  • PLEASE READ BEFORE COMMENTING - This was a short film created by students at the University of Southern California. With what limited time, resources, and knowledge they had to create this short, it should not be taken as an exact representation of how a death notification happens. It was a project where multiple short films were presented at the university and this was one of them. For those of you who have either served or have knowledge of proper death notification procedures - please understand they had to work with what they had. It wasn't a group of military veterans who knew the exact Marine uniform regulations, it was also shot on a zero dollar budget and done in a very short amount of time. Thank you for your understanding.

The worst part, is closing their bank acount, their mailbox, their netflix services, their xbox live, their phone, their everything. Knowing they left too soon, just a kid at heart. We all die, but noone should bury their son or daughter.

Actually MJ S, the worst part is being with the Inspector-Instructor Staff Marines who have to make the notifications. I am a Marine Veteran and was a local law enforcement officer. I accompanied them to the residence at 0300 hours so they could notify the family. Because I knew the family, I got the duty of knocking and letting the Mother know there was someone there to see her, while stepping out of the way so she could see the Marines. When she saw them, she screamed and collapsed into my arms and we both wept. By far, the toughest call I have had in my career.

Back in 2006 my oldest son was on his second deployment to Iraq when the doorbell rang. I could see thru the side glass 2 Marines wearing alphas. My heart sank and, as I opened the door, I saw a PFC and Pvt. There were friends of my youngest who came to see him. I ripped them a good ass chewing and then i apologized and explained why. They apologized profusely. My son served 3 combat tours and my youngest 2 and both came home thank God.

I think this video clip does a disservice to those tasked with making these notifications. They don't drop the news and leave to go on to the next one. They take time to attend to the family and assist them with the shock and sorrow that such a notification brings. This video disrespects the military in that it shows it to be uncaring and cold to our Gold Star families. Could not be further from the truth. I challenge you to find a veteran who would not go out of their way to honor and assist a gold star mother or wife, and not just walk away. The Casualty Assistance Officers (CAO) are professionals who realize that someone could be making the same notification to their own family and would not leave as the Captain did in this film.

They know at the knock on the door. Ma'am, we need you to sit down.... She won't... She wants to know. Ma'am your son went down in an Helicopter over Okinawa. He was killed in the crash... or in a battle in some far off place... or hit by a DUI just off base. ...then let them cry for a while... Ma'am, Is there someone we can call for you? A husband, father... friends... They just cry. Then questions come, but the first notification is not just let them know. It's hard to watch mom cry. Watching a dad cry is harder. .... There's going to be an investigation, you'll me back later that day or tomorrow with more information. Then, you come back with more information about the transportation of the remains, and anyone that they'd like to accompany the remains from the unit... Usually, that person is already on the way with the remains. The Marine Corps has been doing this for decades - during peacetime and war. ...The next day you help out with the funeral as they need. Deliver the first check - the death gratuity - and get paperwork started for the other money that will come. The first couple lost their only son. The second lost her husband of 1 month... She just broke down and started balling before she opened the door. After several minutes, she let us in and she called her mom... The third family lost their first generation Laotian son... The fourth.... It is a hard job, and Marines - any military - assigned to do it would rather be shot at.... depending on the temperament of the family, you might be. Take a chaplain if you know what religion, and a medical corpsman along if available... the family might need one or the other.

Interestingly enough, the older man served in the USN, but not the USMC. It was for a project where a bunch of short films were made by USC film students, and was more of a showcase of cinematography in lieu of trying to make their uniforms and everything realistic; again, working with what they had.

I remember playing in the back yard my brother and I being called into the house, I remember walking through the house into the living room and seeing my dad, mom and sister in tears and groaning in pain. The two navy officers with the hats at their sides. My dad looks at me and says “ your older brother beau has been killed. The room went black and I fell to the floor in shock. As we all sat in the living room as a family calling our other family members to notify them of our loss. I will never forget the screams of my sisters and the yelling from my brothers. Truly a day that I will never be able to forget. But I am thankful for the sacrifices of the men and women who have made the ultimate sacrifice.

They don’t leave quickly, it’s a lot more than this. A few days later you will be met by a casualty affairs officer who will start and go over all the red tape to receive death benefits and DIC/SBP pay. You’ll receive death benefits pay fairly fast, as for DIC/SBP pay will take at least 9 to 12 months if not longer. It’s a damn nightmare.
I was out to sea in the Navy and my husband was in Iraq in the Army. The Army screwed up and didn’t notify me until 21 days after my husband was KIA. My husband didn’t have any next of kin except for me. The Army buried him in Dover DE. When I was notified, I could of gone stateside, by why go, he was already buried so I didn’t see the point. I chose to stay in the fight, and with my shipmates. Best way to honor my husband was to keep serving my country. I know he would of done the same for me. I can’t believe it’s been a little over 18 years.

I was a Navy Corpsman and had this duty at Marine Corps Air Station Yuma and was called upon twice to make notifications. On the first, we found that the family had moved out of state already. My brother called me to say he will be landing soon and to not say anything to anyone. He told me he would go to my mothers first and to go visit her. He then showed up with his 2 friends all in dress.
He stayed in the car and his friends came to the door first.
She saw them walk by the window and was confused and went tl the door.
When she opened and they asked her who she was...
She went absolutely hysterical... before they could finish it was actually fucking awful.
My brother then popped out with open arms and she ran to him... She was swearing at him. Slapped him a few times and embraced him.
Needless to say... i guess they thought it would be funny... but jesus christ that was dark.

Telling families about death for their husband's sons brothers nephews is hard. I lost my uncle in 1965 India 🇮🇳 Pakistan War. He was just 24. Fan of Elvis Presley. But that time US was an ally of that miserable country Pakistan.
In War brave young men die violently not peacefully. Yes Brave handsome young men die 😢 in War some survive some dont. Those who survive are the lucky one's.
Let us never forget the men who fought n died in WWII Korea Nam Iraq n Afghanistan. Greetings from India 🇮🇳 to US Marines n Army. Our soldiers in Indian Army fight for the same cause as your men do liberty freedom peace n justice.

julia moore practically lived in wash dc after the battle of the ia drang in 1964 . she lobbied for a formal notification system of fallen soldiers. in case you are wondering lt c hal moore fought the battle of ia drang (we were soldiers). notifications came by way of whoever had a running car such as delievery drivers and taxis...even pizza drivers were used when the war turned bad! sad!
she lobbied for the remainder of her life! she did not recieve a notification but helped delievered many by hand!
in this case a civil social worker should have been brought for emotional statbilizing... this notification is the most stressing a human being can go through. the worst part he was scheduled to come home meaning "he was short"!
congrads to the acting it was spectacular and nothing less!

This is really emotional but it’s not realistic at all. They are their for the family and they take their job very seriously they don’t just drop a bomb and leave them. I know this was a short made by college students and they did the best with what they have. But as badass as the United States Marine Corps is they are humans too. I just don’t want anyone to get the wrong impression. Entertaining yes. But in real life they may stay with that family for hours and hours. And they ask permission to leave stuff like that. And those guys take they job very very seriously. But like I said I know this is for entertainment purposes as the guy states in the description.

I once wrote a screenplay where a cop goes to perform a death notification at a series of homes, late at night, saying that their loved one had died in a motor vehicle accident, and it appears they were intoxicated, and that maybe a good funeral home could fix him up for a viewing etc. In reality, they had all been arrested for drunk driving and were sitting in the drunk tank where inexplicably the jail phone was out of order. They all get taxis home in the morning, and as you can imagine, hilarity ensues when they get home (one of the spouses is caught celebrating with their lover, one has killed herself). Anyway, for research I bought a couple textbooks on death notification.
