- Another heavy hitter opens the show this week as it's time to see how well Mike Tyson's Punch-Out!! holds up. Beforehand I have to say I wasn't expecting it to hold up especially well... but let's find out, OK?
00:00:00 - Intro
00:09:49 - Mike Tyson's Punch-Out!!
01:00:23 - Jordan vs. Bird: One-on-One
01:20:40 - Whomp 'Em
01:43:48 - Silver Surfer
02:13:30 - Conquest of the Crystal Palace - เกม
Mike Tyson’s Punch-Out!! was the first video game that I ever obsessed about. It was such an obsession that after I lost my first tooth, I dreamt that night that Mike Tyson was the tooth fairy. He left me a Canadian one-dollar bill in exchange for my tooth.
The Disturbed vocals go with the training music way better than I would have ever imagined.
I didn't think the music in Punch-Out!! could be improved, but boy was ooh-wah-ah-ah-i wrong.
Fun fact: Conquest of the Crystal Palace was the first game Yasumi Matsuno worked on before going on to make Ogre Battle, Tactics Ogre, and Final Fantasy Tactics.
I love the visual of Jeff lying in bed awake next to his wife, mother of his children, and thinking of Mike Tyson's Punch Out.
Mike Tyson's Punch Out is such a great game. The colorful art, the big expressive sprites, the way that expressiveness ties into gameplay via attack tells, the music and sound design and the way they also complement the gameplay and add to the tension, and the simple yet addictive boxing mechanics they've built. It's a very cohesive, holistic approach to game design in an era where it seemed like everyone else was still trying to figure it out.
Punchout and it's two sequels were and still are unique. On the NES / SNES There are tons of side scrollers, plenty of action adventures, and even the odd RPG but punchout was something we only got once per generation if we were lucky. Thinking back, it could have been a great series on the Game Boy too.
Very well said.
Hot take: Soda Popinski is funnier and more charming than Vodka Drunkinski.
Watching people play Silver Surfer will never not be funny to me. That game is solely designed to piss you off
So, as this list accumulates, I'm seeing a lot of games that I completely forgot about but played once or twice at our cousin's house back in the day. They always had these games we'd never heard of, were usually REALLY hard and then never saw again, even at the most well trafficked of rental stores.
They had Simon's Quest, which was pretty well known, but then it was Where's Waldo, Galaxy 5000, Cobra Triangle, Legacy of the Wizard, T&C Wood and Water, etc.
Every time we played video games at their place, we would just get stuck in a game in a way that felt like we were playing the game wrong or something. We weren't dying, just didn't know where to go (with the exception of Where's Waldo of course) and I resented all of them to this day.
I've come around to Simon's Quest (still bad but I had fun when a guide was available) and it makes sense that Cobra Triangle is fun if one can wrap their head around an isometric control scheme (which I couldn't as a kid) but during the playthrough of Triangle, I legit had Vietnam-like flashbacks of being back in that basement, completely helpless to save any of my floating survivors from being dragged off by enemy boats.
Whomp 'Em seems to have a rather bizarre history. The first Saiyuki World game was apparently a port of Wonder Boy in Monster Land that was themed after Journey to the West for its NES release, then Whomp 'Em was a sequel to that, that they then ripped all the Journey to the West out of and replaced it with an indigenous theme for the US. Super weird.
JEFF, Think of that jump attack in Crystal Palace like it's a DIVE KICK!
I've been playing through NES games for the past few years and I was pleasantly surprised by Conquest of the Crystal Palace. I had never played it before, but I thought it was pretty darn good.
Not that this was on the NES, but I had that experience a couple years ago where I played Breath of Fire for the first time and was way more immersed that I expected
"Mr. Dream is somewhere planning a podcast with the former Val Venis" is one of the most grim portraits of a broken sports star I can imagine.
Love this steady stream of vids. Thank you!
I suggested 'Conquest of the Crystal Palace' and guess I should have added the pro-tip of "use the dog". Jeff was getting it by the end, and discovered the money loop way faster than I did, but in the end it placed about where I thought it would. A flawed game, but one I have fond memories beating as a kid.
Using my own scientific formula, it's BETTER than Dynowarz: Destruction of Spondylus, but it's no Shadow of the Ninja.
Thanks for introducing me to Whomp-Em, it looks great honestly, I'm curious to check out that Japanese Journey to the west version, or other games in that series
RE: Pictionary and Silver Surfer: Tim Follin's soundtracks almost never got paired with games worthy of them (at least until he had the opportunity to make his own game, the inestimable Contradiction: Spot the Liar!)
Little Mac pursed his lips in anticipation as Doc closed in for a tender embrace. "I'm hurting, Doc" he said, "I need you." Doc closed in and whispered sweetly into Mac's ear "Join The Nintendo Fun Club."
Love me some pasta
Punchout is top 5 in my opinion. As a kid I managed to beat macho man and his spin punch ONCE and then Tyson absolutly destroyed me. Punchout is one of two NES games with which I have a score to settle. The other being Castlevania in which I never could beat the reaper.
Easy top 5 NES game. I can't believe he said it had low replayability.
I knew so many people that came back to the game throughout the years. Including me lol
I think his own experiences and opinions got into his science a bit on that one (and lets be frank, a few of them lol)
Kim from Conquest of the Crystal Palace is a star. A business owner, a journalist, an educator. Should've got her own game.
Despite the rippin music, I think Silver Surfer was my first quick run back to the video store to use the classic "my mom rented the wrong game" line.
I know this series is all about NES, but its nice to hear someone acknowledge Super Punch-Out as a fantastic game. I (personally) feel like it sorta flies under the radar a little bit. In fact, I honestly feel like every Punch-Out has been good to great…which is why Nintendo’s near-pariah like treatment of it like some of their other series is always a bummer.
I love super punch out. Last time I played was on a PC emulator and I was bummed when I got to mad clown but the emulator would freeze when he started throwing his balls. That's what I get for pirating software I suppose (but I have a switch online + expansion account so I would argue it was fair use)
@@themidcentrist That would definitely be detrimental to the experience lol
I cant believe he put street fighter 2010 so low its actually a fun game, also challenging
By the end of this series Jeff needs some Spondylous merch
I would drink a can of Dynowars Destruction of Spondyloos…. I would not drink a can of Toobin’. I am Commander Shepard, and I approve this message.
Mentally filled in the Disturbed drops during the Jordan vs. Bird music
SPONDEELOOS
The Conquest of the Crystal Palace music reminded me of something took me forever to think of it. It's Naacho Naacho from RRR
17:46 I think this was the best implementation of the "Down with the Sickness" scream Jeff's ever done. To mix my metal bands of the era, I think he really rocked it.
I can't believe Jeff named Shoot 'Em Up Construction Kit as something that looks shitty, though. Why you gotta do SUECK like that, man? Legendary piece of software. (You're right, though, the majority of things people made with it looked like hot garbo.)
Jeff doing the lord's work.
Thought I spaced out and missed you play an entire game during the rate the drink segment
1:31:30 I feel like we just discovered the origins of Downwell.
Whoa, I must have completely blocked out Conquest of The Crystal Palace. I totally had that game when I was a kid. The Kim shop was a real nostalgia bomb.
for what it's worth I've always thought Great Tiger's gem was a little hard to tell when it's actually flashing. I gotta really be looking at it and i'm pretty sure i'm not colorblind
That silver surfer title music. I want to learn the metal version of this on guitar.
Still the best Jeff of all known Jeffs.
I was waiting for Jeff to notice that Whomp 'Em was basically native American Mega Man lol. It was decent game, in my opinion... at least in concept. The controls always felt less than impressive to me.
EDIT: The soundtrack to Conquest of the Crystal Palace had a weirdly Blaster Master vibe to it, which I love
Probably my #1. Peak NES memories. And now I will hit play and comment again in 3 hours.
I was incorrect.....I forgot science and let childhood memories run wild. Fair placement as always.
Bike music= best music
wonder if whomp em was an influence on hollow knight.... the magic forest section..... the bouncy downward attack jump....
that jordan vs bird 3 pt competition lmao
My next user name is going to be Bald Bull's lips.
Silver Surfer is perfectly in the category of games that I would see ads for in comic books. They'd have some screenshots implying deeper and more varied gameplay than the game could really deliver, and a big splashy illustration. I rented many of these games only to find out they were trash.
One thing that helps lag tremendously in emulators is either turning vsync off or having variable refresh (gsync/freesync) on in a >60hz mode. If this is part of your setup you're already doing a lot. Bluetooth controllers can have a lot of lag and inconsistent lag too. 2.4ghz or wired is recommended.
'Run ahead' is the only thing that noticeably helps my set up. Can even eliminate input delay intended by the developers
Wasn't Goonies the 4th ranked game when he played it? When did it drop to 5th? I remember him talking about Contra in that episode
Punch-out is the example I give to anyone who bought a Mister. Game just feels impossible on emulator, tho Retroarch's run ahead mode is pretty great these days.
Yes I Hear You Don Flamenco
2:18:07 - Hey, it's the GoNintendo podcast news segment music!
1:05:40 Jeff: Ya Jordan, y'know not, not a 3 point shooter. Not the way Larry Bird was known for, right?
Jeff Immediately After: Shoots a contested 3 pointer as Jordan and misses 🤣
I did not come into this video thinking Down with the Sickness x Punch-Out!! was collab I needed, but I guess things change
~~Bald Bull's lips~~
I'm with you on Mike Tyson's Punch-Out!!. It's a good game, but one I rarely go back to. Not the biggest fan of it, but I can see why people like it. Tyson is a PITA, but doable with enough tries. It's definitely better than Silver Surfer; a decent SHMUP with one of the worst player hitboxes ever. No way that game is better than Dig Dig II. C'mon!
Whomp 'Em has "we have Mega Man 2 at home" vibes to it, but Conquest of the Crystal Palace seems neat. I might have to look at that one more.
Finally, Jordan vs. Bird is a shallow piece of crap of a sports game, but I have nostalgia for it since I had the cart back in the Ye Olde Days. The music is BY FAR the best part of that game. All hail David Wise! I don't think one would raise too many eyebrows by saying that Double Dribble is definitely a better playing game. And yes, the "NBA Playoffs" games that were the precursor to NBA Live were great too. I had Bulls vs Lakers in my Genesis collection back in the day and enjoyed it.
Was wondering when Whomp’ Em would show up. I learned about it from you on an old GB video. It’s a port of a Japanese game right?
Yes
If Whomp Em had a better theme (like the original Sun Wukong's Journey to The West theme) and a Soundtrack like Journey to Sillius, the game would have an actually very competent package
Least Jordan vs Bird has a banging soundtrack.
Perhaps find a PC VGA (CRT) monitor that you can plug into your PC as a second or third monitor? As a solution for screen latency.. And get a VGA adaptor if required. maybe you could find one at a goodwill or something, still?
Questionable subject matter and title aside, I always thought of Whomp Em as a bit of hidden gem. The jumping feels good and I can dance to it.
It was the Mega Man-style stage select and weapon collection that sold me on it. I haven't played it in a very long time, though, so I don't remember if it feels good to play.
also colorblind, also hard to see that gem, i gotta be staring directly at it.
The visual language of video game tropes in Silver Surfer is outrageous. "Little twinkle" is a cue to inspect a pixel or else have to make a precision shot on that tiny spot, seeing it twinkle in the background with zero effect on gameplay in those levels was aggravating. I constantly want to collect things that aren't there.
Tim Follin doing his thing.
Is Silver Surfer with an Option considered comic book canon?
Nintendo proud to tell you thata boxing coach with a great stroke game will help you succeed.
Renowned pigeon fancier Michael Jackson Tyson.
Mike Tyson's Punch-Out and non Mike Tyson's Punch-Out are two separate games so will the second get a ranking as well?
Play have you tried 3D energy drinks yet? They still are my favorite. 200 mg of caffeine per can.
Press F to surf
Based solely on game magazine coverage, Conquest of the Crystal Palace was always an interesting one. Nice graphics, a bit of personality and a good set of options for the player. Too bad the core gameplay itself wasn't fully there yet.
Hey Bald Bull.... what dat mouf do?
is an SNES ranked list on the horizon?
My dude he has about 600 nes games to go.
lol, lmao even
distant* horizon @@steve43ful
Silver Surfer was the hardest game I've ever played. I hated this game as a kid.
QNN sadly had to rebrand with all the Qanon stuff in the last few years
It's really dumb, but seeing that Don Famenco is 23, depressed me... lol
The top 10 and bottom 10 games will have less mobility than middle-ranked games over the life of this series. It's a
I'm going to be so disappointed when Dragon Fighter comes up and Jeff ends up hating it.
That was me with Conquest of the Crystal Palace. But it's done now. The healing can begin. For me at least.
YTMND ruined the punch out bike song for me
The 50 cent remix with the line from "hate it or love it" with the stole my bike line dubbed in is GOAT
You definitely should have had Dan Ryckert as a guest, for Mike Tyson's Punch-Out.
I find this game to be too violent.
It's a bit surreal seeing Jeff play games I first saw from old AVGN videos a decade plus ago.
Jeff was playing those games when they released, and working on it too. AVGN is the OG youtube program, but Jeff is the OG videogame journalist
Trust Jeff to have a weird view of the universally loved Punch Out and attempt to claim the version no one has played is the actual great game. Arcade Punch Out is sloppy and weird, the nes game is the perfected refined version, not a compromise.
This series has to be important for historical and game preservation purposes, no?
I'd say so!
Low latency LED monitors are readily available now and not that expensive.
They really downgraded Black Myth Wukong
It's a good game but to call it top 10 is a bit much.
