@@Minecraftian2345432 “living off the land” was an order to Germans to plunder Russian villages. I don’t think they were threatened by death but just being hungry.
In the end, it all comes down to a matter of personal character. My father knew a man who was a corporal in the Canadian Army. He was bringing three German prisoners to a POW station when a lieutenant drove up in a jeep, told him to shoot the prisoners and get back to the front. The corporal refused. The lieutenant told him to shoot them or he would have the corporal court-martialed for disobeying orders. The corporal held his rifle out and told the officer, "If you want them dead, you kill them." The officer drove away, the corporal finished escorting the prisoners, and returned to his unit. He was never even spoken to about it. In the heat of combat, mistakes happen. I do not presume to condemn men who are frightened for their lives when they do things to insure their own survival even when the light of hindsight shows it was probably not a good choice. Under that kind of strain, people don't always think clearly and even if they are, they can't see the future. But this was not done in combat. This was a deliberate murder of unarmed men. This is the difference between war and murder. The sin of war will be visited on the heads of those who start war, the sin of murder on the hands of those who commit murder. Soldiers are not responsible for the deaths they cause in combat but they are for any deaths they cause out of it. And that holds true for all armies and all nations; no exceptions.

Uhhh ... how did you not know? Patton wanted to invade Russia and China right after WW2. He asked the President if he could and he was denied. That's about as bloodthirsty as it gets.

My great grandpa was in Sgt West's squad. He didn't talk about the massacre until right before his death. He was captured by the Italians right after the massacre and given to the germans who sent him to stalag 19. He said he never forgot how he had been taught how evil the Germans were when in fact he said that they treated the American POWs with nothing but respect. He lived with the guilt of the massacre his whole life and never really got over it.
Thanks for sharing your story. I'm Italian and my grandfather fought in WW2, after the capitulation in 1943 he was captured by the germans. He wasn't as lucky as your great grandfather though. He was sent to Buchenwald, a concentration camp. He managed to escape, but he suffered severe PTSD: he was spooked by barking dogs, couldn't hear germans speaking... He kept serving his country after the war too (he was a Carabiniere in Sicily and fought against the Mafia and bandits) he died of Gangrene before I could've known him, as he refused any cure.
@Dazed Confused thats not how the guineva conventipn works tho. According to your theory useing biological and chemical weapons to decimate the civilian population would be the most humane way to fight a war.
Something conveniently left out of this video is the fact that the snipers were intentionally targeting wounded soldiers and the medics attending them.
Another thing conveniently left out was that the Japanese never signed the agreement to take prisoners. The ones they did take they were cruel to. Not really a fair situation where we have to be kind to them but they don’t to us. Pinko college professors who hate America will always leave that out. They always gotta make America look like the worst when it’s not even remotely close. The Germans also literally ran over to us and surrendered as opposed to the Soviets because we gave them 3 meals a day. The Japanese butchered millions upon millions of Chinese.
It's a classic sniper tactic. The Idea is to intentionally wound and not kill the first guy. Then as people gather to help you pick them off. This is why in the us military youre trained to secure the area before helping wounded.
The allies had concentration camps in Germany as well. They were called "Rheinwiesenlager". In these labor camps the surrendering German soldiers were either starved to death, shot or died of exhaustion. 1.9 Million soldiers were imprisoned in those camps. The Wikipedia article says it was only a few thousand deaths in total, while in reality it was more than 200,000. I was able to talk to a local, who survived. He said they were tortured. Furthermore they was an incident were a soldiers wife was coming to the camp to bring food to her husband - She was then raped and murdered. In general there have been lots of rapes after the defeat of Germany. Most of them were done by the red army, but also by the US and French army. Though, my grandma said that the US soldiers, especially the black ones have been nice. When they drove by, they gave chocolate to the kids.
You forgot an important fact. One of the german killed after surrender was Ludwig "Luz" Long, the long Jumper silvermedalist that in 1936 Olympic games tried to overcome Jesse Owens
According to some research, he was killed on 14 July 1943, the day of the massacre. It says he was killed in Acate, not far from the Biscari site... nothing directly ties him to the massacre, but evidence does seem to make it a possibility. More details needed...

I once worked at a retirement home. I distinctly remember an old US Army Veteran, who was on his deathbed, admitting that his unit, hunted down Waffen SS troops who were trying to hide among the population at the end of the war and murdering them instead of capturing them. I don't remember his exact words, but he explained in vivid detail that he personally took part in the murder of an SS soldier somewhere in Belgium near the German border in early 1945. The German Armies in Belgium were collapsing and German soldiers were deserting or surrendering by the thousands. He said the locals pointed out that a German soldier was hiding in an abandoned farmhouse near their village. They knocked on the door and the man that they were looking for opened it. They asked him some questions and he admitted that he was an SS soldier. Without another word, he was immediately shot in the doorway multiple times, the upper half of his body landed inside the house with his feet laying outside. He was left to die. Apparently his actions haunted him so much that he kept it a secret for 65 years and wanted to clear his conscience before he passed away. It's messed up, man.

He spoke also of the difficulties of peace in the aftermath of war. He said things I have never heard or read elsewhere. One thong he came back to was the dilemma of surrender and capture. He said it would be very hard to resist the urge to shoot a surrendered man who moments earlier had killed your friends and had been trying to kill you. It seemed a reasonable point. I didn't push for details, although I suspect he did resist. He also spoke of fear of capture, citing the same reason. "We knew we might.... We worried that they might, too". Not true. There are tons of warcrimes that don't involve following orders (e.g. rape, looting, etc. ).

The Wikipedia article says it was only a few thousand deaths in total, while in reality it was more than 200,000. I was able to talk to a local, who survived. He said they were tortured. Furthermore they was an incident were a soldiers wife was coming to the camp to bring food to her husband -
She was then raped and murdered.
In general there have been lots of rapes after the defeat of Germany. Most of them were done by the red army, but also by the US and French army.
Though, my grandma said that the US soldiers, especially the black ones have been nice. When they drove by, they gave chocolate to the kids.

2019- Fail height and weight= dishonorable discharge.
1944- Kill 36 unarmed prisoners= demotion and an honorable discharge.
But did he fail height and weight tho?
Hahahaha
He got VA disability, too!
Being overweight during boot camp resulting in being sent home is not a dishonorable discharge, it is a general discharge.
Blows up an entire city of civilians = congratulations and medal
It's impressive to see how consistently the animation quality of this channel just continues to improve, well done guys
While i enjoy the cartoon esk nature of the animations and characters i do love seeing better detailed items, weapons and the like. This channel is by far my favorite and most watched!
what i have learned about War crimes, its only illegal if its the enemy doing it
Have you heard of Vietnam?
@@bigbubba3383 yes, and also the Gulf war
Actually it was still illegal, and the soldiers who did performed these crimes often got executed by firing squad. It's a shame you were born such a brain dead fool, incapable of seeing the truth.
The phrase “war crime” makes no sense to me lol
@Griffyn Makene lol you're extremely biased and brainwashed. Pretty clear you haven't taken more than a cursory glance at ww2 either. Winners write the history books, and you've just eaten up the propaganda. Also it absoulutely wouldn't be "information overload " children could comprehend the truth of historical events instead of what makes the allies look better and the axis look like bumbling pure evil movie villains. Wouldn't require more time in class, there are plenty of significant events that aren't flat out lies and don't put allies in a good light, could easily be worked into the curriculum to give a more truthful, balanced account of the war instead of purely biased, sometimes untruthful accounts. You are literally saying having a balanced, truthful account that humanizes and shows the atrocities of both sides, instead of the biased propaganda taught in history classes now is untenable for the children. Shows where your mind is at, gotta keep that cycle going eh?
"It's not a War Crime if you win."
Patten Problably.
"The enemy snipers were especially effective from concealed positions" - yeah, well, that's what makes them snipers.
The fun part is that there were no snipers
So youre saying when a sniper of rank goes out of his position, hes "not" considered a sniper!?
@@nathanb.8114 Isn't the definition of a sniper that they are a concealed shooter?
@@pauliejay4161 no, a sniper is a soldier that specializes in long range engagement.

I am Russian, and I am sure incidents like that happened everywhere on Eastern Front, like 100%. Fact is, they were probably not even documented
80% or german army died in Russia 20% other fronts wow.......... soviet union was winner not Allies
@@lolofblitz6468 "Soviets were winner not allies" you sure forgot the fact it was Japan and Germany. Germany being crushed from both sides was what caused it's fall. Just Germany vs Soviets? A bloody war which wouldn't have gone the way you think
Also Japan only surrendered due to US efforts mainly. Without the Nuke and essentially sacrifice of the civilians, well, Japan would have stretched it even longer

I feel like 90% of the history I learned in high school was about politics, Native Americans, and the constitution. Which sucks considering history was one of the few classes I enjoyed in school, I gave my best speech in public speaking on WW2. Football was a far higher priority for my school, that and the one time a rock band visited the school and played for the football team, they spent like 10 grand on a plaque to 'Memorialize it...
General Patton should’ve also been held responsible, in his speech, he ordered the men to ignore the Geneva convention
It wasn't a good way to go about it, but it is the average soldiers job to uphold the Geneva convention. You are expected to have good enough morals to say no.
Nathan Whaley
I don’t think the 18 year old kids that were drafted, had the Geneva convention as their main focus when being shipped out to war. lol
Harrison Rawlinson disagree
Kevin C I think that ‘don’t kill prisoners’ was pretty common knowledge
Harrison Rawlinson the Also didn’t care about the Geneva conventions I think that they deserved it
I never knew my grandfather, but he served in all of the major theaters in Europe under Patton. According to my father, he said that during the Battle of the Bulge, when his unit found evidence of the Germans marching barefooted POWs into the snow to execute them, they only took soldiers prisoner; officers were executed on sight.
Patton: Show no mercy.
US Soldiers: Sir, Yes, sir!
**US Soldiers commit war crimes**
Patton: When I said show no mercy, I didn’t mean it literally!
Sir,Yes Sir? You're not in the Navy lmao.

War makes a hypocrite out of everyone.
Misanthropic Soldier there are many laws to war pretty sure.. chemical gas, nukes are pretty commonly big no no’s and if you do it prepare to get destroyed with prejudice
when men are literally killing each other as pure savages and something like this happens, then everyone is supposed to be "surprised and shocked". This is war!
Men do can do horrible things to each other in time of war.
War is pretty much an act hypocrisy on its own though
@Misanthropic Soldier do dwarfs have plenty of laws man. You can't have a knife that's more than two blades on or that's spirals around because A. is considered torture B. because the surgeon we'll have a super hard time saving a person's life.
Nuclear weapons are against rules of War for obvious reasons.
Chemical weapons are against the war.
Biological weapons are against rules of War.
Killing uniform soldiers that surrender is against the rules of War.
Purposely targeting civilians is against the rules of War.
Torturing enemies against the rules of War.
Yeah dude shoes rules in war man that's been around since the Middle Ages.

This is literally "Good soldiers follow orders." In a nutshell but they Aren't clone troopers.
I mean that's called the 'Nuremburg Defense' for a reason
the case of the first incident doesn't even remotely fit this bill, they were captured, and he was ordered to escort them, and proceeded to murder them in cold blood, the second one is basically exactly what Paton said to do on the other hand
