  • In this video, I ride Honolulu's Bus System from Waikiki to Chinatown. It was my second time riding the bus system. The system is run by TheBus. I thought the bus system was efficient but could be modernized, especially with its fare payment system.

    Fare payment system was recently updated. Try the 60 if you get a chance. Nice long ride along the ocean on the north shore. Was part of the circle Island before they did away with it. Now you have to take a couple busses to circle but the 60 was and is the most beautiful with small stops along the ocean with just a sign and sometime a bench.

    I made extensive use of the bus when I went to Hawaii on vacation, also a new yorker here. It worked, I was fine with it. It got us everywhere we wanted to go. I don't recall waiting super long each time. I wasn't expecting it to be as common service as a new york bus, so my expectations were not dashed. But it was way more than I was expecting for not being in a big city. I pretty much expect everywhere that's not a giant city to have awful transit and Hawaii's was reasonable.

    Google Maps does a pretty good job of tracking The Bus so you'll know if your bus is on time or running early or late. It can also track your progress so you don't miss your stop.
    Bumpy rides are a given since potholes are common.

    Here in Seattle, we used to have that "Touch here to open the doors" system. It was discontinued for being too confusing. The secret of the system is that it's not really that touching the doors that opens them. There's an electric beam above the door that opens them. All you really need to open the doors is a slight touch of your fingertip.

    • @LJGator808
      @LJGator808 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      People here in Honolulu (especially the older crew) enjoy putting both hands on the windows and just pumping the ever loving chriminy out of the dual swing doors with zero success.
      Then they start to scream and yell while pushing and pumping with all their might like the doors need CPR.
      It can be frustrating even to just watch.

      TRUTH....that Hawaii doesn't have a public school bus system. But that's because it's All privatized! Another reason is that majority of public/private & universities are ALL w/in walking distance of nearest bus stops. UH-Manoa has one bus route that travels on the outskirts of Manoa campus & one that bisects E/W...same campus. HPU is right in the middle of downtown HNL/Chinatown
