Planting and Growing Roses for Cut Flower Production

- We added roses to our farm this season as part of our specialty cut flower crop lineup. This is a step by step on our process, taking the roses from bare root through blooming, and the winter maintenance and how we get them ready for next season.

Briallen Rose thank you! Cutting deep and keeping a steady feeding schedule is our best bet to long stems and lots of them.

I bought 31 damasks & moss & all sorts of roses celebrating (realising after 2 yrs ).. coming back in 1 wk. from hospital in Sep.2021 having an artery behind the heart 100 % blocked fully functioning now.. i can’t wait to see the flowers this summer 24.. hard work planting them in big pots 2 in each

Ya know...i am known for my messes...and have learned the hard way to take a tarp and drag it behind me so i dont have to stoop and pic up things twice...and because bending is a problem...i took a couple of safety pins and put a strap on it..and tuck it in my pocket as i work along...saves time and my back.

Hi in norway we say that the grafting point should be at least 10cm about 4 inches? Under ground, to bury the grafting point really deep, in order for the roses to survive winther.
Hi! New sub. Thank you for this video! I am hoping to start on a rose production next spring. Is your spacing on 3' centers? That was about what it looked like. Thanks!! PS- I like how you laid the plastic down the middle to keep the weeds down between your rows of bushes... would it not be possible to put landscape fabric where The roses are as well? Or is that a bad idea?
These are planted about 3' on center, but they are a fairly small bush. Subsequent plantings are a bit further spaced. We like to have the weed barrier on the paths and up to the plants, leaving a strip of about 1-1.5' for mulching, fertilizing and water.

Hi from Future Farm:) How often are you fertilizing through the season and are you using bone and bone for that as well? Also, fav kind of mulch...looks like wood chips? Your videos are so on point. Thank you!
Thanks! We do fertilize through the summer months with emulsion, foliar fed. Wood chips are great, because they break down through the season, creating food and then we remulch...

Thanks for watching! Your price per stem will be mostly dependent on you area and market. Check the pricing from tour nearest wholesale flower market, and remember that locally grown blooms have so much to offer compared to imports!
We do grow our roses organically, yes!

is there anything you do to force a) more and b) straighter, stronger stems?
Proper pruning and fertilization are two things that we found helped immensely with our blooms as the season progressed. The first flush was definitely the shortest and weakest.

Hi there, this inspired me to grow roses! So have about 50 coming and will follow your lead. How much space do they need? Looks to be about 2-3 feet? Thanks - also is it easier to sell just one colour, compared to many colours? Thanks and greetings from the UK!
We spaced these really close, but usually aim for 3-4 feet. We find that in order to have enough to sell at any given time we need to have a good amount of each color, muted, blush and antique shades are selling best right now

These were ordered from Weeks Roses, but we also order from Star, Heirloom and a few more local nurseries.

Year round would require them to be in greenhouse and heated in the cold months

Thank you for watching! Start with your soil. Make sure you have well drained, fertile soil. Plant the rose in the early spring or fall for best establishment. Keep it evenly watered throughout the warm weather. We also fertilizer throughout the growing season to keep our plants healthy. Hope that helps, happy growing!

hey do you make decent money doing this i was gonna grow box woods roses annuals anything really for spring plants for raised beds because we have a lowes which is always out and a another place but there going down hill so i really want to take over the competition
We're growing for cut flowers, it's going to depend a lot on what the demand and saturation of your market is, and if there are established wholesale needs. Most of our flowers are sold through wholesale channels, to designers, florists and grocery stores.
I bought a small flowerpot with roses. There were a lot of buds, but there are only a few left. I'm keeping it by the sun's window, so I don't want it to wither and die.

We get ours Direct from David Austin, Weeks and Star roses. (ask of the wholesale price list not the retail lists) They all have minimums of 100, but you can mix and match in increments of 5. I am late to this party, but wait-- so roses need blood and bone to grow?
We use the bone and blood meal to ensure that the roses are getting a good dose of nitrogen and phosphorous to get started. A good organic fertilizer would also be suitable 😁 thanks for watching!

There are definitely other options, but I have not researched them enough to be able to offer sound advice

We push our roses to produce a lot of blooms for us, so we want to give them extra love and nutrients to help them be as strong and prolific as possible. Good soil is a great start, sounds like you have good stuff!

No amount of tillage lasts more than a month tops. Grow like nature does with living carpets of mulch like clovers or vetches or grasses. Seriously you’ll notice that there’s very little detriment to the plants all the while no need for tillage and much less need for fertilizer. Weeds should be used not banned from a garden.
