperture like the 50MM STM lens to create some dreamy soft backgrounds. And it has one UD lens element which reduces aberrations throughout it’s range, making this a pleasant lens to use at all focus ranges. With other zoom lenses I find myself using very select areas of focal range, but with the 55-250mm, It’s crisp through the range with good light.

Hi! That's awesome! I would actually recommend taking a look at the Canon 55-250MM IS STM lens. It's a great smooth lens that's super fast, and gives you quite a bit of range. Used prices are in the $130-160 USD, I think around $299 new.

Oh definitely! I've seen some incredibly photos taken even in 2024 with the T5. You get a couple good lenses and you're in good shape!

Yep, still takes great pics! Only thing lacking in 2024, is higher quality video, but for stills, still takes good pictures for sure.

Yep, it's widely available in the US marketplace used. For the body and 18-55mm lens, it normally sells for around $175 USD.
Hi! So I have the canon T5. I ordered a refurbished 50MM from canon, and it doesn’t fit my cameras body. What’d I do wrong in ordering and can I get some sort of adapter so it can fit my current camera?
Darn! Canon makes a few different "mount" versions of the 50mm. You want to find the "CANON EF" 50MM mount. I would probably go ahead and do a return if you could. You might have gotten the newer "RF" Mirrorless 50mm lens? That won't fit on your T5.

For group portraits (and wider groups) I like the 10-18mm lens, which will be equivalent of 15-27mm, making the outer edge of that range possibly a good option? There will be a bit of distortion on the outer edges of the image. The 50mm likely would be a little too close.

Hello! I found this website, and it's pretty handy. I have actually bought a few camera setups from dentists over the years. The most common I have seen are Nikon 85mm and 105MM FIXED lenses, that would be paired with a Nikon DSLR body. Also, Canon has a 100mm F2.8 lens that is pretty affordable you could pair with a Canon body and achieve similar results!

It's like the only 3 Canon lenses I bought. LOL. Then I did splurge on Sigma 18-35mm because people say that's the lens they use on all sorts of video cameras, Black Magic, Red Camera etc.
