Those who say that this performance is not good, they even know what is the meaning of this piece? If you want acrobats go to the circus... Tou need to know about the piece first to know if performance is good or not. This is a very good performance of a Liszt Master.

Totally agree with you. The best version for me. Because he take the time to play all the party. We can hear the violin sometimes … ❤

Maestro Arrau created one of most beautiful moment in which he put so much fresh interpretation in his own tempo. The climax was so *transparent* unlike i heard from other maestros

Exactement.

I don't know, why the algorithm shows this interpretation first when searching for Vallee d'Obermann. It is really a very clear performance. But also very boring: tempi really slow, not much dynamic and completely un-romantic. Compared to the only Horowitz-recording available, definitely not an alternative, althought Horowitz has changed some small parts of the score (which Liszt also did quite often in his performances). This is such a colorful work. Arrau often does take-apart the music instead of letting it flow. For me, Horowitz' interpretation is the most interesting one. He works out colors and harmonics, which Arrau just point at. Arrau is playing quite "angular", Horowitz "round" and smoothly. It is common sence, that in romantic music one can vary tempi, dynamics etc. to underline the emotional aspect of music. Horowitz does it perfectly, Arrau plays it like an accountant who counts notes. For me it does not fit to this piece. Some examples:
    A tempo measure 51: th-cam.com/video/BZ2AqIzHSQw/w-d-xo.html vs th-cam.com/video/9NJxh2gYcS4/w-d-xo.html
    Recitativo: th-cam.com/video/BZ2AqIzHSQw/w-d-xo.html vs. th-cam.com/video/9NJxh2gYcS4/w-d-xo.html
    Lento 1: th-cam.com/video/BZ2AqIzHSQw/w-d-xo.html vs th-cam.com/video/9NJxh2gYcS4/w-d-xo.html
    Lento 2: th-cam.com/video/BZ2AqIzHSQw/w-d-xo.html vs th-cam.com/video/9NJxh2gYcS4/w-d-xo.html
th-cam.com/video/BZ2AqIzHSQw/w-d-xo.html vs. th-cam.com/video/9NJxh2gYcS4/w-d-xo.html (listen to the bass notes, Horowitz piano-singing-magic, Arrau craftsman).
Arrau is varying the tempo so often: th-cam.com/video/BZ2AqIzHSQw/w-d-xo.html vs. th-cam.com/video/9NJxh2gYcS4/w-d-xo.html

I'm pretty sure you know that Arrau was a student of a student of Liszt himself, it deserves probably to give this interpretation a little more credit :D, even though everybody has his own taste ! For sure Arrau playing is less demonstrative than Horowitz, it touches me deeply ! And what a beautiful sound he has

@@trollslendtoribash318 The point is that he expresses his opinion in a derogatory way, which, to begin with, and to finish, his very personal 'judgement" might be there just to say something "shocking" about an artist . As if the fact of daring to despise what an artist does would give you authority ... moreover if the artist is a beloved and respected one ... What I meant is, who cares about what this poor guy (see his nickname!) thinks, probably nobody, whereas many, lots of people care and have cared for Arrau.
