  • Action from the 1998 and 1999 World and British Rally Championships in this SEAT promotional video. The footages focuses on the Spanish manufacturer's successes in Formula Two with its Ibiza kit car, and also highlights the impending arrival of the Cordoba WRC.
Converted from an internal VHS cassette, almost certainly produced for dealer distribution and looped playback. For VHS Rallies' exclusive range of classic rallying t-shirts, hoodies and mugs, visit vhsrallies.teem...

I hate how low the budget was for the Cordoba WRC. People tend to forget about this but SEAT Sport built maybe the best kitcar when it came to dirt, mud and snow. The Ibiza Kitcar had a ton of class wins in the rougher surfaces, way more than the French brands and Skoda. The transition to WRC should've worked out... but they lacked the budget.

Seat is the most successful manufacturer in WRC Kit Car Cup. They won it 3 times in a row with Ibiza. Now u enlightened us why they never won anything in the main class. Wich is a huge shame, cuz Seat definitely had the potential.

I wonder if VW Group actually poured more money to SEAT's rally programme, what could've been.

They didn't pour much money into SEAT Sport's WTCC program and they eventually dominated it all. Also, the entire TCR class is based after SEAT Sport's León Supercopa car.
Originally, TCR was meant to be a way to have "supermeetings" where several single-brand cups would bring their top performers (some sort of "Race of Champions" for single-brand touring car cups) and race in equal conditions but promoters quickly saw the potential and ditched that concept. You can still see how it was all based in the SEAT León Supercopa by seeing the entry lists of the first 2 seasons. While most cars are called "Brand+Model+TCR", the SEATs are called SEAT León Supercopa.
PS: The main partner to SEAT Sport for the original TCR concept was Peugeot Sport, hence why the earlier Peugeot TCR car was called "Peugeot 308 Racing Cup".
