Sergio Catalán, the Chilean muleteer who found Nando and Roberto, became a beloved person to the survivors. The survivors tell that they called him "father", they went to visit him in Chile, they took him to Uruguay, they helped him and his family financially, in his hip operation. Until Sergio passed away in 2020.

Well as a matter of fact the survivors said they wanted to be consulted in everything BUT the screenplay, they didn't want to interfere with bayona's vision for the story knowing that they are not screen writers. In everything else they were consulted thoroughly, but they were clear they didn't want to see the script until the movie was done.

Roberto Canessa is a children's cardiologist, the story of his girlfriend waiting for him is also beautiful. The man reading the list of survivors is a real survivor, Carlitos Páez. Many have written books and toured about personal motivation, teamwork, resilience, meaning of life. They are still married to the girlfriends who waited for them, a detail that I think is nice😍

Vasco's father (the boy who died, having hallucinations screaming for his father), returned to the cordillera to take his son's remains even though repatriating a body was illegal. He had problems with the law, but managed to bury his son in Uruguay. Coco's mother expressed in an interview that she was relieved with herself that each of the survivors had a piece of her son (Coco's parents and his girlfriend traveled to Chile thinking he was alive because of a mistake with the list). Marcelo's mother did not have the courage to see her son's childhood friend (one of the survivors) again, because he survived but her son did not. Carlitos's father was adamant in the hope that his son would return alive (Marcelo played his own father in the film). Nando's father started dating a new woman in the time frame of the incident, they say he even got rid of Nando's things (thinking he was dead). Nando says that his father was what motivated me to come back. The actors have a good relationship with the survivors and with the family of those who died.

Where are people even getting the "Nando's father started dating a new woman in the time frame of the incident." Some even said he remarried in other reactions.
Seler Parrado wasn't dating and didn't remarry. I've read all of the books, including Nando's personal account, and the documentaries, and none of them mention a new gf or wife. The woman that runs into the Chilean hospital in the movie with Nando's father is suppose to be Nando's eldest sister. The only bit of truth in these statements about Seler is he did sell Nando's things (as well as Eugenia and Susana's) because he was a rational and pragmatic person. He could not believe they would be alive in the Andes after a plane crash (and in all rights Seler should have been correct since the boys surviving the crash was a miracle in and of itself) and was not going to torture himself with what he believed to be the false hope some others in their Montevideo community held. And it pained Seler to see their things, reminded at every turn, while he walked alone through an empty house.
Seler wasn't dating nor did he remarry. His ashes were buried beside Susy and Eugenia in the Valley of Tears.
So no, I have no idea where anyone is getting the remarried thing other than they saw it in the comments on TH-cam. If someone has proof and a legitimate source besides "TH-cam comments" I'd love to hear it.

Hello, how are you? As a Uruguayan, I'd like to contribute a bit to the history and the movie.
-The actors are Argentine and Uruguayan, and we share practically the same Spanish accent. However, they trained to speak as the survivors did at that age to add even more realism.
-Everything was recreated as it was in the 70s in Uruguay, including taxis, the airport, bars, churches, everything.
-Part of the survivors appears in the movie. Fernando Parrado opens the door at the airport for the actor playing him, and the actresses playing his mom and sister. Carlos Paez plays his own father, reading the names of the survivors near the end. Roberto Canessa is the doctor accompanying the actor representing him when they arrive at the hospital.
-Roberto Canesa became one of the best pediatric cardiologists in the country, a job he continues to this day with a foundation that helps children with congenital heart problems. One of the children he saved is the son of a friend of mine
-In Uruguay, we don't have mountains or snow, and they didn't have the necessary clothing for the cold since the city they were going to in Chile didn't require it.
    Greetings from Uruguay!

All of their stories are devastatingly sad but Nando's gets me the most... He lost his mom and his sister but he stayed strong for his dad, he trained every day, he went on that crazy journey with roberto, he even told his friends they could eat his mom and sister to survive (they didn't do it), he did all of this to survive... But when he got home he realized he was alone, his dad had found another woman and had moved on, he gave most of Nando's stuff to his cousin, he sold Nando's bike, basically everything that belonged to him was gone. He started living alone cause his dad had a new family, he couldn't keep studying, he had to work, to learn how to live alone... He said that during the holidays was the hardest. On his second christmas (a year after the accident) he was so alone that he had to wait until after midnight to go to Roberto's house :(
Fortunately now he has a beautiful family, but it's just crazy to me that he still had to go through all this after spending 2 months in hell!

The film is a cinematic masterpiece, not only because of the aesthetics, art, photography, make-up or script, but because they managed to tell the story as real and truthful as possible, to the point that the survivors actively participated in it and say that when they see it they relive in their minds everything that happened. It is wonderful the way in which Bayona manages to show the harshness of what happened with an artistic touch and a strong emotional charge and for the first time not only highlighting the figure of the survivors as heroes but also those who died and did not make it out of the mountain, which is why Numa's voice as narrator is so important. Each of the actors met the real person they were playing and most of them managed to create a bond with them, moving from interpretation to reality and giving the importance it deserves to what each survivor felt, because as they have already said, each one remembers the mountain in a unique way. Thanks for reacting and next time, just cry, it is better to express your emotions!

I have the honor of living in the country that was the place of salvation for them: Chile. In 1972 the country was facing almost a civil war and, in fact, a year later a dictatorship started that lasted for 17 years (a dictatorship initially wanted by almost all the people btw, it was the only way to bring some order at the time. What happened next is open to debate).
Still, as soon as the news of the 16 survivors spreaded, the country was paralized. We all forgot about politics and were united on a common ground, we all wanted them alive, and they finally returned as a Phoenix when everyone was still mourning their loss. They weren’t chileans, we didn’t know them and we thought they were dead 70 days ago. We sent a lot of missions the first 10 days, but called them off because we were risking more lives to rescue what we thought were only the remains. We decided to wait for warmers times to do that, no one ever thought someone could be alive after a plane crash on the Andes mountains and after 72 days, it had never happened before and it hasn’t happened since, not once, ever. When we knew, the entire country celebrated their rescue and had a moment of happiness on those difficult times because of this unique survival story, we celebrated as if they were chileans themselves (and we still think of them as if they were).
And, decades later, we managed to rescue the 33 miners, alive, from a very underground mine after 69 days, and they almost had no food, no water, survived the colapse of a big part of the mine, the heat was almost unbearable, and the air was slowly being consumed. We spent a lot on executing many plans in case one or many of them didn’t work without even knowing if they survived the initial colapse, time was running out (chances were they were all already dead, we didn’t know they were alive until weeks after starting the rescue. We simply don’t leave anyone behind). And happily, one of those plans finally worked. The rest is history.
To me, those two stories are the most impressive survival stories ever registered, and we are proud of having taken part in both of them. This particular story is one of the greatest displays of human courage and strength known to mankind, is not called the Miracle of The Andes for nothing. And we were the promised land for those exceptional human beings, that’s something we will never forget. How could we?
Huge respect for all the passengers aboard that Fairchild 571 flight, including those who sadly couldn’t make it home alive, and that are resting up there at the Valley of Tears (it was called that way when this incident hadn’t occurred yet, like the name was meant to be). We had nothing but respect and admiration for them here, and we’ll never forget the lessons we learned from them. This is one of the few events in history that is truly worthy of being called a miracle, it’s nothing short of being one.
PS: the rescue scene is very accurate (the same as most of the film). What Nando says aboard the helicopter when he sees them is exactly what he said irl (“Ahí están! Ahí están! Están todos! Están todos!”, translated “There they are! There they are! There’s all of them! There’s all of them!” Iconic words remembered till this day) and the black and white shot is not made for the movie, it’s the real shot the camera man filmed that very day. What you see on that shot are the real survivors seconds after seeing that the rescue finally came after 72 days.

Thank you for the respectful and emotional reaction. I've known about this story since reading the book back in 1976, and this story still makes me cry some 50 years later. There's something about this story that keeps drawing me back to those 16, now 14, boys now men. When I think my life is in the crapper, I think of what they went through and think they had it worse. This movie deserves an Oscars! This is a cinematic masterpiece, not only because of the aesthetics, art, photography, make-up or script, but because the story is real and truthful as possible....
And may I ask: why no focus on one of THE REAL HERO of the story - SERGIO CATALAN ? The man that found them was Sergio Catalan, a Chilean muleteer. (And this is Sergio Catalan's story). He was moving his animals through the mountain and happened to come across them. He said that at first he thought they were tourists. However, the more he looked at them he realized how poor their condition was. (But) because of the stream he couldn't hear them. So he had to go and get a piece of paper and a pen so the boys could communicate with him. Once he got their message he rode on his horse 10 hours to the closest police station. He said it took him what was left of the day and the whole night to get there and you were right in your reaction. When he arrived they didn't believe him. They thought he was drunk and making it up. However, since he refused to budge and he had the letter they decided to go ahead with the rescue... After they were rescued the survivors developed a really close relationship with him. Some of them said he was like a father to them. When he got sick and needed hip replacement surgery, the boys paid for his medical bills and Roberto helped him get treatment quickly since he was now a doctor. Sergio passed away in 2020 and Gustavo Zerbino attended his funeral in representation of the survivors. He carried his coffin and gave a speech to say goodbye to him. "
There should be a PART II of the Society of the Snow, with the story focusing on SERGIO CATALAN... People may disagree with me, but for me, Sergio Catalan is NOW a member of the Society of Snow - and ONE OF THE HEROES... So, I repeat, there should be a Part II...

I am from Uruguay and every time I see the scene of the reunion with their families, I can't stop crying with the mixture of sadness and happiness.
fact: When Nando Parrado hit his head on the roof of the plane, he had a brain concussion and was left in a coma for 3 days. The companions thought he had died so they left him on the side of the plane. Thanks to that Nando was saved, since the cold on his head reduced the swelling in his brain.
The black circles under his eyes were blood accumulated due to the blow to his head.
Another fact about Uruguay: There is no snow or mountains here, the highest hill is 500 meters (1640 feet). These guys were at the height, without any preparation and I think none of them knew snow.

Amazing reaction, thank you for sharing it. Thank you as well for watching it in Spanish.
    A few facts:
Nando made quite a recovery because even when his head swelled with the impact, his head was facing the cold metal of the plane also he was left kind of outside the plane because everybody was thinking he was dead. This served as a very cold ice pack to heal the swelling in his head and make him better. The idea Nando had to want to eat the bodies came out of anger that the pilots' negligence got them to be stuck in the mountain helpless. Let's not forget he lost his mum, sister and 2 best friends. Nando's anger it's what pushed him to want to get out of there no matter what.
They were peeing black because of severe dehydration.
Fito was the one who thought of making water, glasses to protect their eyes from the reflexion of the sun in the snow and also chose the bodies that would be eaten along with his cousins Daniel and Eduardo. Fito was called the inventor.
Carlitos, the young person who crashed into the suitcases with his car at the airport, was a spoiled child who came from a wealthy family. He was very spoiled, he even had a nanny, after this trip his perspective of life absolutely changed. In the plane, he was in charge of making sure there were not drafts in the plane or reduce the possibility of drafts using the suitcases and plane seats, he was very good at it. He also was the one who made the sleeping bag that Nando and Roberto used to protect them and sleep during their walk to Chile.
They had so so so so many cigarettes because in Chile cigarettes were scarce and Javier Methol, the man who lost his wife in the avalanche, worked in a Tabaco company so thought it was a good business to take a lot of cigarettes and sell them in Chile. In those years if you went to Chile with a few dollars or had some out of the market products you were a millionaire. Chile was going through a horrible economical crisis.
Numa did not get injured like that in the real events, someone walked on his leg by accident because of the lack of space in the plane and because he was not eating his body did not have much strength to recover from the bruise. He was the last one who died and his death pushed Nando and Roberto to say fuck it lets do this, let's save ourselves because no one else is going to. The others 14 left in the plane also had a plan b in case Nando and Canessa did not make it which was putting together another team to hike the mountains.
The actual survivors loved this version more than the 1993 version, because it doesn't idolise the survivors as the heroes, instead recognises and considers those who died and their memory. In the alive version some families did not give permission to use the real rugby player's names. In this versions all the families were happy and satisfied with the way the story was told and gave permission.
Reporters kept digging in a very nasty way how they survived, what did they eat, etc. The survivors were very secretive and ashamed about saying they ate human and were scared to be judged, being Catholics, by their families and friends also going to jail. They had a press conference were they answered to reporters questions ONCE instead that addressing the situation 100000 times to every reporter who asked. They asked the reporters and people for respect of their choices considering the very harsh circumstances they had to face. Pancho Delgado (Numa's best friend in the movie was they one who spoke in this conference) He said that Jesus gave his blood and body to save the world so the survivors took their friends bodies and blood for them to be save. Pancho also asked the reporters to please not spoiled with yellow press and judgement an act that was sacred to them and something that was done for pure survival instinct.
The actual survivors made a Kameo in the movie Nando, opened the door to the actor who played him at the airport, Roberto Canessa was one of the Drs in the Hospital when they got rescued, Coche Inciarte reading a newspaper in the bar Numa and his friends were, Numa's real life nephew passing by Numa's house when he was entering and Carlitos, who read all the survivors names, were is different scenes. The house shown as Numa's house in the movie was actually his real house back in 1972.
The reason why Zerbino would not leave without the suitcase it's because he hoped that tokens from the death people, like personal belongings such as jewelry, rosaries, ID's, letters written before dying were taking back to give to their families. That actually happened the real survivor refused to leave without the suitcase and when back home he personally went to each of the families homes of the passengers that did not survive to give them something that belonged to them, so the families even when not having their bodies they could have something to remember them by.
In the movie isn't shown but the rescue was in 2 stages. They had to rescue one lot of people that day and the next lot the day after. Some survivors had to stay another night waiting for the other helicopters to arrive. Those left behind the first day were left with food and a team of rescuers. A survivor said the rescuers were scared of them after seeing all the human remaining all over the place also the smell and dirt was unbearable.
There is a man who was part of the search team that were looking for the plane during the 71 days the survivors were stranded on the mountain. His name is Claudio Lucero and he had made quite strong arguments in the media about how he believes the 27 people left alive in the plane after the crash planned and plotted maliciously all the events that happened to them to gain fame. He states they could have left the mountain days before the day they got rescued, but chose to stay longer and go through hunger and lost to become famous and earn money.

Everything about this film is absolutely perfect and so faithful to reality that it moved me to tears due to such a faithful adaptation of the real events of what happened. The depth of the characters, the visuals, the chronology, the narration is beautiful! It definitely tears your soul.
PS: That the director has opted to make the narrative from the perspective of one of the protagonists (Numa) who also dies, transmits a saturation of tremendous emotions. Numar represents the nature of the human being for the gift of doing good, helping others, it is inevitable to feel empathy with him and pain when he dies. I think we all cry when they read that little piece of paper that he leaves with a biblical passage... Simply Beautiful!

In 2005 I went to Mendoza (Argentina) and went to the scene of the accident, near the Las Leñas ski center, in Malargue. An unforgettable experience. To think that if they had gone to the Argentine side (the plane fell in Argentina), 20 kilometers away there was an abandoned hotel and a town where people lived.

9:50. Remember: you don’t “keep cold out,” you keep heat in. That could be an important distinction to remember someday. 🙏

It is very worth noting that they are from a warm country, a coastal country.. they didn't know cold like that of the peaks of the Andes Mountain Range; their bodies also had to get acclimated to the altitude.
When you are that high.. the oxigen levels are so low that your blood doesn't have enough red cells to catch it, so you start getting dizzy and lightheaded, you literally choke WHILE breathing.. and so you panic

What a movie to pick for your first reaction video!
One of the things that really strikes me about this movie is that it's as much about the ones who died as it is about those who survived. The real life stories about what happened in the lives of the survivors is worth another movie in and of itself. Some of the actual survivors had cameos in this movie, interacting with the actors playing their parts

Very nice job, Nixairis. Thank you. I'm also Uruguayan. My best friend's uncle was on the plane (Javier). He survived. Take care.

I'm sure someone mentioned it already but I believe this was actually filmed in the real location the crash happened back in '72. Such an incredible story as well as film

That's a bold choice for a first reaction. Good job. Since you asked, the movie was actually shot in the mountains of Sierra Nevada in Spain, and the VFX team did an amazing job of digitally adding the images of the Andes so it looks like they were actually there. Filming in the actual location would have been really difficult.

What a beautiful reaction when you found out that it was based on a true story.
Glad you did some research and found out Carlitos Páez Rodriguez played his own father in the movie. Fernando Parrado, Dr. Roberto Canessa, Gustavo Zervino, José Luis “Coche” Inciarte (RIP), and a few more also made a cameo in the movie.
It is the most extraordinary survival story there is. This is about resilience, friendship, love and Faith.

Yes it is. In fact there's an old movie from 1993 with etahn hawk and Jhon Malcovich. Also there's a lot of book's written and documentary on you tube.

You shouldn't hide your tears, they are not ugly. There's nothing bad about being moved by a movie, specially if its based in a real story. It makes you real and relatable, be yourself.

A fun fact about the history, is that Sergio Catalan’s wife, invited Nando and Roberto to their golden wedding, when they arrive to the village that is in the side of Chile, in front of Los Andes, called Puente Negro, they saw Sergio in his horse, they went with him and said "Excuse me sir, we’re lost, would you mind helping us again?” 😭💗

This story still amazes me to this day, each time i think about it im surprised at what humans can do when your life depends on it, the whole thing is so horrible and so beautiful at the same time, all interviews with the survivors are very touching, they all went on to have amazing lives that somehow made it all worth it

Hello Nixairis, sorry for my horrible english. but it's just to say that i loved your reaction, the film complies with what it is and what happened, also because of what i know is that there were some more parts that they recorded but they couldn't put them in because of lack of time, and another thing, if you like to know more about the subject, there are photos, more photos, parts of the newspaper, there are interviews (there's the thing, i don't know if in english, sorry hehe), and also the survivors had published a book not everyone got it, but i think two or three. In advance, greetings, sweetness
