I used to have the non-D version, it was a very good lens, just slow focus. Then I bought the 70-210 f/4, again with slow focus. I opted to go for the 80-200 2.8 AF-D, which has much faster focus as well as the wider aperture. I'd like a lighter weight option sometimes, so I've been considering picking one of these up. This video helps confirm that might be a decent option. Thanks for the video!
Thanks for the comment - they are a good choice the only downside to the more expensive 'fast' lenses is that they are not so good in low light . So instead of F2.8 you get F4 but but certainly usable in better light and with the flash and less weight than the big lenses
I completely forgot that I own this lens. Used it in the '90s, attached to a film body. Havent touched it since before I got my first DSLR in the mid 2000s. I sold my 70-200 f2.8 VR a couple yrs ago and havent yet replaced it. Got the wild idea to dig this old girl out, put it on the D500 just to see how it looks and was surprised to see the pics were just as sharp as my more modern, faster lenses. The film body, sadly, will probably never go back into service.
Mine is not the D version and the autofocus is slow as molasses, with a vintage motor sound, but for bright daylight situations where fast AF isnt essential, I'm gonna rock this thing
You are right these lenses are excellent (D or not D) Its bigger MUCH more expensive successor gets all the lime light and people crave after but these are really great lenses with flash or in good light....
This lens is perhaps one of the best zoom lenses that Nikon has made. The speed of the lens is somewhat irrelevant with the dynamic range and high ISO speeds of today. I got one for under $50 US and the image quality blew me away. I shoot for fun and therefore I can't justify any fast lenses. This lens has become my favorite tele zoom. Quality build inside and out.
Yeah you are right it really is a stunning lens and often overlooked for the big fast expensive lenses. I have used it a lot for weddings and it always performed flawlessly.
Love the push pull lenses have the non d version for ages lovely lens and I've just purchased a d version. Nice format and very well built for the money
Hey i'm new to cameras and was wondering if a a Quantaray AF 70-210mm f4-5.6 will fit my Nikon D3300? Since it's a slr lens i believe. I've heard any AF lens will fit a Nikon. I'm buying it off of somebody on offerup and it says for Nikon AF.. Just not sure if it'd fit a DSLR.
The Nikon D3300 does not have a focus motor and the Quantaray AF 70-210mm f4-5.6 also does not have a focus motor so the lens won't auto focus on your camera. You would have to manually focus . I think you would be better keeping an eye on ebay for a Nikon or Tamron lens. You can get them pretty cheap sometimes
Got this lens couple weeks ago and I love it John. On the F5 it's extremely fast and very sharp. A hidden gem for next to nothing. Thanks my friend. :)
BigBadWolfe None Thanks for the comments and you are right it is a hidden gem. Used mine loads at weddings and its always reliable and produces nice sharp photos
donkase Una duda, resulta que tengo el 70-210 desde hace unos dias junto con mi 3300, soy muy nuevo en la fotografia y no consigo hacer autofocus, tiene algo que ver la camara? o es problema de el objetivo?
Hello this lens will work on the Nikon D3500 but this lens wont auto focus on that camera as the camera does not have a focus motor. The price of $133 seems quite reasonable as these lenses still fetch a good price
@@srinivaasansundar7406 The P and S are for the lens motors - P for pulse and S for silent wave motor but I would think these would also share info with the cameras as they are newer lenses. Don't forget the Lens I reviewed above was an older lens
Hola colega John Young. Chau John Young.
The Nikon 70-210 F4 main difference apart from the close focusing is the constant F4 aperture right through the zoom range. With the 70-210 F4 -5.6 the aperture closes down as you zoom so less light into the lens but the 70-201 F4 will stay open at F4 and let more light in right through the zoom range. Its an older lens but you may find one on somewhere like ebay
Yes the Nikon 70-210mm f4 is a great lens by all accounts but I have not personally tried one. I understand they weren't made for long either so maybe harder to get a hold of

@@CarolinaBoi864 Your welcome and well done finding one. They really are excellent lenses

Yes they are a great lens and one often overlooked by many going for the expensive fast lenses
just bought one today :) cheers for a good review
You are very welcome 👍 You'll love it 😀
hello do you know the Non D version has autofocus? Thank you!
The D helps with the metering of the lens not the focus
@@JohnYoungPhotographer thank you!!
@mike zaimis Your welcome
Best lens for carry around especially if you are in a dodgy area.
just bought it , cant wait for it to get to me, thanks a lot !
You wont be disappointed - Great lens especially for the price

nice video! i have the same lens but on a d3300, im saving for a d7200 for the focusing motor, greetings from argentina!
Greetings to you to ... Yeah the D3300 is a very good camera but the D7200 is a step up the ladder you will enjoy using it
donkase Una duda, resulta que tengo el 70-210 desde hace unos dias junto con mi 3300, soy muy nuevo en la fotografia y no consigo hacer autofocus, tiene algo que ver la camara? o es problema de el objetivo?
The Nikon D3300 has no focus motor so wont be able to focus a lens with no motor of its own like the Nikon 70-210
and how do we tell the D version since you didn't show the lens close-up?
Hello, Yes I don't show on video but if you look at the lens there will be a small D under the 70-210mm text and next to the 1.4 - 5.6
I can't find any info. Is this compatible with the Nikon D3500? Also, is $133 CDN a good price? Still a newbie in the DSLR world.

hi what do you mean by non-d version prior d version lens or AF-S?
The D in the description refers to the Distance information that the lens shares with the camera and can affect the metering and the flash exposure
@@JohnYoungPhotographer oh I didnt know that , i believe AF-S and AF-P should be doing the same dont they share it with cam?

@@JohnYoungPhotographer hmm yes you are right make sense, i too have a 1.8d which is faster than my 2.8 af-s
Does it work in a FX camera at the same focal distance? 70-210??
Yes if it was on a DX camera you would have to take the crop factor into account but not on a FX full frame camera

Can it be used on a DX?
You will be able to use it but you will get a 1.5x crop factor.
I bought one in nearly perfect condition for 33$ lol
Yeah they are a real bargain and often overlooked by people only seeing the latest and 'greatest' lenses. Well done and enjoy you will love it
The f4 version without a variable aperture is much better value...
