Despite being Midwest and also a huge fan of silly side game modes in Melee, I've actually never played Dorfball before. Appreciate you continually chronicling Midwest Melee culture!
you think it's all fun and games until you find out that half of the ganondorf scene is filled with racist players with no regards for respect in the community.
Some of the most hype crowds I've ever been a part of were not watching regular bracket matches but rather with Dorfball. Try and get your local scene to run it as a side event so you can experience it :) It's fast paced full of reversals and reverse hits which leads to dozens of KOs in minutes. It can be enjoyed at any skill level and doesn't need any mods **Ganon taunts** to be played!
It pains me to see the hidden lore of Legalizing Jungle Japes smothered by the dorfball commitee. Wake up Sheeple! Learn the true history they don't want you to find out. FREEDOM FOR JAPES! Great video btw
I remember playing Dorfball at locals in West Michigan in 2017-18, never thought I'd see it years later at TBH with the same people from those locals like Anasazi, Woley and Nyte.
We used to play something like this at my dorm in college except it was Bowser instead of Ganon and you could play any character. Puff rest was broken, and fox could steal kills with his laser. Was a ton of fun!
We created a game about 17 years ago where you have 2 (or even 3) Kirby players and one Captain Falcon NPC. At the beginning of the game Kirbies compete to swallow the Captain Falcon in order to get the hat and the Falcon Punch ability. Only one Kirby is allowed to have the hat at a time, and that Kirby tries to get kills on the other Kirby (or Kirbies) with a Falcon Punch. Only kills with the Kirby Punch count. Killing the Captain Falcon doesn't count either. You can swallow the Kirby with the hat to steal the hat, but once a Kirby has the hat you can't swallow the Captain Falcon again until the falcon Kirby dies or the hat is lost.
It's fun commentary! That was some of the more mysterious dorfball footage I found. Anasazi said the mode might have ended up in PM because of dirtboy, a Michgan PM goat, but I wasn't sure. @@GrissoAndShade
@@wusstunes Dirtboy was definitely one of those influences for it! Tbh, I feel Dorfball works a bit better in PM/P+ because of the larger stage variety it provides.
oh, cool. i played a lot of “smash-ketball” or whatever people called it back in brawl’s release, with it’s custom maps. cute that melee did something like that.
Never even knew that Dorfball was a thing. This is perhaps one of the most creative things in smash melee I've seen. It allows for player expressions with fancy combos and what have you. I think this should be right there with those combo displays with smash64
blackface...? if we're talking about ganondorf, i guess i can understand seeing his facial features and grey/green skin as a caricature but i don't think that makes it black*face*, he's just a demon king as for the midwest: i cannot pretend to be knowledgable on this matter
I liked volleyball but it was hard lol! Loved watching good players make it work but it was way too much to keep track of for me to be able to do anything in it.
Just wanted to let you know this video made me try it out, having not touched melee for years, and introduce it to my friend who's one of the better players in my country - we both had a blast!
This actually sounds like a cool idea. I’m always looking for other game modes to mess around with. I think it helps a lot when one person in a friend group is way better in a game than the others, because then it isn’t lopsided.
I was just looking for ideas side-events for my next tourney. This is perfect. From now on Smash BXL in Belgium will have DORFBALL on the menu! Does anyone have a link to that reddit post with other ideas for side-events?
I love game modes like this! I remember playing cactuar smash pancake with the best player in my region at one of my first local. Stuff like this is so good for 0-2ers to get into the scene.
@@wusstunes OH I just realized I got the name wrong its cactuar stamina pancake lol. Yeah its stamina mode and then there a bunch of rules. We used to play it pretty often in WI back in 2014-15. Honestly dont remember how to actually play its been years. For some reason I think we played on the mushroom kingdom stage that has birdo but I could be mistaken. Anyways there must be a smashboards thread on it somewhere.
Actually yeah! In some of the interviews one of the things I thought was neat is that Dorfball with Team Attack Off is basically the only non contact sport version of Melee.
It’s me! SuperDry!! I played west Michigan melee for years! I had no idea Dorfball was a Michigan thing 😂😂😂 So cool to see you guys again❤ Hashslinging smasher 😂 Anasazi! God y’all are legends
i love all of these goffy fun side modes/events tournaments do from time to time sometimes they surpass the actual brackets in terms of fun to watch imo lol
2v2 dorfball is possible in the newer games. HDR (an ultimate mod that plays similar to melee) has so far been incredibly fun to play and I highly recommend it.
a gamemode we played is poketrainer battles. both pick ness and only pokeballs spawn with high spawnrates. u divide any stage by 2 to give each player a half. you can only use balls that are on your side or exactly on the object/ landmark that is the border betweeen your halfs. venom is the best map in my experience. why ness? coz you can hit balls with the baseball bat giving it another layer but it takes skill to pull of. variations like adding food or other specific items are possible to mix it up. just dont add to much or the gamemode suddenly is throw sh*t at each other
I really wanna run this at my next local, but it seems really hard to keep score. Is it usually better to have the players keep track, or should I be in the back tallying up the points?
Really happy I could help out, and thanks so much for the awesome video!!
Play Dorfball!
pretty shameful video. ganondorf players are blatantly racist and deserve no attention in the smash community. thought we were better than this.
I just like that melee has two ball-shaped characters and they chose to use kick the shit out of the embodiment of evil instead
We Midwesterners love balls and hate evil, I don't know what to tell ya

Gotta find a way somehow lol
Upon finding out some people were enjoying their game, Nintendo shipped Miyamoto out personally to hand these people their cease and desist.

notice how there isn't any non-white people. it's a wonder why ganondorf players are so racist.
Kind of insane. Never expected to see GV getting a shout-out, haha.
Shoutout to woley for the prestigious second place at bighouse in a side event maybe next year!

holy shit ... why is the midwest the most INSANE region of super smash bros by far
this video is beautiful

they got nothing better to do, culture finds a way
midwest also has the most racists. not a surprise to see sports for one of the most infamous blackface characters in video gaming.

that dept of energy rulemaking clip was a true master's touch
they were worthless so i had to ask jeeves, and he wasnt very helpful either! e

Reminds me of the arcade game Deathball, looks like a 10/10 experience.
we ran this at a London weekly once, but we used Kirby because he's ball shaped. Dorf seems better because he's not so light, loool

Usually the players just keep count themselves, though I've seen some stream setups where they keep a running count on the stream for both players.
