There’s an article, “ Enganging in the misconception on Rhetoric” That should help u copy and paste answers to whatever english assignment you were forced to watch this video on
So what I’m getting from this video is that rhetoric is something that we all use everyday but don’t really think about in a formal structure. We usually think of rhetoric as “sweet talk” (hence why most people think it’s “for liars”) or something we see in debates, but it’s actually more common than we think, since it’s our way of reasoning our decisions. Whether it’s something like deciding which brand of sauce to buy (“I’m getting this sauce because it’s healthy, cheap, and has the right amount I need”) or deciding when the best time to schedule a hangout with your friends (“This time is good because it fits within our schedule”), it’s an essential skill that we all need in order to think for ourselves and make our own choices on how to live our lives. Feel free to correct me if I misinterpreted it or add on to what I thought.
Mathematics is the most conservative of all the arts. Putting this out there before I continue. Rhetoric isn's about learning a fact or facts. It's about exercising your ability to observe and to then have the ability to put into words your thoughts. The other thing I would like to mention is the three core subjects of trivium taught in medivial universities. The order went grammar, logic, and rhetoric. Grammer is the most important subject a child can to master and it's important to let them know that facts ,which may or may not prove useful to them, shouldnt be important. The power to exercise his or her observation is.
Rhetoric is the art of communication. All communication is persuasion - mostly looked at through grammar and logic - from painting, math, philosophy, science, all knowledge. In other words, the way a subject is communicated is rhetoric. In layman's terms, it is like couching an answer, rhetoric is the couching of the answer.
Rhetoric in my opinion is the art of communication. I think it mostly used for you or someone trying to get someone else believe you or go with how you feel about something. Anywhere you go say the store or hearing someone talk it just always is showing rhetoric. Seeing a bill board or stuff in the store it is all just trying to draw in your attention or persuade you which is what rhetoric is.
Rhetoric: If even unscrewing the pommel of your sword and throwing it at your opponent won't end him rightly, using words and rational arguments almost surely will.
The fact that the authors of this video chose to make Kate - the one who did not do her research - white is a rhetorical choice. If they had assigned "irresponsible" to the black student, it might come off as racist. This was, I suspect, not consciously chosen.
Actually, Jeff, it was a conscious decision. The grad student *deliberately* chose to include a person of color AND to show that person in a positive light. They made that decision for the reasons you articulated.
@@TharonHoward Agreed. Choosing to deliberately represent minorities in positive light is part of how we equalize representation, until it becomes second nature and no one has to stop and think about it anymore. That's basically how we deal with racism, sexism, ableism, and all forms of systemic bigotry - we make policies, rules and laws that require people to stop and consider bias in their choices, until enough time passes that we're not defaulting to the systemic biases anymore. It's not fast or easy, and it can get a lot of backlash, but it is both effective and necessary. This is similar to interviews with game designers over the last decade, where they've talked about examining game characters who might've been defaulted to male, white, able-bodied, cis-het, etc. and examining whether that's actually necessary in the story, or something they've just done out of habit. If it's the latter, then they alter those characters to be more diverse and inclusive. Eventually they won't need to make it such a conscious thought process, because writing more diverse characters will satisfy them creatively and mean more players will feel represented by their work, so they'll do that by default instead. But if it's not their nature now, to be inclusive, then actively working at it is the responsible thing to do.
I'm one of the people who has used "rhetoric" in a pejorative sense. So what's a good substitute word for "mere rhetoric" or "style without substance"?
Can't say I found this video very persuasive. "The age-old question «What is rhetoric?»"? I've never had that question, nor seen it posed by anyone outside this video.
Being age-old doesn't mean that it is common. It is an old question for people who have tried to think about language and speech. Most people don't bother. Most people are also not terribly good at thinking about things they take for granted (like persuasion and rhetoric).
The video lost a lot of credibility in the first minute when after stating Dr. Howard was in San Fransico waiting for cab, they highlight that with a picture of a line of cabs in New York City. Otherwise, a pretty good primer on rhetoric.
The great irony of this presentation is that the video itself is rhetorically ineffective. This is a terrible, high school level production from the graduate communications department of a major university. From the music to the graphics to the (sorry) fairly inarticulate speakers, the entire thing falls short on any reasonable assessment of effective ethos, pathos, logos and general appeal that one could imagine.
Everyone here is forced to watch it by their teachers, I just know it.
I’m dying it’s the middle of the night and I have a quiz on this in English- which I’m already failing if I may add
watched this cause my teacher made me :)
English teachers am i right lol

@@janeapplebee i think ur confused about what a mechanical engineer actually is. please do some googling
@@ProjectBubby Huh, you have made an interesting rhetorical choice.
LMAO SAME

I guess, but I find it extremely difficult to change someones opinion through words. People are stuck in their ignorant little ways.
I've got to admit that the rhetoric in this video is hard to argue with.
Mr.Swindells 6th Period
Excellent -- wish this could get "out there" for everyone to see
I understand rhetoric the more I read about it. It is often misunderstood as different forms. especially politics.

Often the kind of rhetoric you describe is referred to as "mere rhetoric"...

manipulation is the word you're looking for
Speechify, platitudinize
Sophistry.
I am looking at the Rhetorical triangle, and noticing the structure with communicator (ethos) at the top. Is this a hierarchy? Or coincidence?
Coincidence. The students who created it chose to do it that way, but usually, the triangle is inverted.
