Stick Welding with 7018 Home Improvement Project

  • Stick Welding with 7018 Home Improvement Project. This week I needed to install a metal post so we could finish up our deck railing project. The post needed to be installed into a concrete step. I could have purchased the post at our home center for nearly $100 but I decided to build it from scrap metal that I got for free. I used 3/8" plate for the base plate and schedule 40 iron pipe for the post. I welded it using 120 amps DC electrode positive (although I accidentally said DC negative in the video). I used a lot of tools for this simple build.

    For 7018 you can multiply the electrode diameter by 1000 to get a rough guide for amperage. 1/8" rod is 0.125" so you run it at 125 amps. 3/32 is 0.093 so you run it at 93 amps. 5/32 is 0.156 so you run it at 156 amps.

    There are thicker posts that don't need a wood post, they are about 3/8" thick and are designed to go over steel stanchions which are similar to what you built except they have spring steel ears on All 4 sides at the top to both center the post and keep it from sliding back up. And 4 1/4" tapcons would have held just fine, a 3/16" hole is much likelier to miss rebar. As far as the broken concrete I find that rebuilding the corner is the best long term repair, insert tapcons into the original concrete and leave them protruding to make an effective reinforcement tie in. I've beendoing this type of work for 30 years and have never had this method fail, it is a very common repair. You just have to get creative when building forms for curves, bullnoses, protrusions etc. Bagged concrete mix and vinyl concrete patch are my go to materials.

I thought it would be new welder in at first followed by mag drill then the table in at 3rd. Keep the drill press for the grandson, by the times he's 8 you'll be able to have a wee shop helper. Its going to be simple but very versatile. My intent is to make it work exactly like a drill press then easily take it in the go for portability. Great idea about the little drill lress. It will be perfect for him!

I gave mrpete22 a shout and he recommended 800rpm but the mag drill is 550 so I'll see if it makes my drill any better. No issues at 800rpms but worth having a wee play. the mag drill is one purchase I have had on my my mind for some time now, will be getting one soon, most likely the Evolution like yours.
    I have 2 Fronius welders a trans pocket 180 and a Transteel 2200 multi process. Both are fine machines, Brandon now all you need is the Transteel 2200 mig with the 15 foot mig lead and your lifetime set for welding will be complete. There is a fellow from England on youtube I think his channel is Arc OnePlus, he swears by the Fronius welders , he is a professional pipe fabricator and does fine work
    look him up if you have time. Looking to your next video.

    • @BrandonLund
      @BrandonLund  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Bruce. I appreciate you watching! I have plans to make it into a quick change drill press so it will serve double duty in the workshop. I don't have an everyday need for a mag drill but I do have a constant need for a drill press so now this will be a more functional tool for me (for about the same price or less as a good drill press) but it will serve double duty and very few drill presses will ever match the torque capabilities of this so it will work prefect. FYI, I have reached out to Evolution Tools and they have been kind to give my viewers a discount. If you purchase using my link in the description it will save you a few bucks :) hope this helps and thanks for the great comment! I Really want one of the Fronius Trans Steel welders. Their equipment is very nice!

      Great tip on the epoxy Thank you! Have you ever done something and while your doing it you know you shouldn't be, but you keep on doing it anyways? Rather than get a bit the next size up (and do it the safe way) I figured I could keep driving the drop in anchor until it seated flush...I knew better but I kept hitting it anyways because it only had to go "just a little more". I invented new swear words....probably a good thing I can edit LOL. Fortunately the mistake covered up well LOL cheers buddy!

    Can't wait for the mag drill project! Question, I went and looked up the welding calculator, and it does not provide settings for 0.30, since my "great " Lincoln MP210 does not shows 0.30 flux core settings and I have a lot of 0.30 wire. Is there a formula to convert from 0.35 to 0.30? That way I won't have to keep using 0.35 flux core. I tried to use the settings for 0.30 solid wire but is not working right. Any ideas or suggestions will be greatly appreciated!

    • @BrandonLund
      @BrandonLund  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks man. The mag drill / drill press project should be a lot of fun. It's been something I've wanted to do for a long time. As far as wire feed and settings, I've always used the chart that came with the machine but here is a ROUGH way to get you somewhat close with solid wire MIG. Setting the amperage = 1 amp for every .001 of material thickness. Selecting wire diameter 30-130 amps: .023 inch 40-145 amps: .030 inch 50-180 amps: .035 inch 75-250 amps: .045 inch. Setting voltage - turn down until the machine starts stubbing and note the setting then turn up until it starts getting sloppy and note the setting. Split the difference between the two settings as a starting point. Setting wire feed speed for .030-inch wire. Multiply by 2 inches per amp to find the wire feed speed in inches per minute. These are rough numbers but should get you close enough that you can dial it in to your liking. Enjoy!

    Yup, using pre-rusted metal means that you don’t have to worry about it rusting later. Whew! That’s a load off my mind. ;~)
    I’m surprised the drill doesn’t have a coolant tank and line. Is one optional?

    • @BrandonLund

      Thanks Mel. This model comes with a coolant tank and hoses and some other doo dads. I just didn't use it during this project. When we do the drill press / mag drill fabrication I'm going to make sure that it's included in that build. It also comes with a nice carrying case and everything fits snugly inside. I just didn't want the coolant leaking out into the nice case from the hoses. I'm weird I know. lol. Thanks for watching man!

      So was it the Israeli gov who triggered the Beirut explosion like I'm reading online? First person from there I've had the opportunity to ask since reading it.

      @@jamescairney. Although we can we do not do such acts to the innocent. The Israeli people seek peace and good for all the countries of the world. This was the negligence of the Lebanese legal system.

    I got metal in my eye. First I went to urgent care and they used the needle on the end of a syringe to get it out. They missed a few pieces and so I went to an opthalmologist and he used something that seemed like an engraver and it worked much better. Go to an opthalmologist next time much better experience.

      @Christopher Salisbury eye injuries are no joke. I almost convinced the nurse to let me take a bottle of the eye numbing drops home but then the doctor intervened by saying "we know how you construction guys are. You will go back to work and won't rest your eye and you get more debris in it without knowing" so he shut me down. I've gone to both. I usually go to the ER and then if they can't get it they send in a specialist. If it's during working hours I just go strait to the eye doc :)

    It’s a shame that the post sleeve a 48” coast 48.00 dollars and the cap and trim were 10.00 each so it took 68.00 each post Not including the 4x4 post.

    Sure hate the " safety equipment police " . Anyone whom is grinding, drilling, cuttin%welding etc... ( which just about anyone watching does ) KNOWS to wear ppe. Shouldn't have to address it to those with tatletale childish behaviors that yell gotcha

      Your right, I shouldn't have to state the obvious, but for the same reason McDonalds puts a warning "contents are hot" on their coffee cups, I have to give disclaimers in my videos. There is always someone looking for a free payday off the backs of hard working individuals.
