My thoughts on Knuckles' embarrassing mistreatment over the years and how I want him to be directed as. Follow me on Twitter: / antiztheman Sonic the Hedgehog is owned by Sega
I'm a quiet kid but I can't find anything relatable to knuckles and I'm sorry but I don't really like him that much,I tried to like him but couldn't Also I find tails more relatable to the quiet kids
i think making him clumsy, oblivious, naive and shy (around women according to the manuals) are cute character traits for him, as long as they are used to contrast his estoic, introverted and serious self, not to making him look stupid
I liked gem hunting in the adventure games so, I liked the idea of Knuckles being a treasure hunter. They mentioned him being one a couple of times in the game and said he was one in the OVA, they even gave him a cool hat, then they dropped the idea and made him into dumb muscle and comic relief. My guess is he got sidelined because Shadow became the new fan favorite.
Mysticgamer It wasn’t just Shadow taking over as Sonic’s rival, Silver and Blaze also took over important aspects of his character like being naive and getting in over his head when wanting to do the right thing or being a stoic loner guardian learning the meaning of friendship and teamwork(nothing against Blaze, but man was she a blatant knockoff in Rush, good thing they made her more original later on) that likely made SEGA not want to use these character traits on Knuckles anymore. Thing is, there’s not even anything wrong with characters sharing traits as long as it’s addressed in the narrative and you’re not just selling us one character for the price of two. I wouldn’t mind Sonic having two different rivalries going on with both Shadow and Knuckles. I would love to see Knuckles and Blaze talk about the struggles they face as Emerald guardians and bond over the fact that they’re not alone with those after all. But no, this is SEGA we’re talking about.
@@rainpooper7088 I'd love to see Blaze interact with knuckles. I'd like to know if the Sol emeralds would react to the master emerald. I'd like to see Marine mature into Blaze's sidekick and help her on her adventures, maybe Blaze has her version of Angel Island. There is so much sega could do with all the characters it creates but, they just stand around in cutscenes talking and cheering sonic on despite the fact they have powers too.
@@charactersin-depth3472 No problem, man, and being a fan of Knuckles ain't the only reason I subbed, I really do enjoy these awesome videos, not even just the Sonic ones.
Even boom knuckles had good parts in the tv show, he’s compassionate and has more than just being stupid. There’s even a gag exclusive to him in that show where he says something pretty intelligent which shocks the other characters.
@@jjayrichardsfilms How he's being treated like a joke in Sonic Generations, Sonic Lost World, and Sonic Forces like in Sonic Boom. Sonic Generations with how he gets hit in the face by Amy which sends him flying into a tree, and the camera zooms up on him while a goofy sound effect plays. Sonic Lost World with how he's constantly boasting about how much better he could do things than Sonic, and gets carried away by the little animals against his will. Sonic Forces with his plans never working and Operation Big Wave, everyone is just flat out disrespectful to him, and even they treat him like a joke just like how they do with Sonic Boom Knuckles. In the Sonic Twitter Takeover Sonic says something similar to "You didn't bring Knuckles, did you?" I can only see him saying that and having reason to say that in Sonic Boom.
@@jjayrichardsfilms Addressing number 1) Oof, let me correct myself. Knuckles might not have been an idiot in the modern games, but everyone treats him like an idiot and don't like him like how they do in Sonic Boom. You could replace every time I said "joke" in my earlier comment with the word "idiot" and not much would really change. Addressing number 2) I have a lot of problems with the other characters in the new games, don't get me wrong, lol. 😅 The jokes I mentioned might not have been big deals in game, but considering those are the most major things Knuckles has been a part of in the modern games before Forces, they make up his modern character for the most part, especially to the younger fans who got introduced to Knuckles with Sonic Generations and Lost World. I would consider Knuckles a joke and not taken seriously in Sonic Forces, yes. Although I have to admit, in Sonic Forces it seemed like they tried to make him cooler and more serious, but honestly nothing really changed from his Lost World characterization, and all of the plans he comes up with fail. He still got disrespected by everyone, and doesn't at all get treated like the serious commander he was, or at least the serious commander he was meant to be. Operation Big Wave only helps fuel the idiocy and thoughtlessness that the modern Knuckles is thought to have. Operation Big Wave is a plan he made in a minute and a half, (he said that it took him that long to make it) and it is basically where everyone just charges head first into a place controlled by Eggman and try to take it over. That's all there is to it, and it fails miserably, getting 80% of the resistance's forces completely wiped out, and they lost all contact with the rest. Instead of Operation Big Wave being just a head on assault, they could have had the Avatar or a bunch of other rebels be bait to get Infinite to come out and lead Infinite into a trap, where Knuckles, Silver or an army or something could lie in wait to ambush him, or they could have had a few select people somehow sneak to the heart of the place and destroy Eggman's forces from the inside, or something that had more to it than just rushing in, throwing caution to the wind. Even if the resistance's forces get wiped out still, at least it would seem like they tried harder than just charging in without another thought. I got the idea of a trap or ambush for Infinite from in the Classic games, when he set up traps and ambushed Sonic. I personally can't really remember any particular times he bragged in the older games except for maybe in Sonic Battle and maybe in his theme song when he says "Unlike Sonic, I don't chuckle, I'd rather flex my muscles" But that could just be due to my memory, and the fact I haven't played Shadow the Hedgehog, Sonic 06, or Sonic Riders: Zero Gravity. Addressing number 3) You're right, I shouldn't have really brought up the Twitter Takeover. The original commenter said "in the main series," and the Twitter Takeover likely is not relevant to the games. However, it still makes it seem like they're trying to replace the older, experienced fighter Knuckles from the Dark Era and Adventure era and with the Sonic Boom Knuckles, or at least a Knuckles a lot closer to it than the Dark Era one. I still can't really say a lot about it since we haven't even seen Knuckles in the Twitter Takeover yet, but because of Sonic's one line about not wanting Knuckles to be there makes it seem like it will be either the modern Knuckles or something similar to the Sonic Boom Knuckles. Oh goodness, this got really wordy XD. I'm sorry it turned out to be this long, and I'm not trying to appear aggressive or hostile, and if I have, I apologize. My goal is to explain the best I can why people compare him and call him too similar to Sonic Boom Knuckles.
I'm curious, what do you think of Sonic Forces as a whole, and also what do you think of Infinite? (I personally like him, but I think he also suffered from bad writing.) One instance I can think of when Knuckles got disrespected or undermined by someone would be in Aqua Road when he says "Well look at you, rookie. Having fun in the water?" Then Amy says "What, jealous you can't play on the slide, Knuckles?" And Knuckles is just like "Uh, be sure to give it all you got, rookie!" Amy's tone of voice makes it sound like she is calling Knuckles a child. The second instance I can think of is when Knuckles told everyone about Operation Big Wave, and Silver says "Who cares what it's called? What's important is to have a well thought out strategy." (I'll talk more about Operation Big Wave in a moment.) The third instance is when Knuckles says "I don't like sitting on the bench, but there's nothing to do till Tails gets back." Then Amy responds with "Way to jinx it! Metal Sonic has just been spotted in the city!" The way she says it is really condescending. The fourth instance is when Tails said they need a distraction, Knuckles volunteers, and Amy says "No way, Knuckles! You're too *easily* distracted! That's not a good trait for a *distraction.*" Knuckles is far from easily distracted. He was guarding a big emerald on a giant floating island for his entire life without really doing anything else. The fact Amy called Knuckles easily distracted makes it seem as though she is talking to Sonic Boom Knuckles, who I think actually does get easily distracted. The bad writing caused Knuckles to look like a fool, or a joke, or not something to be taken seriously due to his massive failure. It could have been better if Knuckles hadn't said it took him a minute and a half to create the plan, and if Knuckles hadn't said "Looks like our big wave has washed out." then it wouldn't have been nearly as bad. But as it is, Knuckles didn't really seem to really care about the fact he had sent 80% of their forces to die, and they lost contact with the rest all because of a plan that had one step to it and seemed to not hardly any thought put into it. I am sure Knuckles must have done okay to have kept the resistance and the world alive for as long as he did, but I wouldn't say he had successfully lead them to victory, that was more of Tails' thing. Tails was the one to come up with the plan to beat Eggman at the end, and Knuckles was just the encouragement. Knuckles also had their forces spread really thin, with no backup squad or anything to cover for emergencies, which was why they had to send a single rookie to go take care of a lot of things, although that last bit is a personal nitpick of mine, so you don't have to take it seriously to the discussion. In the Japanese version of Sonic Adventure 1, doesn't he sound more calm than the English voice actor? I can only think of three times right off the top of my head of him getting angry, all being at Chaos. The first time being when the Master Emerald gets shattered, and the second time being when Chaos gets upgraded into Chaos 4, and the time he ran into Chaos 6. There is another time he could be seen as angry, when Sonic asks him if Knuckles had been tricked again, but it's less of angry, and more of just really embarrassed. In the Japanese version of Sonic Adventure 2, he gets angry at Rouge for trying to steal the Master Emerald, but he still sounds relatively calm. He does get more angry when they are in that space shuttle and on their way to the ARK when they hit a meteor and the Master Emerald shards fly into the void that is space, but that is completely understandable. He generally doesn't sound as calm in the Japanese as opposed to the English in Sonic Adventure 2, but it's less of angry, more like he's having more emotions in general, like shock, relief, etc. In Sonic Heroes' Japanese, he just sounds chill lol, although he does get kinda scared sometimes, same with 06. Although in Sonic Battle, even in the English he's a hothead who seems angry 60% of the time at least, which I don't completely agree with since it more or less goes against the rest of his character that was shown at that point, more so resembling Sonic X's Knuckles than Knuckles in the mainline games. I can't really say anything about Sonic Rush, but if he bragged a lot and acted like Sonic Battle Knuckles and modern Knuckles, I probably wouldn't agree with that characterization much either, and it would contradict the other games where he is more calm and cool. As for his bragging at the end of Sonic Heroes, I would call it less of bragging, more like friendly banter, or bringing Sonic back down to Earth. Knuckles had said "Talk about cutting it close." Which Sonic replied with "Ehh, not really!" Then Knuckles said "Come on, tell me you weren't scared. Without us, you wouldn't have had a chance." The way Knuckles said what he said made it seem like banter instead of bragging. He also included Tails by saying ''us," instead of saying just himself because they were a team in that game, they all did it together, it wasn't just Sonic. It's all about the deliveries the voice actors give and the body language. Knuckles does get jealous of Sonic for being able to go and see the world, but he doesn't let his jealousy get in the way of seeing Sonic as a friend. Knuckles isn't spiteful or resentful towards Sonic. He may be called egotistical by SEGA, but he certainly doesn't seem so in the older games, outside of maybe his theme song, Sonic Battle, the Rush games, and maybe Sonic Rivals too, but I haven't played Sonic Rivals, so I wouldn't know.
No, don't rush it. Sonic 2 was Tail's debut so it's fitting the sequel focus on the duo getting to know each other, I think they should wait until the third movie. Maybe a teaser with Knuckles at the end of 2. Then, we get Sonic 3 & Knuckles baby!
The only good thing that ever came out of boom knuckles: "You know Amy, anytime somebody calls attention to the breaking of gender rolls, it ultimately undermines the concept of gender equality, by implying that this is an exception and not the status quo"
I agree Knuckles the Echidna is one of the most interesting characters on the Sonic franchise, he may be hot headed and gullible as usual, but he’s an interesting character, in SA1 we learned why he’s protecting the Master Emerald, in Sonic Heroes we learned how he shared an unbreakable bound with his pals Sonic and Tails, and in Sonic Forces, we learned about his leadership of the resistance. While some guys at SEGA think of him as a joke, the only people that I know who gives Knuckles the good treatment are the writers of the Archie comics and Ken “I hate to say it because he ruined the Timeline!” Penders. In conclusion, we should take Knuckles seriously and not as a comic relief, like in Sonic Boom.
Archie knuckles is one of the best characters across all sonic media. Very underrated and a complex character. He keeps his seriousness from the old games but he felt like an actual teenager dealing with teenage emotions all while juggling being a hero.
Algalax2 The owner of Sonic Mach 2 I don’t agree with giving credit to Ken Penders for Archie Knuckles. He may have created the lore but Ian Flynn wrote him so much better after Ken left
When you said “Knuckles is a HERO, Quiet kids need heroes too.” I felt that. Knuckles being an introvert and his locs are what made him intriguing to I. And I like the color red.
I feel like the reason they keep shoving Knuckles in every game is because he's one of the first characters in the series which gives him a more iconic representation for the franchise (and also nowadays too many people say the genesis titles are the only good games ergo he's one of the only good characters, even though this logic is fallacious), but unlike Tails who is always ready to go on adventures with Sonic, Knuckles has a duty as a guardian, a role to fulfill and therefore several of the games need to shove his original purpose aside to make him fit in which only disservice the character. Not saying the Master Emerald needs to be involved in every game he's in, Zero Gravity did give him some substance by reminding us that he is a treasure hunter as well, but as you say, they decided to make him the comic relief to compensate for all the times he wasn't needed which is a problem. Not to mention Pontaff clearly didn't do their research so now we're stuck with even more comic relief moments for him. I can partially excuse Boom on the account that it is meant to be a different series and the characters are therefore allowed to be different from their original counterparts, but the fact that it affected his main portrayal does make it unpleasant. I'm starting to ramble a lot here so I'll just bring closure by saying that Knuckles doesn't have to be in every game, especially if they're going to treat him like that.
This is basically how I see him. The best Sonic character who believes in redemption while shrouded in mystery. As an introvert, Knuckles had become a role model more than Sonic ever has.
You make a good point. He is underrated and should be brought back to his peak and not just a side character to tell a story. Welcome back by the way.👏👍
When I was a kid, my first Sonic game was Sonic Adventure 2 Battle. I loved playing it everyday along with Smash Bros Melee. My favorite character was Sonic or Knuckles. I honestly couldn’t choose between the two, but I knew they were the heroes. I wanted to be important, just like they were. In the end, I chose Knuckles. I guess I related with him the most, being a stubborn loner. But unlike me, he was cool. He wasn’t someone you want to mess around with. He literally made even Super Sonic into a joke. I wanted to be just like him. Sonic OVA, Sonic Adventure 2, and Heroes were some of my favorite portrayals of him. He was laidback. He was easygoing. He cared about his friends. But I guess Sonic X disagreed with me. It’s not like he didn’t have a temper, but in that anime, his whole character was a hothead. Easily getting angered... easily turned into a joke... He wasn’t chill at all, and most of the time, he only cared about proving that he was better than Sonic. It was never important for his character, but for some reason, they exaggerated it, and now he was just a hothead. I only saw him as a comic relief in Sonic X. Only there just to make Sonic look good. I guess it’s not the worst portrayal of his character, but it was the start of something worst. Now the games took cues from Sonic X, and even further, being a joke was the only thing about him. To be honest, Boom Knuckles was the best thing to happen to Knuckles character. He may be dumb. But unlike in the main games, he had a character. A purpose. That’s kind of sad. Knuckles isn’t as naive as people think he is. Every time Knuckles is tricked, it’s by Dr. Eggman or Rouge, who are known to be very deceptive. Dr. Eggman has an IQ of 300 and has tricked Sonic and Tails way more times than Knuckles has. 1. Sonic Adventure. Sonic and Tails defeated the Egg Hornet (the first Eggman boss), and Dr. Eggman faked his defeat, tricking Sonic and Tails into letting his guard down, and Tails for some reason decided to let Eggman take it. 2. Sonic Adventure 2. Trying to save Amy, Sonic and Tails decides to trade a fake emerald to get her back, not knowing Dr. Eggman knows it’s a fake. Sonic walked in the exact spot Dr. Eggman told him to, and Sonic got trapped. Then Tails told him that the emerald was fake, which led Sonic to scold him, almost killing Sonic in outer space. 3. Sonic Battle. After collecting all 7 Emeralds, Dr. Eggman came out of know where, and told them about the Death Egg. Even Tails himself found it suspicious that Dr. Eggman would just tell them without keeping a secret. But it was a trap, which they fell for, and giving us one of the most saddest deaths in the franchise. 4. Sonic Riders. Dr. Eggman hosted a tournament to “see who’s the fastest” and to enter, all you needed was to give him the chaos emeralds. And Sonic did. Without thought. Even Knuckles was suspicious of him. 5. Sonic Unleashed. When Sonic turned into Super Sonic and chased after Dr. Eggman. Dr. Eggman “turned a new leaf”, distracting Sonic, which turned him into the Werehog. 6. Sonic 06. Where Sonic wanted to trade the chaos emerald for Elise, which is the same trick from Adventure 2. Even Tails knew it was a trap. 7. Sonic 1. In Scrap Brain Zone, Sonic fell into a dead end, which Dr. Eggman made him go through act 3 which was basically Labyrinth zone. 8. Sonic R. When Sonic got tricked into a racing tournament (read the manual). 9. Sonic Labyrinth. Where Sonic got tricked into wearing slow mo sneakers (read the manual). 10. Sonic Heroes. Eggman: Once again, you fools have been tricked. Sonic: Drat. A trap to stall for time! Every time Knuckles got tricked, we never see why, but it’s safe to assume that Dr. Eggman, a man with an IQ of 300, used a cunning plan to trick him. I related with Knuckles because he was a loner. This means, by nature, Knuckles doesn’t trust anybody, which is why he’s so quick to believe when Sonic is the bad guy, which is always how he gets tricked. Sonic Adventure was the first time we see exactly how he gets tricked. Because Sonic was trying to collect the Master Emerald shards. Of course, Knuckles didn’t believe Eggman from the beginning. He believed him until he mistaken Sonic with the emerald shards. We could assume this was the same in Sonic 3. Dr. Eggman told him that Sonic had the Chaos emeralds, which he did, but he assumed he was the bad guy. Did he believe Dr. Eggman was the good guy? No. He hid it in the hidden palace zone. Naïveté is something we all have. Knuckles has trust issues, Sonic and Tails gets overconfident. But they have wisdom too. Knuckles is a MASTER martial artist. They train in discipline and experience. This is the guy who wanted to ask Sonic for advice when the island was still falling in Sonic Adventure. This is the guy who forgave Rouge, which was the main message of Sonic Adventure 2; forgiveness. This is the guy who knew Sonic needed Tails and his help in Sonic Heroes, which Sonic agrees to, to Knuckles surprise. This is the guy who stated the main message of Sonic Shuffle. “Dreams don’t betray us. It’s not that dreams don’t come true. We just gave up on them”. In the games, Knuckles only got tricked by Dr. Eggman and Rouge. When we do see him get trick, he usually has proof. But in Sonic X, he gets tricked by EVERYONE! And just to make him look like an idiot! Knuckles was tricked just because he was obsessed with beat Sonic. Without. Question. I hate Sonic X and how he turned out. He was a calm introvert, who made other people look like jokes. A character that I related to and idolized. But now he’s some meathead who constantly yells when he’s angry at things. Now he’s the butt of ALL JOKES. Ever since the OK KO special where he literally gave the Master Emerald just because someone asked, I lost all hope as a Knuckles fan. No more will this quiet kid have his favorite character.
What you said really got to me. As sad as it is, comedic Knuckles is how he's seen to the public's eye. They won't see that a relatable loner is what kids need.
It's amazing how many people overlook just how manipulative Dr. Robotnik can be. It's one of the main things that makes him such an effective villain. He's literally manipulated almost every character in the series at some point, and has only ever been manipulated himself once, by Shadow in SA2. To Knuckles' credit, after Robotnik fools him again in SA1, Knux is pretty much done with his garbage and doesn't fall for it ever again. If anything, he automatically DISBELIEVES everything Robotnik says from there on out, moreso even than Sonic tends to. I'd love to see another installment where Robotnik uses that to his advantage and manipulates Knuckles by actually telling him the TRUTH, knowing he'll automatically assume the opposite. Those are the sort of character dynamics that I miss oh so much...
OUTBACK The whole, Knuckles getting tricked thing has definitely gone cliche. I would actually love if Knuckles tricked Dr. Eggman into thinking he was pulling the operation, but Knuckles used him to his advantage instead. Knuckles was originally very sly as shown in the Mecha Sonic fight in Sonic & Knuckles, where he deceives them into thinking he was useless. It can also show how much Knuckles has changed over the years.
The Chill Knuckles Fan I’m going to have to disagree on what you said about Knuckles in Sonic X. While yes, I do agree he is a bit more of a hot head, but to simply write off this interpretation of Knuckles as ‘comic relief’ or a ‘character who’s only there to make Sonic look good,’ just isn’t right. Yes, Knuckles is shown to get angry a lot in Sonic X, however he still isn’t dumb. Sonic X Knuckles is still the same guy from the Adventure era, however they just gave him some new additions to his personality. His rivalry with Sonic is probably one of my favourite things in Sonic X. They both respect each other, however they’re not afraid to compete against each other either. Knuckles started out pretty much where he left off by the end of Sonic 3. While he wasn’t afraid to help Sonic, he still had trouble trusting him. Sonic X is before the adventure era, so we see Knuckles slowly begin to respect Sonic more and more. In season 1, Knuckles was the only character who had any real trouble adjusting to his new environment. He just wanted be home, he just wanted to be with the Master Emerald. That’s why he was much more of a hot head in the beginning, however overtime, he got use to his new setting and began to settle in with Sonic and his friends. Honestly, watching Knuckles struggle to accept his new setting felt very relatable to me. I’ve always had trouble adapting when put in an environment that was new to me. So, watching Knuckles deal with the same issue and slowly learn to appreciate it was really inspiring to me as a kid. Knuckles in Sonic X, is probably my favourite interpretation of the character. While he’s clumsy and has a temper, I kinda find that charming. I felt like he was the perfect balance between calm, but a little goofy, and serious, smart and badass. He grows all throughout the show, his rivalry with Sonic and Rouge is always fun to watch, and watching him struggle to adapt to his new setting felt very relatable to me. Overall, I really like Knuckles’ character in Sonic X.
Knuckles is indeed a great character that is done injustice. Great video. Glad to see your still at it, man. I hope people see your content since it is very needed in this climate and is high quality. Good Luck!
Thanks, man. I'll make sure this channel's much better than Mr. Retrospective. I was so green back then. I sounded so monotone and I slurred my "s"s. Looks like those voice acting classes are starting to pay off. What I like the most about this new channel is that I'm just gonna get straight to the point in shorter videos. This only took me a couple of days of editing.
Knuckles: Quiet and introverted SEGA: Dumb Shadow: Also quiet and introverted SEGA: Edgy Flanderization barely makes any sense, but this one begs to take the cake
@@jamiegioca9448 Amy Rose: Friendly and intelligent. SEGA: Crazy stalker fangirl! Tails: Humble and intelligent. SEGA: Coward! Sonic: Inspirational and caring. SEGA: Misogynist! Eggman: Complex and neutral. SEGA: OH HO HO, HE’S JUST A ONE-DIMENSIONAL VILLAIN WHO WOULD EVEN TAKE HIMSELF AS A JOKE!
This is so true. Knuckles in his debut game had a role set in stone for him: Being the Guardian of the Master Emerald. That’s essentially the space where they were able to create his character in. Every plot of the earlier games that involved him had him involved because the Master Emerald was involved. Without the M.E, then he serves no purpose to the plot other than just being “one of Sonic’s friends” when in reality, he’s much more than just one of Sonic’s friends. Literally his own theme songs in SA1 and 2 explain his character to the listener. The rap songs in SA2 weren’t just there to be hip and modern. They were used to provide for Knuckles’ personality AND perspective on each level he was exploring in, even giving a bit of background to the levels themselves like Aquatic Mine for example. Death Chamber gave a bit of insight on Sonic and Knuckles’ relationship in the ost version of the song. That was such perfect use for his character and to the environment that he explored in. That gave even more depth to his personality and world building to the world of Sonic as a result and I freaking love it. I love it when rap songs are used that way because it shows that they’re not just used to be all hip and edgy, they’re also used for philosophy, personality, and perspective upon the world around them, just like what all other forms of music can be used for. Hunnid P is a great rapper and perfectly captures the character and art of Knuckles. Knuckles is his own character, a character with an established role and purpose within the world of Sonic alongside one of the most important elements that exist in that world. Knuckles and the Master Emerald form a yin-yang, meaning that you just simply can’t have one without the other or else they’re not going to function on their own unless you were to completely rewrite their core character. If they’re going to drop Knuckles into the main stories in which he serves less importance to the plot in, then they’re going to have to get the Master Emerald involved in some shape or form. Stories like Sonic Heroes and Sonic ‘06 would’ve been the perfect stories to get the Master Emerald involved in, but for some reason, they disregarded the Master Emerald despite it being one of the most important elements in the world of Sonic. Hell, even Sonic X understood his character and interlink with the Master Emerald. Both Knuckles and the Master Emerald together are extremely important elements to the world of Sonic. Knuckles is yes, one of the most recognizable and iconic characters of Sonic The Hedgehog, but just like Shadow, you can’t just have a popular character involved in the plot just because their popular, they have to serve an actual purpose and impact to the writing just like how they did before they were even popular. And even then, the writing itself has to be consistent and make sense. Sonic Team in most games, had forgotten what kind of character and role that Knuckles had, and it carried over to others also believing that this is what he is and this is his purpose when in reality, it’s not and it never was. But Knuckles isn’t the only misunderstood Sonic character really. A lot of the Sonic characters get mistreated, misunderstood, and get turned into a false parody version of their former selves and they end up being defined as such and get undeserved crap for it. These characters aren’t bad, in fact, they were never bad at the beginning. Not saying they’re perfect characters by default, in which no. No character at all in existence is perfect by default, they all have their flaws and can have more to expand and improve upon as characters. They were simply underestimated, misunderstood, and deserve to be handled in much better ways in which they can be their true and ideal selves. Even characters who ended getting screwed over in their debut, like Silver, half of Mephiles (well, pretty much Solaris and ‘06 as a whole), Blaze in ‘06, and Elise deserve better because ‘06 was a rushed out game and story after all. They all feel like such innocent characters who unfortunately ended up getting mistreated and misunderstood afterwards. It depresses me since I love so many of them so damn much. Sonic Team underestimates the importance of these characters and in turn, it’s made a majority act the same way. It should’ve never been this way to begin with but it all happened due to irresponsibility. Literally Gamma is probably one of the only Sonic characters to also have a good role and one of the most emotional stories and impact, but be left alone and not butchered later on to become a parody of his former self. Also, in Secret Rings and Black Knight’s defense, he was there because it wasn’t the actual, canonical self of him. Rather, it was only a fairy tale parallel of him that had a much more different role, personality, and backstory in those parallel worlds just like what was done with all the other characters in those two games except for Sonic himself who really had his character shine in those games.
Literally I sense that, unlike others, Gamma is one of the most developed characters in the all franchise, thanks the fact SEGA doesn't have butchered him bringing him in the other titles (except Sonic Battle, I think).
I'm 55% sure that if Knuckles was carrying the Master Emerald along with him in Heroes and 06 (like in Adventure 2) most problems with his involvement in this games would be solved. Not *all* of them, but at least the majority
Knuckles is one of my top 5 favorite Sonic characters. His back story was always so intriguing to me and I think it's INSULTING to see just how badly the guardian of the Master Emerald has been treated over the last decade. (To the point that the Master Emerald itself is practically NON-EXISTENT now!) Knuckles deserves SO much better, both as a major character and as an ally to Sonic.
@@charactersin-depth3472 Exactly. The Master Emerald really only shows up as "fan-service" in games now and that's if it's lucky to show up at all. It's a shame that it's been left behind when it (like Knuckles) still has potential for the Sonic series.
Knuckles was once viewed as an awesome character to ending up as a joke to the fandom next to other characters like Silver. Sonic Boom does not help make Knuckles be viewed as the cool character he really is. I hate how much of a meme he became. Knuckles is so much more then a comedy relief character. Hes relatable. Thank you for this video!
Exactly! He's not my favorite, but I'm so sad that he's been reduced to this idiot, comic relief side character and that people seem to think that's how he always been. Knuckles is naive, but who wouldn't be if you spent all your time alone on an island for pretty much your whole life? I wish they'll restore him to his former glory as an amazingly complex character.
Not only did Knuckles get fixed in the second movie, he also got fixed in the Sonic Frontiers prologue short, which was incredibly fire. Hope that continues in the game itself.
I've always loved Knuckles, he was a great character for a long time. The Boom and Colours era has ruined him, as it really ruined practically every character. I hope one day Sonic Team returns to good gameplay and writing, then Knuckles can return to his old jazz-laden hotheaded glory...
Knuckles basically lost any purpose in the games, he was supposed to be the guardian of the Master Emerald, but since he doesn't appear to do that anymore, he lost much of his personality. I would really like if they ever give him an important role in a Sonic game again
One thing I wish was mentioned in this video is that Knuckles is naive due to pretty much his entire life being spent isolated on Angel Island with the master emerald. This only applies to S3&K but it still adds to Knuckles being introverted and quiet, it could even relate to kids who struggle with a lot of problems and then struggle to fit in with others since Knuckles struggled with Sonic and friends focusing on his sole duty to protect the emeralds alone he can’t do much outside of what life forced him to do. It’s even more highly implied that his parents have died since (correct me if I’m wrong) echidnas isolated themselves on Angel Island and Knuckles is the last of his kind, feeling pressure to keep the emerald safe and the last living piece of his family legacy alive.
Great video. The reason why I love Knuckles the Echidna so much is because he may start off as evil to becoming a reliable partner to Sonic. The only reason why he started evil because Eggman tricked Knuckles into thinking Sonic and Tails are stealing the Master Emerald. Even tho Knuckles gets tricked a lot, he does often realize the mistakes and tries to fix those mistakes he made. He's also there to guard the Master Emerald. Yes I know the Master Emerald looks like a simple task, but the reason why the Master Emerald is there because it's the most powerful Emerald to date, hence to a reason why it powers the Chaos Emeralds to Super Emeralds and the reason why Sonic 3 & Knuckles was so wonderful. Also Knuckles is very responsible and tries to protect the Master Emerald with good care especially when he goes treasure hunting to find the lost pieces. And like you mentioned, the past with the Echidna tribe is quite a dark story. Knuckles is also very reliable. He's a really strong character that wants to help out Sonic and Tails on their journey, and he does because he cares. It's a bummer how Sonic Team doesn't realize that and it's like they wanted Knuckles to be a comic relief. Especially how Generations, Boom, and even Lost World made him funny but that's not how he's suppose to be portrayed. Hopefully Knuckles will get improved a lot in Sonic's 30th Anniversary, I mean Sonic Mania helped Knuckles improve so hopefully we can see if Sonic's 30th Anniversary will be better for Knuckles and even other characters. I think it's better if the fans help out just like what they did with Sonic Mania.
Steve Spud: ever since Luigi's Mansion, Luigi is portrayed as extremely cowardly and nowadays he doesn't do anything other than shiver and look scared towards literally anything he sees. I certainly don't call that developed considering Luigi was easily as brave as Mario at one time.
@@GSS1Sirius Did you even play Dark Moon or Luigi's Mansion 3? Sure he gets frightened but he faces his fears with great courage and manages to save Mario in both games. That's not even counting what he does in the platformers like Galaxy, Galaxy 2, 3D World and so on.
@@GSS1Sirius He's scared but he overcomes his fears to save his dear brother. Three times. It actually makes him quite admirable. Compare that to Tails who lets Sonic get "killed" by Infinite and hides behind a rock. In fact, Luigi is actually playable and is right up front in the action a majority of the time. He has four of his own games and an RPG that revolves almost entirely around him with Mario taking the backseat. He just has an irrational fear of ghosts.
Thank you. I absolutely DESPISE what they've done to knuckles. With them deciding to keep bringing back shadow, I feel like that has also been a big factor as they think there's too many serious characters if they have both knuckles and shadow around, and so started down the path of making him just dumb and stupid. I hate it.
This video really got me. I grew up with the games where Knuckles is an idiot and all that junk so I never really liked him. But seeing this made me put more thought into him, like I’m a quiet, introverted kid who likes thinking about life. Now he is one of my favorite characters. And you just got a new sub.
Knuckles is my favorite character back in the 93's to now! It's tick me off how sonic team and Sega made modern knuckles look all worried because he's a comedy character. Knuckles should be a respectable character sonic team should know about.
First of all: You’re making great content. You deserve more subscribers. Second: I agree with everything you’ve said in this video, and the first Sonic game I played, the first Sonic game that I saw Knuckles, and experienced his character, was Sonic Heroes. I didn’t even grow up with his classic and 2D interpretation. The mixup he had in Sonic 3 & Knuckles where he thought Sonic was the villain was understandable because he was a lot younger back then. In Sonic Adventure it makes less sense. In universe, that game takes place where the main cast is mostly teenagers not kids, and while I expect Knuckles to be smarter, I understand that Sonic Team was under a lot of pressure with this game. The way he acts now just makes him a nonsensical character. He doesn’t make sense psychologically speaking. I remember hearing somewhere that since he grew up mostly in isolation, that it makes him gullible and too trusting of others. That’s absolutely fucking stupid. Psychology 101: Isolation causes people to become more DIStrusting of others, and causes them to lack understanding of social norms. TLDR; I like your content. I agree with everything you’ve said about Knuckles. Have a good day.
Thanks. Knuckles' psychology in 3&K may not perfectly reflect real life, but it did function as an organic reason for his role as temporary antagonist.
Oh no he was distrustful, of Sonic, Eggman told him horror stories of the hedgehog and his guardian status hyjacked control and wanted to stop this monster
Chronicles did a nice thing with Knuckles that I'd love to see come back. Towards the end the characters split into two teams, Knuckles' team opening the way for Sonic's team to fight Imperator Ix. Knuckles however leads his team to talk to Ix instead. When told how risky that is Knuckles affirms that he wants to believe there's good in everyone, and doesn't want to see a member of his own race fall if they could simply find a common ground, and that he has to try. Naturally it doesn't go well but rather than being portrayed as gullible or stupid, he's portrayed as somebody who'd rather take a chance at talking things out before resorting to fighting.
Not to mention the fact that instead of beat up Chaos like other echidnas (cough cough Pachacamac tribe), he would instead take consideration of their wants and needs like he would do with his own, the same treatment he would later give Sonic, Tails and Amy Rose. #MyKnuckles
Good point about knuckles being good for introverted kids. Marketing often neglects this. Only/older children who had a lot of responsibilities can relate his lonely serious past protecting the emeralds while other kids were out having fun (sonic).
Can we talk about how calm he was in the Adventure games as opposed to the later ones? Like he'd fight if he was provoked but he wasn't over the top and stupid
In Sonic X: Just consider the fact that he's ignored and mocked by others, even by his own friends when he disagrees with their thinking. And not to mention that he doesn't get a lot of gratitude or respect for risking his life to save others. Knuckles largely exists as a Commander Contrarian to the team that desires to take more desperate measures to get back home. While he has a bad attitude (especially where Sonic is concerned) and some of his ethics like trusting Eggman over and over are genuinely short sighted, the team tend to demean him over any point he makes (a few of which are rather valid and likely would have led to less disastrous results if followed, though of course this is never called out). It doesn't help that most of the time he argues with them he is tricked or bullied into following through rather than reasoned with in any way, despite the team endlessly pointing out how wrong it is when Eggman manipulates him in a similar manner.
agreed Knuckles in Sonic X he's very powerful strong. Here he can evenly match Sonic and dodge his attacks and lift massive objects he's just as capable and reliable as Sonic but all the other especially (Amy) disrespect Knuckles and treat him like absolute dogshit who's just an illiterate hothead when Amy in this series is far worse than Knuckles. Knuckles although grumpy and short tempered sees the best in everyone and is always willing to give them second chances. Amy is a spoiled annoying bratty bitch who has a far worse temper, stalks Sonic like a crazy fangirl and goes crazy when he leaves her and is bossy, thickheaded, stupid and when angered Amy literally burns with fire and threatens and sometimes physically assaults her own friends. Out all of Knuckles so called "friends" Sonic is arguably Knuckles only buddy. Despite fighting from time to time and Sonic playfully teases him Sonic truly respects Knuckles and forgives him for his shortcomings
I love Knuckles, and what you said about the Sonic games is absolutely true. Every line is an attempt at being "funny," or just generally bad writing. I think they need to focus a bit more on the story, unafraid of "drama." Although I think what they're trying to do is avoid another Shadow the Hedgehog situation...
THANK YOU! Somebody who understands the core values that make Knuckles who he is and how he had been completely and utterly butchered in all recent titles. Earned a like from me!
@@charactersin-depth3472 Of course! I watched your other videos on sonic characters and I have to say they are all fantastic and extremely on point, as someone who also greatly enjoys talking about characters in an in depth manner you have my respect, keep up the great work!
everything you've said is everything i could never put into words. you explain his character perfectly, and how they've screwed him up. it's a shame seeing such an amazing character be turned into just the butt of the joke, i hope to see more of his old personality soon
Man, I’d love a Knuckles origin story game. Maybe show what he was up to before Eggman came into the picture. Imagine climbing and gliding through an open world, completely explorable 3D Angel Island!
Truer words have never been spoken, I couldn't of explained what made Knuckles a great character any better than you if I tried. I love Knuckles so much, he's one of my favourite characters of all time.
It's depressing watching such a badass character get turned into a literal joke. The modern sonic writers just clearly don't know how to write *any* of the cast. It's like they're all ridiculous poorly understood stereotypes of themselves.
THANK YOU!!!!!!!! Finally, someone showing Knuckles for who he is!!! I’m sick of the “Hur durrr Imma idiot!!!” character he’s been portrayed as lately, and especially when it rubs off on the fans that when they see Knuckles, they think “lol moron!”
I also like the way he was portrayed in the Mania shorts. From his instant suspicion on meeting Ray, to him just smacking Metal Sonic’s ass up, grabbing the Master Emerald, and promptly leaving to go back to Angel Island.
I love this video. I’ve been trying to put my opinion on how knuckles is handled into words for a while and this basically was what I was looking for. Hope that Sonic frontiers gives Knuckles (if he’s in that game) a better narrative due to Ian Flynn being writer
Good video. I miss the raps that accompany his character, and his cool composure. It's a shame that they don't know how to write for him anymore. P.S. I have to disagree with you on MCU Spider-Man, as he has amazing heartfelt scenes in both movies, with Far From Home's breakdown scene being legitimately heartbreaking. But, I digress. Good stuff!
The thing is Knuckles mistakes in Sonic 3 and Sonic Adventure were reasonable. As they were more connected with his fanatical sense of duty. --Sonic 3 - He never truly cooperated with Eggman. He simply took his advice that Sonic might be stealing his Emerald, and he wanted to get him away from Angel Island --Sonic Adventure - He never had close friendship with Sonic. He trusted him, but it wasn't close friendship. He never trusted Eggman that much when he learned that Sonic took emeralds, (only when he notice him holding green emerald)
I loved playing as Knuckles as a kid with SA1 and SA2. I wish they could develop Knuckles’ character like that again. I definitely agree with your points in this video
Knuckles has been a slapstick character as long as hes been around. He falls off the scaffolding in launch base zone. He chuckles. He gets zapped and beaten and always gets back up. Hes tough. In the OVA he has a lot of jokes just for him, usually physical humor like getting bonked on the head, blasted at, and falling over. I think it contrasts with his serious and mellowdramatic character well. You can keep knuckles as a stern dramatic character, as long as you occasionally break that tension back into kid friendly funny territory with a little degrading humor like "ok knuckles, dont take yourself too seriously."
Something I think would be cool is giving him and arc and storyline that relives him of his duty to the Master Emerald. Okay hear me out, it would be a story that explores his relationship with his own heritage and further explores his purpose, culminating in a conclusion to the story of the Master Emerald and allowing Knuckles to finally be free from the burden of his own heritage. This is a very broad strokes idea that would need to be fully developed, but the idea is that it give Knuckles new avenues to grow and develop. He has been so defined by his purpose that once you take that away, he'll begin to question what he truly wants. This could lead to him becoming a treasure hunter, an explorer, traveler, even Sonic Rider Zero Gravity gives us a peak into this characterization when they discuss the Gigan Rocks and how it's well known amongst treasure hunter. I feel as though Knuckles becoming an archeologist would be the logical next step to take his character. It's also a profession that leans in to this idea of Knuckles being that introverted teenager that likes to take in his surrounding and search every nook and cranny, maybe leaning into a more studious side of his character as well. And traveling the world would broaden his horizons, meet new people, engage with new cultures like in Sonic Unleashed, and allowing him to grow into a much more learned individual with more experience under his belt. Something I think would be even more incredible is highlight the similarities and differences between Knuckles and Sonic. Sonic is about moving fast and taking everything within a zone, while Knuckles as previously mentioned takes everything in at a much slower pace, but both would become world travelers who have seen a lot of the world. They would have their fundamental differences that won't change, but they would have a greater understanding of the other because of their experiences traveling the world. Kinda like how they got along and butted heads in the Sonic OVA (also I really want to see Knuckles with the hat again I just saiyan). I think the other added benefit would be that no one would have to question why Knuckles is in a new adventure, since it could be that everything's going down in the middle of his travels and he decides to help out. I mean that's just me.
Knuckles was the first and best Rival to Sonic. He wasn't a joke back then like he is now. Knuckles needs to be done right. We need Adventure Knuckles.
technically Metal Sonic was the first rival of Sonic. Knuckles honestly isn't a rival , his goals and motives almost have NOTHING to do with Sonic unless he thinks Sonic is stealing his emerald. But yes make Knuckles good again. I'm saying make him surpass Sonic but make him relevant to the plot, make him useful and make him have a few unique abilities.
@@donathan2933 I looked it up to make sure and yes you are right Metal Sonic was his first rival, but I still think that Knuckles was a good rival to Sonic as he would push him to be stronger. he is a friend to Sonic and the others of course, honestly when Sonic and Knuckles fight I always see it as an amazing rival battle.
Just a quick reminder that they actually wanted to put knuckles in Sonic Unleashed instead of the werehog because of his connection to the chaos emeralds but they replaced him with the werehog because they had enough of people making fun of the "Sonic's gay friends" thing. If they would've included him I'm pretty sure they would've portrayed him better in the newer games.
I think that he was definitely the best character in sonic frontiers. Especially in that one scene when he was chilling with sonic in ares island. I liked how they were fighting at a moment then shaking hands afterwards, it shows that while sonic and knuckles are quite the rivals, but deep down they're still good friends
I've never seen knuckles as a comic relief I've always seen him as a hot headed rival/friend to Sonic but that's probably because I've mostly played the classic and adventure games
I think I like the youtube fan Knuckles character the best of all Knuckles. In my opinion that is how I would imagine Knuckles to develop as a character. He gets some real friends, and even though he is still alone a lot of the time he relaxes a bit and gets certain wisdom to him. Most importantly he is not stupid, he was never supposed to be stupid!
So true, which didn’t use to be the case, because in Sonic OVA, Sonic 3 & Knuckles and the Adventure games, Knuckles had his 1990s charm which is that he was both powerful and intelligent as the Guardian of the Master Emerald he was supposed to be, back before the time he got fired for acting like an idiotic asshole because Sega couldn’t write him liek they used to anymore as of the mid-2000s since Sonic Heroes when he whined “Are you playing with that girl (Amy Rose)‘s heart again, Sonic?”. It’s not like Meta Era Knuckles had the most respect for women either (except for the cartoon with that feminist line).
"His debut in S3&K established him as one of the most unique characters from the Classic Era!" As someone who grew up in the Classic Era, it seemed to me like the common attitude towards him could be summed up with "WAAH, I DON'T LIKE STINKY RED SONIC! HE'S NOTHING BUT A STUPID RECOLOUR OF THE MAIN CHARACTER! HOW LAZY! WHAT OTHER VIDEO GAMES DO THAT? AND WHY DOES THE GAME KEEP HAVING TO STOP AND FORCE ME TO WATCH HIM PRESS A STUPID BUTTON? JUST LET ME PLAY THE GAME! WHY IS HE EVEN HERE? IT'S CALLED SONIC THE HEDGEHOG! HE'S NOT SONIC, SO THEY SHOULD JUST GET RID OF HIM! TAILS TOO! NOBODY LIKES THEM! JUST HAVE SONIC AND DR ROBOTNIK! And maybe Princess Sally! She's fine cos she makes my Pee Pee feel funny! BUT ALL THE OTHER CHARACTERS SUCK! REEEEE!" And honestly, it feels like this insanely negative, and unfairly bias attitude has never really gone away! Even when these characters were at their best, many people just saw them as "Sonic's Stupid Friends" and felt that the games and Sonic himself would be better off without them. THAT, I truly believe, is the reason that they've been so mistreated and sidelined for the most recent games. Sega thinks "Well, if the fans don't care about them, why should we care about them?" The irony being that so many years of fans calling the Sonic supporting cast "annoying and pointless" has lead to Sega changing them and making them way more annoying and pointless than they ever truly were in the first place! So good job Sega and good job fanboys! Thanks for taking away all the qualities that people like about these characters, and all because you think that these qualities don't exist!
In my opinion, there's nothing wrong with Knuckles having a funny side. But, he has a cool side and a depth-of-character side that have been lost lately. Sonic Mania Adventures handled Knuckles perfectly. He was the funniest character in the shorts, but they let him be cool as well as he tore robots to bits and one-shotted Metal Sonic. TSR Overdrive gave him a cool moment that really suited him as he leaped from his car to save Sonic from a bomb, but ruined it a little with his over-the-top injured face afterward. I think they should have given him a dignified face to go with the thumbs up, with dirt and scuffs all over instead of goose-eggs, black eyes, and missing teeth. In deep, story-driven games like the Adventure games, Knuckles's humor should be held back, saved for only moments when it will leave a perfect impact without ruining the scene in question. Knuckles has several sides to his character that are all incredible, and he can easily adapt to any tone that a game or video uses. When those sides are executed well and used at the right times, he's the best character in the series!
I love dumb knuckles In boom People always forget that the boom counterparts are different takes on the characters. Also boom knuckles has some actually funny material to work with. Also he’s not big the cat levels of dumb.
The way the Sonic franchise is slaughtering its own characters is disgusting: - Shadow went from a product of a dangerous experiment which got many people killed to a cringy edgelord; - Amy went from an independent girl with a crush on Sonic to a psycho fangirl; - Knuckles went from a responsible guardian of the Master Emerald to a comedic relief bonehead; Really disgusting!
Fanats about Knuckles from "Sonic Boom": He's big dumb! Me: Knuckles is Cloud Cuckoolander. He's nice giant, musician, inspirer, feminist and loyal friend.
This kinda makes me wanna see what they're going to do with Knuckles in the third movie with Sonic. I always wonder how Shadow and Knuckles would talk to each other or how their fight would be like.
knuckles isn't even my favorite character but they massacred the poor dude i feel bad for all the knuckles fans they're favorite character has been massacred

i think making him clumsy, oblivious, naive and shy (around women according to the manuals) are cute character traits for him, as long as they are used to contrast his estoic, introverted and serious self, not to making him look stupid
I second this
I liked gem hunting in the adventure games so, I liked the idea of Knuckles being a treasure hunter. They mentioned him being one a couple of times in the game and said he was one in the OVA, they even gave him a cool hat, then they dropped the idea and made him into dumb muscle and comic relief. My guess is he got sidelined because Shadow became the new fan favorite.
Mysticgamer
It wasn’t just Shadow taking over as Sonic’s rival, Silver and Blaze also took over important aspects of his character like being naive and getting in over his head when wanting to do the right thing or being a stoic loner guardian learning the meaning of friendship and teamwork(nothing against Blaze, but man was she a blatant knockoff in Rush, good thing they made her more original later on) that likely made SEGA not want to use these character traits on Knuckles anymore.

(I personally like him, but I think he also suffered from bad writing.)
One instance I can think of when Knuckles got disrespected or undermined by someone would be in Aqua Road when he says "Well look at you, rookie.
What's important is to have a well thought out strategy." (I'll talk more about Operation Big Wave in a moment.)
The third instance is when Knuckles says "I don't like sitting on the bench, but there's nothing to do till Tails gets back." Then Amy responds with "Way to jinx it!
I only hope they give him the right attention in sonic movie sequel
We can hope. Let the new fans have a good first impression of Knuckles.
No, don't rush it. Sonic 2 was Tail's debut so it's fitting the sequel focus on the duo getting to know each other, I think they should wait until the third movie. Maybe a teaser with Knuckles at the end of 2. Then, we get Sonic 3 & Knuckles baby!
Zac Ziggarot I agree with you! That makes for a good story set-up.
I mean, they characterized Sonic pretty much perfectly in the movie, so hopefully they'll do the same to Tails, Knuckles, etc.

Finally someone said it.
Archie knuckles is one of the best characters across all sonic media. Very underrated and a complex character. He keeps his seriousness from the old games but he felt like an actual teenager dealing with teenage emotions all while juggling being a hero.
Cygnus Prime And you know what’s better, it’s the fact that Knuckles can use chaos.
When Ken Penders can write better than you, you know you fucked up.
Welcome back by the way.👏👍
Glad to be back
When I was a kid, my first Sonic game was Sonic Adventure 2 Battle.
@@ChillKnuxFan201 I love that part when he fools Mecha Sonic into destroying Egg Robo.
“Do I look like I need your power?”
Welp its 2022 and Knuckles is officially back to being a clever, charismatic badass.
Knuckles is indeed a great character that is done injustice.

I agree with this video 110% Knuckles deserves so much better.
And your last line in the video has me tearing up. Heck yeah, quiet kids need heroes.
Come to think of it, we only see the Master Emerald in Mania as a callback.
@@charactersin-depth3472 Exactly. The Master Emerald really only shows up as "fan-service" in games now and that's if it's lucky to show up at all. It's a shame that it's been left behind when it (like Knuckles) still has potential for the Sonic series.
@prickly pear agreed
Knuckles was once viewed as an awesome character to ending up as a joke to the fandom next to other characters like Silver. Sonic Boom does not help make Knuckles be viewed as the cool character he really is.

It's nice to have an introverted character like Knuckles and not have him seem weird or strange because of that. He is a hero!
Knuckles basically lost any purpose in the games, he was supposed to be the guardian of the Master Emerald, but since he doesn't appear to do that anymore, he lost much of his personality. I would really like if they ever give him an important role in a Sonic game again
I miss Knuckles being important as the others.
@@Whocares158 I miss the Others & Knuckles being important as Sonic
"Do I look like I need your power?" *holds back Sonic mid-spin*
Sonic Movie 2 seems to be doing good with him
Great video.
Sega did to Knuckles what Nintendo did to Luigi. Ridiculing their original personalities for "comedic" effect.
Nintendo messed up Luigi?
Umm Luigi's character is just fine. They didn't mess him up at all or use him for "comedic" effect. If anything Luigi is more developed than ever now.
I hate it.

Knuckles needs more love he's a very good character let's hope and pray that the new 2021 sonic game puts him in the right direction
The Sonic 2 movie was very faithful to his character, personally and origin, alongside Tails.
They were always teenagers

I miss that Knuckles
In Sonic X:
Just consider the fact that he's ignored and mocked by others, even by his own friends when he disagrees with their thinking.
Last line was great
"Quiet kids need heroes too"
THANK YOU! Somebody who understands the core values that make Knuckles who he is and how he had been completely and utterly butchered in all recent titles. Earned a like from me!
Thanks, Gattling.
@@charactersin-depth3472 Of course! I watched your other videos on sonic characters and I have to say they are all fantastic and extremely on point, as someone who also greatly enjoys talking about characters in an in depth manner you have my respect, keep up the great work!
@@gattlinggolduck6373 agreed
Daaaamn, so that's why people are so hyped for knuckles in sonic movie sequel. That would be awesome to see.
"Knuckles the Echidna is my all-time favorite Sonic character."
INSTANT SUB
In all seriousness tho, Knux is my fav too and I hate how he was misrepresented in Generations - Forces. Didn't mind him in Frontiers tho.
everything you've said is everything i could never put into words. you explain his character perfectly, and how they've screwed him up. it's a shame seeing such an amazing character be turned into just the butt of the joke, i hope to see more of his old personality soon
Coming back here from the future with high hopes about the new sonic movie
It's depressing watching such a badass character get turned into a literal joke. The modern sonic writers just clearly don't know how to write *any* of the cast. It's like they're all ridiculous poorly understood stereotypes of themselves.
exactly. It hurts how true your'e statement is
4:01 My reaction to what Knuckles is now
THANK YOU!!!!!!!!

Knuckles: *YOUR RUINING MY LIFE*
Knuckles (boom version): **DEAD**
I love this video. I’ve been trying to put my opinion on how knuckles is handled into words for a while and this basically was what I was looking for. Hope that Sonic frontiers gives Knuckles (if he’s in that game) a better narrative due to Ian Flynn being writer
After watching all your Sonic character developement videos i think SEGA should hire you
"You can call me knuckles, unlike Sonic I don't chuckle,I rather flex my muscles".
Knuckles will always be one of my favorites, a naive heroic protector who wises up over the years and is willing to help he friends.
He simply took his advice that Sonic might be stealing his Emerald, and he wanted to get him away from Angel Island
--Sonic Adventure - He never had close friendship with Sonic.
I forgot that Knuckles can glide and climb up cliffs
Sonic OVA has the best version of Knuckles.
The second movie this year really redeemed Knuckles, he was long due for it
Knuckles isn't comic relief, he's ruffer than the rest of them, tougher than leather. His name is knuckles, and unlike Sonic he doesn't chuckle.
"Sonic Forces was a step in the right direction."
I never thought I would hear those words
it was tho, Knuckles was taken more seriously and wasn't an idiot comic relief
Yeah, I admit that having Knuckles as Leader of the Resistance was a breath of fresh air for me.
It’s kinda sad how the movies understand knuckles better than sonic team
"His debut in S3&K established him as one of the most unique characters from the Classic Era!"
As someone who grew up in the Classic Era, it seemed to me like the common attitude towards him could be summed up with "WAAH, I DON'T LIKE STINKY RED SONIC! REEEEE!"
And honestly, it feels like this insanely negative, and unfairly bias attitude has never really gone away!
I'm sorry...I like the Boom Knuckles design
I love dumb knuckles In boom
People always forget that the boom counterparts are different takes on the characters. Also boom knuckles has some actually funny material to work with. Also he’s not big the cat levels of dumb.
Knuckles always was and always will be my favorite sonic charater
Sega: wants comic relief characters
Orbot and Cubot: allow us to introduce ourselves
I hit the like button the moment you said he was your favourite character.
The way the Sonic franchise is slaughtering its own characters is disgusting:
- Shadow went from a product of a dangerous experiment which got many people killed to a cringy edgelord;
- Amy went from an independent girl with a crush on Sonic to a psycho fangirl;
- Knuckles went from a responsible guardian of the Master Emerald to a comedic relief bonehead;
Really disgusting!
I love him soooooo much he’s so mysterious and amazing
Fanats about Knuckles from "Sonic Boom": He's big dumb!
Me: Knuckles is Cloud Cuckoolander. He's nice giant, musician, inspirer, feminist and loyal friend.
0:44 Random but he's so adorable looking over yonder the cliff like that ♡
I like to think that this Knuckles is just a replacement for the old Knuckles because the old Knuckles is on vacation.
"Quiet kids need heroes too." If I'd heard that as a kid that would've helped me through so much 😢 freaking great video my man 👏🏽👏🏽
“Sonic Forces was a step in the right direction” there’s a Line you won’t come across often
With Iizuka retconning everything? Tough luck buddy.
knuckles is like a shadow from team sonic.
"Do I look like i need your power???"
And just like that, Knuckles has been fixed!
Did you know: that in sonic heroes when he's doing his first punch, he swears and says, "SHIT" and then, "ROCK!" and then, "YUUUAGH!" i know, shocking right?
That ain't true.
It's actually SHIFT! ROCK! YEAH!
